Hey everyone,

My name's Dan. Just graduated High School a couple of weeks back, so now I just want to spend my time improving my drawing skills before I head to Uni. My bro told me about CA awhile back, and it seems like a great place to learn some new stuff.

Comments and crits are very welcomed.

I'll be posting up some things soon.

Hi Dan, welcome to CA, looking forward seeing some more stuff. :yayca:

Thanks zelda_geek

Might as well start posting up some recent artwork I did. I primarily use my Wacom tablet and Photoshop. Here are some of the last art pieces I made in my IB art class.

Right now, I've been trying to get back to the basics, so I've been sketching some some images I've been finding online. I find that that the face is really hard to get for me so I ended up giving up on finishing the boxer guy. I thought the ballerinas came out pretty nicely, though I tried shading one but got bored half way.

My scanner doesn't work with my Mac, so I had to the take a photo of the doodle of the little witch girl, so the quality is bad.

The hand was drawn from observing my own hand.

I'm not sure where to head to next besides sketching from images and life... any advice would be appreciated.

Sylvain-Klein: Thanks. I had trouble shading it in the beginning, but I guess it came out alright.

Tried my hand at a DSG (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=129017).

Thought it turned out okay, but it's a tad simple, even though it took me around 2 hours to come up with it... Good practice, though. I haven't drawn anything robotic for a while, haha.

Here are my concept sketches:

Cool stuff, your off to a great start. Can't wait to see more. :]

DaShaMa

Té-Can: Thanks, I'll try to keep posting, haha.

I've never tried sketching everyday. Usually, I go through a period where I rarely draw, followed by an art piece, then another drawing drought. So it was kinda hard coming up with some to draw. I feel I have a lot to work on, so I'm unsure what to focus on first.

Anyways, early afternoon, I tried drawing poses from my head:
396442396443396444

In the second set of poses, I looked at a couple reference pics, but I pretty much messed up the action type pose. All my poses seem kinda bland to me, and I'm not sure how to work on that. Probably sketch people in real life would help.

Throughout the rest of afternoon, I tried recreating a character I created during my second year of IB Art, just a couple of months ago. Here are some of the old sketches of him:
396447
(I find it difficult to keep a consistent look for a character, especially when trying to make expressions. Any advice?)

Tried to do a more realistic approach to making him:
396439
Turned out alright, though I didn't really finish it. I used a couple of references to flesh out some parts of the face, though I know I messed up a couple of parts. Guess I need to study anatomy of the face better, plus work on my tones. Gotta add some darker areas, I think.

I started working on the anatomy of the arm since I always try to guess how it looks. I used the references found in Drawing the Head & Figure by Jack Hamm. It's an alright book as it has helped me quite a bit.

396434396438

In the second arm, I tried being a little looser, since the first arm took me a while to make. I'm also trying to identify each muscle, hence the numbers (Bad handwriting I know. I can never seem to write with my tablet, haha)

Anyways, I think I'll be focusing on anatomy throughout this week. I have had Andrew Loomis' books sitting in my harddrive for a while, though I haven't really worked through it since I had school going on. Now seems like a good opportunity now, haha. Plus, while digging around CA, I found this site (Forgot where I found it though...): Pose Maniacs (http://www.posemaniacs.com/blog/) which seems like a great place to sketch warm up poses. I hope by the end of the week, I could use everything I'll learn and make something more complete.

I wished I had more recent finished works to show, so I guess I'll just post up an oldie from my first year of IB Art.

Pretty good start. Be more carefull with your proportions. Always doublecheck if things are making sense. Like in those last loomis arm studies for example the proportions are off. You don't have to get it right the first time but you have to be able to see and correct your errors. Just keep practicing and it will be alright. I'm looking forward for more!

DaShaMa

fantasyartist: Nice, a critique! Yeah, I tend to start adding details before making sure everything's in proportion so by the time I realize something's off, I'm too far in to make drastic changes. Thanks, I'll keep in mind.

Couldn't post yesterday since my internet was slow, though there wasn't really anything too interesting to post.

Anyways, I did the following yesterday:

I tried out the 30 second per pose exercise found here (http://www.posemaniacs.com/pose/thirtysecond.html) for a while. I used my tablet in the beginning, though I found I just couldn't finish a pose because my tablet isn't responsive enough to follow my strokes (Though I've seen some of the artists on that page that use a tablet. I think I just lack control, haha). Here are some results of that:
397988397991

I decided to use the ol' pencil and paper, which helped quite a bit. (Had to use camera, since scanner isn't working)
398004398006398011

Some sketches of my hand:
398023398027

And some doodles to get used to using the pencil again (I even tried changing the way I hold a pencil):
398028

I decided to stick with the pencil when it comes to sketches and save the painting for my tablet. I can draw faster with a pencil and get more ideas down.

Stuff from today:

Again, nothing too interesting. I drew some ears and noses from Drawing the Head & Figure by Jack Hamm to work on some shading (and figured out an easier way to photograph my sketches):
398035398036

And drew and shaded in my hand along with a couple of mouths from magazines (I should try a different hand position and that thing in the bottom right corner is just the shadow from my knee, haha):
398039

Some doodles:
398043

Hmm, I'm not the doodler I used to be. I would draw all over pages before, but now I feel like I can't get my ideas down on paper (though I kinda like the pose on the far left. I might developed that...). I guess more sketching would help...

I also recently acquired a digital copy of Constructive Anatomy by George Bridgman and so I was wondering whether I should start with that or the Loomis books. Any ideas?

You've got some nice stuff here, especially the digitally painted ones, faces are also nice.

I agree with the comments on your anatomy, and as for Bridgman or Loomis, I'd definitely read Loomis first as well as draw, but I guess it's really up to you what you want to get out of the books. Loomis's books provide a real solid foundation and has relaly good advice in the text. Not too sure about Brigman though.

I think if you could push the lines/values contrast in your pencil drawing,s they'd be livelier

There are some issues with the hands (placement of knuckles, foreshortening, thumb bending in an awkward way (second line drawing of hand)

Keep on pushing those anatomy studies

Man... I wanted to post up something at least every week, but since I was out traveling most of the time, I didn't have Internet to post something. That doesn't mean I haven't been sketching, haha. Kept a sketchbook with me most of time, working of diagrams from books and stuff. Now that I'm back in front of my computer, I decided to work on a new digital painting, using a sketch I liked.

431342

So far I like how this is turning out. There are a some issues I need to fix, such as the arm, but anatomy-wise, this is an improvement over my previous drawings. I still have problems with the limbs, especially the arm. There's so much going that I can't wrap my head around. Guess I need to make more studies, haha.

Anyways, I can't wait to add color and hopefully, I have some momentum to post some worthwhile stuff here.

That's really nice. I can see some anime influence in your drawings which makes it a lot more fun to look at for me. The portrait of the girl above the ballerina is my favourite by far. You made some nice studies. And by the way congrats on graduating~! :D

DaShaMa
August 10th, 2008, 03:22 PM
Lostlimeturtle: Thanks. I'm definitely influenced by anime since I watch it almost all the time, though I try to stay away from the generic anime style. Haha, graduation seems so long ago. I'm heading for uni in two weeks!

Anyways, nothing big here. Just some progress on the last piece.

434175

Feels like I haven't gotten very far. Reworking the legs and arms really slowed me down and I've been really frustrated by the hand. Well that's what I get for only working with the torso all this time, haha. I guess I just need to fix up the hand and smooth out the shading in some places. Then I can add some color...

I guess I should include the original sketch since I forgot to last time.

I like your stuff man. I am heavly inspired by anime as well but I don't like the generic look most artist would pass off. If you don't mind me asking how did you get the texture in your shading? I have tried a low brush at 50% opacity and It's still kinda dull.

Nice work. i really like how you color these characters in, whatever method you are using it works. On the last one especially, that one looks like some of your better work definately. The only thing i might crit is that the legs look a bit small or out of proportion to her long torso. Other than that it's a great piece. cheers'

I really like the painterly look of your colouring. your studies are looking pretty nice too! ooh, and if you don't already know (though I would think you do) flipping your image while working is really helpful for picking out mistakes

it'd be cool to see some more fleshed out dynamic poses

September 5th, 2008, 12:15 AM
Wow, 3 comments, that's the most I've had now, haha.

Recurssion:Thanks for the comment!
ArtZealot:Thanks. I'm actually using a new method I haven't really used before. Problem is that it's pretty inefficient, and it's taking way too long. Yeah, I agree her legs look a little small, but I sorta like it that way.
gutss:Thanks. I actually flip my images often, but I always see mistakes. Fixing them is the hardest part, haha. I'd like to have more dynamic poses, but I still find it hard to deal with foreshortening and anatomy at the same time.

Alrighty, another update on my digital painting. Painted in the eyes, but I think something's off. I also refined the scarf, hair and face a bit more. Here's a close up.

I feel bad that the last couple of updates has only been this painting. I'm gonna try varying my sketchbook more, haha.

Just doing some random sketches and such. Wish I could update more, but I've been pretty busy with school.

Tried redoing my character in the first post with the red armor. Though I ended up unsure how to draw the armor, haha.

472547

Did a little drawing of some major muscles. Arms are still hard for me to do.

472549

A little practice with a more dynamic pose. Kinda messed up with the legs...

Wow man, love what you have so far. It's good that you're combining studies of figure/anatomy and then applying it to manga style, and not the other way around.

Have you checked out Kevin Chen's figure stuff? This thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=1432&page=2) might give you more insight. Keep pushing it! :yayca:

What's this? An update within 2 days?!

MrHoboX87: Thanks, I'm starting to see the improvement myself, though I'm not quite sure what you meant that I'm holding back my style.

luismb:f Thanks, will do.

I started with a couple of eye sketches, since I realize I've been drawing the same eyes over and over, but should have I sketched some more masculine eyes as well.

506647

I took this a step further and started drawing heads. I can't get a consistent look for my heads though. I should start looking at the construction of the head, like what I've been doing with the rest of the body. Plus, I should practice drawing hair more, haha.

506649

I haven't touched color in a while, so I started with some rough paintings of random colors. Doesn't really help much, but I guess it's a good warm up.

506650

Finally, I just painted a frog for good practice. I used a reference image, but I eyeballed the color (I didn't use the eyedropper tool). It ended up slightly duller than the real image, but I like how it turned out in the end.

506648

Happy Halloween.

Haven't been here in a while.

Honestly, not much to show. I've been sketching a lot, but I feel I've hit a road block. I guess the lack of life drawings is starting to hurt my progress. Anyways, some work from the past couple of weeks.

537361537366
537362537365

The 3rd pic is unfinished, though I don't have any motivation to continue it. Oh, and I just realized that most of my pics are variations of my young witch character, haha. And what's with the new fields for the attachment uploader? It makes a little more tedious to upload pics now...

kidult
December 10th, 2008, 01:41 AM
It is a bit more tedious but its better than having your work leeched by some copartion. Cool drawings, would suggest head studies but you mentioned that before. I know the manga look is frowned upon round here (I love the stuff tho) and you probably heard this before but you should try less manga looking heads. Its so popular these days that it seems to hold back a lot of artists from developing there own style and its making you drawn the same face over with just differant hairstyles and expressions.
Just a minor personal crit....Keep up the good work!

DaShaMa
December 11th, 2008, 02:11 AM
kidult: Ugh, I just realized how painfully obvious that I'm drawing the same old faces again. While I feel like my drawings would always be influenced by manga, it's probably better to start working in some variety in my sketches or I might trap myself into a single style. Thanks for the heads up.

the ANGRY filipino: Haha, I hope so. Thanks for commenting.

I decided to look through Bridgman's Constructive Anatomy to give me a better idea how construct the arms. I glanced at Bridgman's book before, but I found it too wordy and believed the diagrams wouldn't help. Now that I've taken a look at again, it's actually a lot more useful than I initially thought, as it gave me a sense of where the main masses are. Anyways, here are a number of arm studies I made using the diagrams from the book.

585376585375

Besides that, I've been experimenting with the brush setting. I never realized that using a flat brush would be interesting to use. I ended using that brush to make silhouettes of poses, which is a lot easier than fulling drawing them out. Here're just a few poses I painted:

585377

It was at that point I became a little frustrated since I hadn't drawn a full character in a while, so I drew another silhouette of a pose and decided to paint it. It was suppose to be quick sketch, but I ended up taking up around 2 days, haha. Check it out:

585378

I really like how it turned out. Since it it only took about 2 days to make, it's a lot quicker than when I created some of my older paintings. I'm just a little disappointed I couldn't make a decent background, since I painted in the character first. Also, from working on this painting, I noticed a number of weaknesses to work on. My sense of anatomy for the legs, hands and feet aren't that strong, so I'm probably going to make more studies of those. In the end, it's been a while since I had a lot of fun working on a painting, haha.

Hey, thanks for the comments guys.

I've just been working on my technique for shading and blending colors. Usually when I paint, I throw colors around until it looks right, which ends up taking a lot of time. Thus, I'm experimenting with establishing a gradient before I start shading, paying attention to the level of brightness and saturation used. Here are some studies I made.

645264

From there, I tried painting a simple character.

645266
Close Up:
645267

It was supposed to be a simple paint study so I wasn't really focusing on creating a good figure drawing, hence the nonsensical pose and lack of hands and feet. But I like how the shading turned out, especially the face, even though it gave me the most trouble. The hair, however, is a bit lacking since I ended up painting it last (which is strange, since I usually start with the hair, haha). I was already tired of working on the painting, so the hair ended up more of a placeholder than anything else. Still, I'm fairly happy with this pic, considering the short time I spent on it.

This was suppose to be practice for creating line art, since I'm terrible at drawing them, but I ended up painting it in the end. I simply don't have enough patience to ink lines...

648100

I approached creating the original sketch with a more cartoony style than I usually do, but I like how it's turning out. There are still a number of things I want to do before I can call it done, though I think I can finish it up soon.

Man, I haven't been here for ages. I haven't been doing much aside from relaxing and enjoying my summer. Anyways, new paint study. I'm really rusty since I haven't painted anything in a long time.

So yeah, I ended up ignoring the hands and feet, again. I will work on those, haha. And hopefully, I get back on track sketching this time.

Wow, I can't believe it has already been a month since my last update. I've just begun reading up on a number of tutorials, though I don't think I've quite learned anything substantial yet. Anyways, I just started working on a new drawing. This time, however, I'm taking my time finishing it.

Pretty rough start as of now. I rarely draw a figure from behind, so it's taking me a while to figure out the anatomy as well as the clothing. But, so far, I'm liking where this is going.

Jizu: Haha, thanks.
OmertA: Ah, I appreciate the kind words. I'll keep on working.
Camara: Thanks for the advice. I wasn't sure how to approach coloring my rough lines, but now I have an idea on how to go back and recolor it. But for now, I'd like to work on improving my drawings.

For the past few days, I've been basically searching the web for some good reference photos so I could work on my painting techniques, as well as anatomy. Anyways, here's just a small paint study using reference:
756173

This took me longer than I thought it would, about 2 hours. But, I like how it turned out. Perhaps with more practice, I'll become more efficient, haha.

Every time I begin drawing, I do a number of warm-up exercises including drawing those 30 second poses over at Pose Maniacs (http://www.posemaniacs.com/pose/thirtysecond.html). Just for comparison's sake, I'll post a couple of my recent warm-ups here:

I have a bad habit of leaving out the hands, but I think it's an improvement over my figure drawings back on page one, though I still feel I have a long way to go.

Anyways, expect more studies in the future.

good studies , i wold suggest more contrast ... ^^

Giorge: Thanks for the advice. It's a little hard judging how my colors will look since I work solely in digital. On my old Tablet PC (which I use mainly for studies and sketches) the colors look fine, while on my main computer, the colors look washed out. It's something I still have a hard time figuring out. Even so, I know I have to try pushing the contrast in my works.

Managed to make a couple more paint studies for today:

760199

Here I used a reference from a photo of when I visited Oman. Getting the colors right was fairly difficult, especially for the water. I could have added more details to the water, the sky and the piece of land in the foreground, but I'm pretty satisfied with it. Made in a little under 3 hours in SketchBookPro.

760200

Another painting practice for anatomy using a photo reference. I like how this came out, though I messed up the knee and foot a little. About 2 hours in SketchBookPro.

More studies to come soon.

Just here to post up a work-in-progress of a piece I'm working on. So far it's going alright, though I'm having some trouble shading the clothing. And once again I leave the hands and feet for last (a bad habit I know, haha).

Hi man!Nieat stuff here, and KUDOS on the studies. I am thinking on this last piece here that you may well want to put the spectrals of the clothing a little closer together, hue wise. All depends on what kind of fabric this is of course, but as I would think it is not one of those cheap synthetic fabrics, that change colour depending on where you look at it from, I would think toning it down might just work:)

Digital paint study using a photo reference of a clown fish:
910250

It's been a few months since my last post, huh? I've been drawing with paper in pencil in my own sketchbook, but haven't been posting them. It's actually been a while since I've painted digitally, so these two studies were pretty helpful in getting me back in the groove of painting again.

Pierce9: Thanks a lot. Haha, what's wrong with liking a little anime? ;)

Here's a small update. Just a few more paint studies. The first two, I painted with a little help from some references.

That last one may possibly be the first time I've painted scenery straight from my imagination and it was pretty fun working on it. Anyways, that's all for now. Until next time.

It's been a while.

Just a quick post. A practice painting of a female archer character.

Took a little longer than I wanted, but it was a good learning process.

I rarely draw any robots, so just for practice, I decided to sketch a couple.
