To be clear... he stole parts of these artists' work to TRY to get a job at Blur. His submissions were so obviously referenced from Feng's work that his application was never considered for anything more an amusing joke. Actually, The stuff on the site doesn't include a lot of the pieces which were submitted. The portfolio that he emailed to us ripped Feng's work almost exclusively. It was kind of fun to go to Feng's site and identify individual pieces that were stolen and used as something else in Sam's work. For instance, he dissected the first two robots in the props/vehicles section and reassembled them to form an entire line of futuristic guns! I can only imagine that his thinking was that since Feng no longer works at Blur, his ability to create new collage-like concepts using pieces of Feng's drawings would make him the next best thing...

someone should chop off they're hands. Seriously, that fact that anyone can try and take anyones thoughts, creativity and talent to produce good work and try and pass it off as their own is the lowest of low.

i dont understand that....
i mean, imagine you stole art from somewhere and you get the job...what would you do then? you cant do art yourself because youve stolen all the time. now imagine you go in to work and they want you to draw something...
your fucked at that moment. your sitting there grasping for an internet connection because you cant do nothing...because your a fraud.
you have to be very stupid to even try something like that.

I am very sorry to have caused this problem. I have just finished University and have been inspired by Fengs and Dougs work. I have used and borrowed ideas but it was only to try and learn the techniques and skills. I have not used any of this work for financial gain and would like to appologise to everyone. I was just trying to teach myself about this industry. I will remove all this work as i understand what i have done. It is a learning curve for me and i hope this just explains a little more.

I fear it is just way too easy to do this and that there are way too many people hiring that do not know Feng's art for instance or -- worse -- that don;t care to look it up...
My guess is that there are many freeloaders like this...

Here's my accounting of the situation. Sam Brade sent his submission to the webmaster at blur, and these were forwarded to me. Imagine the general reaction! I wrote a businesslike note back, advising Tom not to show these pieces professionally and to avoid closely copying the works of others, particularly such well-known artists. I encouraged him to draw original work, and that I looked forward to seeing that work. I got no reply from Sam. Weeks later, in the midst of some back-and-forth banter, I sent the web link (not the letter) to Feng- I figured he'd want to see it and would get a kick out it. He's been copied by zillions, right down to the layout of his site, and he doesn't let it get him down. That's the thing about Feng- this kind of crap rolls right off him! He did take offense at Doug Chiang being ripped and sent the link to Jason, and here we are.
While we'd all like to think that this kind of foolishness always destroys itself, Redmond reminds us that plaguarism can insinuate itself into the fabric of this business. Ask anybody in Hollywood! The thing to remember is maintain your own scruples and be professional. We've got to defend ourselves, but let's not get carried away with sensational rhetoric- please! :)

Sad indeed. But he does have something original going with the "Ammo" text on the crate. That's clever. Hahaha.
The same thing happened to Brian Taylor and his Rust Boy character:

i have spoken at length with dan marionette about this. he had no knowledge of sam brades choices and thus i have removed his site info from the thread. sam took advantage of his goodwill.
dan has a long career ahead of him with potential for great success. sam on the other hand is finished with this kind of behavior.

Hello, I'm the 3dartist from Marionette Studios. I finished university about 3 months ago. I met Sam Brade at uni during a group project, when we finished i thought as a favour because we were both looking for work that I could host some of his work on my site. Marionette Studios isn't a company, it is mearly a name form my portfolio.
Let me tell you that I am just as disapointed and upset as you guys are to find out Sam has copied other artists work.
Let me asure you Sam is not part of Marionette Studios any longer.
I'm sorry for any troble this may have caused to the artists involved and the rest of the community.
best wishes,
Dan Woolley

The really sad thing is that this guy isn't really a bad artist. Like in the below image, he took the Terryl sketch and turned in into a pretty decent drawing. It's still obviously stolen, but my point is that he shows an artistic ability. I guess he was just too lazy to do his own stuff or he can't think of concepts on his own. And if he can't think of anything on his own, how in the hell did he think he could function in an art job?

I agree helix.. imagine all the trouble he would have saved if he had stated his references, and intentions.. and then backed up the "collage" work with stuff purely of his own..
the star wars chars are so identifiable (sp?) that it almost seems he was trying to show that he could handle the style..say as a background artist.. but without a admitance of referance its impossible to tell..

To Dan from MarionetteStudios,
How unfortunate, you got dragged into this mess. (You must have been livid)
You are good to confront the angry people of C.A. And you have apologised.
So, I too apologise for posting very nasty comments about yourself and 'your aquaintance' Sam. The situation is clear to me now, and I hope as well for the other people posting on this thread.
It is hard though, to keep a level head when you hear about stolen work. We all love what we do, and the idea is just incomprehensible.
Dan, I wish you well with whatever you do, and wherever you go. You deserve it.
- Sam I wish you'd get a kicking. You deserve it.
