I don't think I've ever posted any final (or at least I'm callin it that ) art here, but the speed thread got me messing with Painting robots so... Finished it tonight. I like it Ok, but its kinda spotty/too contrasty.

wow! i really like this one. i dont think its too contrasty...then again, i always have trouble with that, heh. i really like all the textures in it. i must point out though that there is a bad tangent with their knees. other than that it is a very nice illustration. i love all the blades.

Darken you are so right, I can quick fix that tangent. Don't know why I didn't create more overlap???

Blankfrank, wonderful image with tons of texture and a very personal and unique technological take. I'll critique it a little, if you're interested. The contrast isn't a problem, the flatness of the image is a result of the foreground, middleground and background all having a very similer blend of values. If the sky were lighter, and the figures had *more* contrast, the 3 layers would split apart and the image would have more depth. Also, little touches of highlight "doingers" would help as would just a few spots of saturated color.
Here's a very quick paintover, forgive me, just to illustrate the crit:

The last note: I enjoy your backgrounds just as much as the figures and in this case would very much like to see more. If the canvas extended on the left and right, to avoid the tangent of the robot's elbow with the edge, and giving the viewer more of a look at the environment, the picture may be more engrossing.

BlankFrank - I really love your style. It reminds me a lot of James Christensen. I really like it...has a real classical/timeless look to it. I say blend the backgrounds and the foregrounds...if that's what you are going for hehe.

blank: good, i like the way you fixed the tangent. i think wetter has a good point. if you just lighten up one of the elements (like the background) then everything will pop more. its great to see some finished art by the people in the sp gallery.

Thx for the crits and help...now this really is the "finished art" My apologies to Oblio for making changes, I really did think it was done but there were some real good suggestions made and I couldn't resist.
Scott- thanks for the adjust layer lesson and everything else.

Blank...this work is really great. Your style sets you apart. I love your use of texture and your color palette. They really set you apart and I dig it! I've watched you on the speed thread and love your stuff there as well. Great job with the changes to this one as well, I think you've improved upon a piece that was already great, and made it fantastic!!!
Great work!!

I think this piece is awesome, but I still believe that something is off. It looks like the background was painted on top of your characters, there is sort of a whitish outline (very faint) that goes around them. It makes them seem as though they are pasted onto the scenery. Almost like paper cutouts.
Either way its kinda of interesting, but distracts from the depth that the image could have otherwise. Nice style. And I like your choice of colours :)

Thx to all for helping me make this better, not everything is fixed/adjusted etc but at some point I have to cut my losses and move on.
Jezebel- eagle eye...some masking flaws showed up oops, I re-worked many edges, softening in spots and got rid of that annoying "ring around the collar"
Smeagol71,MindCandyMan- Very glad ya like it. No matter what I try and do I can't run away from "myself". I would like it to look like somebody else did it but it ends up being me.
Darken- Tangent cured, and since I don't care that much if the bot would work, that hunk of metal solved the prob.
Scott- In the end I met you half way on the sky. Probably should have added room on the side but...I'm tired. thx again.
If anyone want to see the "real" finish I posted it at my site.
