Topic: Deep Sea Technology
1. Sketch, draw, design and doodle anything that comes to mind for the topic DEEP: Undersea Utopia in terms of stuff; Vehicles, breathing gear, submarines, sunken containers etc.
2. This time, focus on generating and presenting your ideas. While one sketch can sometimes be a hit, usually you'll need to work initial ideas out a bit further to come to more finalised concept. For this challenge, both are fine. You will be judged on the whole body of work, not the final render of a concept alone.
3. Go wild...
Rules for the Final Submissions:
1: Bundle all your images into a maximum of 5 images in total and put them in ONE post. It might be advisable to come up with an overall layout for all 5 images to present all your ideas, so it will look more like one coherent entry than just a bunch of gathered sketches in one post.
2: The maximum size of the images can be as big as the CA attachment manager can handle, but avoid sidescrolling as much as possible. This is for your own convience as well as ours :D
3: Use the attachment option to post your work. It would be a shame if in half a year most of the images in here are gone.
4: Post a thumbnail of your best sketch/idea/concept on an outside host so we can put it in the poll. This makes it easier to find your name in the poll and is a good exercise in judging your own work.
5: Post only finished submissions in here. Any post not containing art or offering critique or comments on already posted work before the poll is up will be deleted. The appropriate thread for that is here: IDW - DEEP: Undersea Utopia (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=125645)
Edit: Since a lot of entries did not follow one or more of the guidelines, and each activity had its own version of these, I have not been too strict with following these.
The results of the DEEP contest will both have a public poll and will be judged by a jury (from Massive Black).

Here are some of the ID-type designs I've been sketching for my two different story ideas. The more fantastical ones are for "Gulliver's Travels in Atlantis", the more futuristic ones are for my sci-fi Utopia-in-progress story. I probably won't do more finished renders, because I'm focusing primarily on the POW story and letting the rest grow out of that.

I'm actually not sure how the hydrothermal vent works...the bacteria is glowing along the corridors
but the Nergal emblem is borrowed from ancient Sumeria - it was one of Nergal's signifiers - in case you were wondering "why a lion underwater?"

I know tech is my weakest area, but I couldn't back out. ^_^
clothing and gear
On the Bortians ships, I wanted them to be blocky. Not smooth or fishlike in anyway. Since the Bortians are the ‘evil race’ (they’re the resource consumers) they defy nature every chance they get. I wanted their ships to reflect that. I wanted the shapes to look like they almost wouldn’t work underwater. Their ships should defy nature just as they do.
Dang, I see now I poated way too many images, alright, I'll try and get these compiled into 5 images, sorry guys. Bare with me.

A few industrial designs. I wanted to go with the idea that aliens are actually sea dwelling. To me thats the last thing you expect UFO's to come from anyway. :P

My first entry is an idea for a weapon. I think a main challenge in underwater weaponry is that most of the mechanisms used to fire weapons above ground malfunction or fail to operate while submerged. Harpoons are a popular exception, but I thought that was too unoriginal. This concept is a gun which uses the pressure of the extreme deep sea to propel a ball from the gun. Upon impact the ball opens up, releasing a water-soluble, poisonous chemical which can either kill, stun, or poison an aggressive animal.
Here are silhouettes. I did them in marker after watching a Youtube trailer for Coro's DVD (I recently had to sell my Wacom).

A short diagram showing its use. (1) Aimed and ready. (2) Firing the ball. (3) Ball explodes, releasing poisonous gas and disabling the sea creature.
Giant mech suits capable of withstanding incredible pressure. These are used for both labor and defense. Suitable for one human, the right arm is a powerful pincer, able to move debris, bend metal, or hold onto a sea creature. The left arm is a high-powered chainsaw, able to cut through materials or kill sea animals (preferably after grabbing them with the pincer).
I went for a simpler design. Here are the front and side views.

Here's my contribution to this section of DEEP. This is my first time doing an IDW entry, so I tried to choose everything that would fit into it. Just tell me if I messed up. Some of this also crosses over into other threads because it seemed to fit both.
There is some back-story, but it's not really important. Basically, all of western-europe is submerged due to tectonic shifting, creating a gigantic sea-wall. People managed to build a community there, but thousands of years of completely controlled environments have led to an evolutionary shift in humans.

Imworlds had my favorite individual design. Although robogabo does have my favorite overall DEEP package. Also wanted to mention to Wasker that you had some awesome thumbnail shapes going on, but your linearts seemed to ignore that intensity and potential, which is too bad.

Among those presenting the most elaboration of ideas without violating the final burning rules, Oshiiniku seemed to me to have the cleanest lines and the greatest tendency to stick squarely inside the general boundaries of industrial design.

i liked MickeyMao concept for the railcar.
I thought cheo36 Urchin design
was consistent and easy to remember.
hyptosis did some cool Bortian vehicles and terrisian concepts.
Imworlds Mech design is just awesome,
gotta love that silhouette
and cool limbs , really good stuff.
Vorace presentation is nice very consistent
and that CPU is great.
Sinix signature style and great sense of design
is just hard to miss i like how the design works
in both graphic and rendered versions.
Jonny got solid representation and use of perspective
that empire vehicle and architecture is great!
I liked Jim_Hatama entries they have great atmosphere
and epic proportions very nice renderings.
oh man oishiiniku entries are impressive
he got awesome technique and the thumbnails are sooo stylish
all of those are good
but the helmets are my favorite part, excellent sense of form.
Saturns Gate first concept, i wish i could zoom in,
i like the organic feel this tech has.
Wasker thumbnails are energetic
and also have a very nice organic and aquatic feel to them,
the reactor is really good too.
prepsage made some very stylish and organic designs,
the shoulder piece on the meridia atmo suit
and the helmet on the mid depth suit are my fav :-D
and of course thanks to Yoitisi and Davi for all the work :hugsmile:

I agree the oishiiniku ones were great
I had to go with Hatama though, seems like an underwater city on epic potency. I liked the colors too, and the swirly things on the sub cities.
give me 3 months ill be kicking you 'guys' butts out of IDW...maybe...gotta keep up... :(
This stuff is hard to control....so new respect for what the IDW crew does... :)

I'd call it Robogabo and Oishiiniku in an astounding photo-finish, with Jim Hatama and Wasker close behind. Also liked Prepsage, Jonny, and Imworlds quite a bit.
I think my vote has to go to Robogabo, for showing a more comprehensive package and some awesome color work.

Robogabo's takes of the diver swimming through the city were great(kept me mesmerized for quite a while), but in the end I voted for Sinix, simply because I love the style with which Sinix's piece was done.
But man, theres so much talent on here, its very inspiring.

Trying to give helpful feedback, use or ignore as you wish.
Mickeymao- good diversity of ideas but the writing was sometimes hard to read. (I got a lot of room to talk I know). What I am talking about is not handwriting so much as on that blue paper background the contrast of the writing was hard to deal with.
Naomi Ningishzidda- I wanted to see some English language labeling on the Hydrogen powered thermal vent explaining the parts or something. It's a cool drawing and I could have been drawn into a story about the working parts very easily. the poison pierce was an interesting idea and I liked the thumbs.
J Pearce- I liked the ideas but they are straightaway plan views and I think you could have tossed in some perspective drawings for interest.
Hyptosis- Lots of thumbs. I thought some could have used a little punch to the values. It's a pretty mixed bag but lots were kind of warlike.
Robogabo- Lots of vehicles in perspective, lots of outfits, good work, a few pieces bordered on environments. Frankly this stuff is so good I'm not all that qualified to find any faults.
Dimagyan- It's an interesting direction to go in heavy for robots in the undersea utopia. It sets you apart a little bit. Some of these things looked a little unfinished (which was kind of allowed in the deep competition, I know).
im worlds- It's great. Would have loved to see other designs rather than variations on a single design.
Vorace- details, details ... all the little chains and stuff (++). The colors are kind of cool.
Sinix- The pink against white didn't work for me as it seemed to be harder to read. It was not initially apparent to me whether it walked or swam.
Jonny- Lots of ships and some quite good. Not much other than ships.
Jim_Hatama- The sketchiness (which was somewhat allowed in this competition) probably costs you some votes. It seems no matter what anybody says about getting away from eyecandy, the eyecandy draws the votes, doesn't it?
Eric T- How does it turn?
Oishiiniku- I see some walkers some swimmers, thumbnails and suits. There's really no tendency to fuzz the farther away parts as some others did. Another entry too good for me to pick apart.
Saturn's Gate- I see more idea than render here. It's regrettable but: It seems no matter what anybody says about getting away from eyecandy, the eyecandy draws the votes, doesn't it? Thanks, though for working the brain candy angle of the competition.
Serpian- Impressive bulky suit design showing clear thought process.
Ian Mack- I wished for some shading.
TMG- Another interesting bulk suit. the poison ball thing reminded me of the electric ball guns in the book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
Icy M- the exploration suit final would have been really cool if you could see an entire city up there in the "helmet"
Cyborgluddite- I couldn't really understand what it was
Cup of Joe- Nice attention to edges and values. Some explanation of what the designs do would have been great on some of those things.
Wasker- Lots of thumbs. I never thought I'd see bricks and carpet in what looks kind of like some kind of airlock room.
corspufo- interesting suit idea. not for high pressure but the stylization is cool.
Oregano- A shipwreck is a bold thing to draw when others draw intact ships. (The kodiak was a nice simple utilitarian design for your intact one). I couldn't figure out at first how to cross the bridge, but a little turn into perspective could solve that. I was feeling sorry for the poor yurt bubble people trying to sleep when the wave came around each night.
Prepsage- The arms feel slightly awkward on the atmosphere dive suit. Do human arms go into there or stay in the cab? Or is it for non-human operators?

But there are more great artists with awesome artwork too like imworlds, Vorace, Sinix and oishiiniku. Congrats for you all!
