It looks to me like he is simply using a soft-edged "brush" or "airbrush" with different values of grey.

It is also possible to lighten or darken areas using the "dodge" and "burn" tools

sorry if you're already in the know, but
i use this a lot.

'd' resets your background & foreground to black and white
'[' & ']' to change the brush size
'{' & '}' to change the hardness of the brush.
numeric keys to change the opacity value quickly.

As dcorc mentioned, dodge and burn can also do values.

Useful info, dwardo - thanks.

Using brushes set at low opacity is good, so that they can be used to build gradually - usual painting tricks apply too - start by blocking-in big shapes with large brushes, move to smaller ones later.

I'm only starting myself, so I don't know if it's a good
way to work.

I personally like to block in at 66% opacity.
It kind of restricts me from thinking too much about details
and rather what the intention is. Blocking in.
The other 44% creates happy accidents.

Note:
Personally, I've set the Intuos3 touchstrips left and right to brush size
and hardness. If there's a way to set the touch strip to control opacity value
I'm interested to know.
