This isn't ConceptArt.org people only, but it's an event I thought some of you might be interested in. I'm guessing there are plenty of people here from Savannah, what with SCAD being here and all. The first round of Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School in Savannah will be going down on June 29th, if anyone wants to come get their life drawing thing on.
Here's the website:

I saw the poster for Dr. Sketchy in Montgomery hall and was stunned and delighted. I'll definitely be there; it's not like much else happens around here during the summer.

Great! I'm hoping there are enough people here during the summer to support this.

Thanks for the linkage! I'm not in school anymore and couldn't find a damn thing to do about lack of life/model drawing in SAV if you don't have student ID. I think the Telfair does it occationally, but it was uber-expensive.
That's the night before me and the SO head out for vacay but I'm pretty sure we'd be interested nonetheless. :)

That's the thing for me too. I'm pretty much done with school (though I may go back and get a masters at some point), and that tends to leave you with the option of either paying for extremely overpriced classes, hiring a model for yourself (even more expensive), or trying to make do from Flikr. Not the best selection of options.

I'm kind of surprised that SCAD kids never started a sketchgroup on here. I'm sure there's plenty of us lurking around the boards; I certainly know a few kids in class who poke in here now and again.

Bah, my train ticket out of town is for 6:30AM the day after but me and the man will be going anyway and dragging some friends as well.
Mae: Any idea how late this thing will run?
Senira: None of the kids I knew in my dept had heard of CA (though some profs had). The only SCAD kids I ever see here are freshmen who came to ask questions on the Edu board.
For a while we hosted our own sketch parties weekly on Sundays at our house. I even taught a few "classes" on Photoshop and maquette making. However, we were all working adults with little time so the visitors usually did nothing but socialize--gaming/watch TV/hang out in the library discussing books. *sigh* We figured we needed to move it to a bookstore or cafe to lessen the slacking and allow for anyone to be invited...but that meant only sketching (no room or tech for other types), crowded, and I'm pretty sure those boys could slack off about anywhere. ;)
You want to be part of one, ya gotta start 'em. :)

Mae- not actually in lacoste, but i did just finish up the germany off-campus program. :) (now i'm just wandering around lost in normandie)
a friend of mine mentioned it in the scad lj community here: http://community.livejournal.com/scad_community/740219.html
it looks like its getting a good response. i know i had heard of dr. sketchy's before (one in the ATL, right?), so i was both excited it came to savannah and disappointed i couldn't be there for it. i really hope it continues into the fall, the life drawing sessions on fridays can get kind of dull. :(

June 27th, 2008, 08:46 AM
This is kind of the test run for later sessions and will likely wrap up around 9-9:30, not too late. If people are willing or wanting to hang out longer, the next one may run a bit later.
I really hope this goes into the fall. I'm pretty sure it will go on, though if things are slow we may do it bi-monthly instead of every month.
And yes, there is one in Atlanta. I'm hoping to bribe a fetish model that does some work for them to come model for us in the fall.
On a side note, thanks a ton for mentioning the LiveJournal thing! I'm not much of a social networking site person and had completely forgotten to make a Dr. Sketchy's thing there.

Should the CA.org folks have their own mini-meet up? It would be nice to find each other at the event, since I'm sure there will be a few folks there.
I'll be the girl in the blue Chesire cat shirt.

Thanks for getting it together Mae! I brought 5 people with me and they all really enjoyed it. We had great fun and hope to do it again soon (I'll probably get more friends to go now that we've done it once and can vouch for it). I'll probably upload some of the less scary drawings when I get back from vacay.
As I suspected, we were the only people from CA. Though I didn't hit up the forum before I went, I figured out who you gals were. It was nice to meet you Senira--why'd you guys cut out on the last pose? You missed another rockin' costume! :P (I was the one with the rather long hair...and charcol.)
Some suggestions? We'd love to have better lighting (both on the model and for us). Someone commented that we'd probably have more room in the space if there were no tables. I have much hate for the poles...but not too much to do about that... ;) Oh! And the model was fantastic. She was gorgeous with great costumes, but as awesome as they were we would have liked to just draw one a session so we could get more views of them.
Thanks again. :)

I had a project due the next day that I'd kinda sorta forgotten about until my friend happened to ask me what classes I had this quarter. I decided to leave early to work on it. Also, I figured Bay St. at night + large, burly drunk men + two puny girls - the majority population of downtown (SCAD students)= much higher chance of ending up on the morning news.
It was great fun, Mae. Definitely worth the 7 bucks. My friend was a bit surprised when the model rolled out in the leather outfit; I forgot to tell her about the whole burlesque aspect of Dr. Sketchy's. Still, she enjoyed it.
I apologize now for everything I drew being made of suck and fail. That's what I get for only doing one life drawing session last quarter. Granted, I was finishing my senior final, but still-- no excuses!

Thank you guys for coming! I'm glad you enjoyed it. We actually had it set up for some brighter directional light on the model, but when we actually got ready to start I forgot to turn them on. Next time I think we may limit it to about three tables, a bunch more chairs, and some barstools in the back so more people can see. We're also going to attempt to build a little stage that we can setup in that corner to help with visibility.
Hehe, Senira, if you worry about your sketches you should see mine. It has been quite a while since I drew from a model and you can definitely tell.

No need to be SCAD affiliated. Saturday morning (around 10 unless there are any serious objections to the time), Fort Pulaski.

On behalf of the CATL atlanta group i just wanted to say...
GO savannah GO!
So maybe we could figure something out sometime ... maybe a few of us atliens could make a road trip to savannah. it's so scenic there ... great for sketching, esp. if there are other ca folks to meet and sketch with and show us around the good haunts. There are some Scad folks in our group up here, it's really a great resource to have in the same town. Anyways, if any of you guys come up to the ATL definitely shoot me a PM and we'll figure something out. The impenetrable artist squad up here is all about meeting new artists and comparing notes on art, CA, and other assorted delicious ephemera. :D
Also it does need to be noted: "Mae Hafta Hurcha" is definitely one of my favorite usernames i've seen on ca or anywhere else ... up there with the likes of "Tom Waits for No Man." hehe...
cheers and jeers.

There are surprisingly few peeps from CA that are in the SAV area. You'd think having a large base of young artists in town would make CA well known.

I'm definitely interested in Dr. Sketchy's in Savannah. I'm 21 and heading to SCAD (from Boston, MA) for a VFX Bachelors program. I still love 2D but I'm making my career focus mostly 3D.
Hope to see some of you soon :)

Aww, don't be too hard on yourself. It's great! Besides, there's enough interest I'm sure you'd have artists flocking to you to contribute if you give 'em the option. ;)
Just got back from taking the beau to the hair salon. Told the young, new-in-town stylist about the upcoming session and she's stoked. Got my sister to come...Should be a packed house. :D

I'll be in Savannah soon. I'm leaving Massachusetts around Sept. 8th or 9th and will probably get there the 10th. However, SCAD won't let me move into the dorms until the 12th. So I'll probably end up wandering/driving around Savannah and sleeping in my car or if I can find a really cheap hotel stay there for a night or two.
I'm definitely down for the Dr. Sketchy's on the 22nd.
Any suggestions or tips you Savvys can offer me on the way there or once I get there? I'd appreciate it :D

August 15th, 2008, 08:26 AM
Uhh...I wouldn't sleep in your car. That's not really safe anywhere, or comfortable...or something the cops will let you get away with in SAV proper. ;P
Hotels are relatively cheap in the Southside (Business District) of SAV. Probably even more so out where I-95 and 204 (Abercorn--the main thoroughfare in SAV) meet. I'm curious why you'd leave so early if you had no where to stay when you got here. :/

Welp, since Mae hasn't been around this thread lately, I thought I'd mention that Dr. Sketchy's November Edition (http://www.drsketchysavannah.com/) is happening this Sun the 9th (tomorrow, or...later tonight as you please). Last month we got to draw on PUMPKINS, this time the theme looks like 80's Glitter Glam...yessssss.
(It also looks like the new model is another acquaintance of mine, who I have also drawn before....haha.)

Thanks Mirana! I accidentally locked myself out of my account in September because I couldn't remember my password and just now remembered what I was using. I should never, ever delete my cookies.
December's session is coming up in a couple of weeks on Sunday, Dec. 7th. Doors open at 6:30, first pose at 7! We're doing a tiki themed session with Scarlett modeling and performing a little hula for us! Grass skirts optional, but bring your sketchbook! ; )
Also, I just got the date nailed down for January, so you guys get it even before it goes up on any of the official Dr. Sketchy's stuff. January's will be a two model session on the 11th with a mad scientist theme!
In other, somewhat related news, I talked to a few people about doing an overnight lock-in somewhere with multiple models and the aim of filling a sketchbook over the course of the night. I seem to have plenty of interest in this to make it happen, but no place willing to host it. If anyone knows of any non-SCAD facility that we might be able to use, preferably for free, but I can work a reasonable fee into the budget too, I would love to hear about it.

Hi guys, just an update so you can mark your calendars in advance. The next few upcoming sessions will be Feb. 15th (a Victorian Valentine's day theme), March 29th (with ballet dancer model goodness), and April 19th (to be determined, but it looks like a tribute to old school gaming is on it's way).

So, I've been thinking about and checking into the logistics of doing an all night sketch session with a bunch of models. The idea would be something to the effect of fill up a sketch book with life drawings all in one loooong night. I know I've mentioned this to a couple of people here, but I may have found a venue for it, which was the biggest issue, so I'm wanting some more feedback on the idea now. I've also got a slew of models wanting to come model for us now, from muscle men to ballerinas, so we can get plenty of variety through the evening.
Would you be interested in something along those lines? Is there a time that would be best for you (day of the week, general time of the year, something relative to the academic calendar, whatever)? Any questions or comments are welcome. This one will be a bit more of an undertaking to plan, so I'm very, very open to hearing what everyone thinks.

Just a quickie update with some upcoming stuff, Dr. Sketchy's and otherwise that you guys might be interested in.
March 29th, Dr. Sketchy's @ Moon River
Super flexible ballerina coming, will be modeling en point for at least a couple of the short poses.
April 4th, TASTE Art Fest
This is kind of new to me, but there will be an art festival featuring a little bit of everything at M.E.A.T. which is an artist's co-op thing off Louisville Rd. (head west on Liberty out of downtown and it's on the left). Doors will open at 3pm, get there before 7 to avoid a cover charge.
April 19th, Dr. Sketchy's
Lazuli returns! It's an old school gaming theme, so if you've ever had the urge to draw a gorgeous girl with Pac-Man pasties and a Duck Hunt gun, bring your newsprint and charcoal!
