Hi everyone,
Well I try to be in my dream career as an Freelance Illustrator and artist for the last three years. I did have some small success's but not enough to make a living out of and support the family and have a life.
So I have taken on a new career in the Australian Mining Industry, I will be working on a drilling rig now, so I will be doing a roster of 18 days on and 9 days off. This will be a real shock to my every day life being away from the family and my personal art projects for such long period of time. But I believe it will make me stronger as an artist and as a person in general. Giving me more of appreciation towards my art, being that I will be only doing some sketching and planning when finished my daily 12 hour shift each day for the 18 days. But I think I will grow form it.
Has any one else had to do a similar thing in their life to make life better but had to sacrifice their art a little.

kickass! 18 days on and 9 off sounds pretty sweet. I do however completely realize how hard the work is that you're going to be doing. I hope you turn out to the the type that is suited to it.

Make some good money, and make some good art on your days off :)

you'll appreciate the art when you get back into again full time but my advise keep sketching and working on stuff while you can to keep your skills sharp. I stopped for awhile after college real life etc got in the way biggest mistake ever made, but things like that make you work your ass off to gain back lost ground .

Woot. Another driller/drill-hand/lesse-hand . What kind of drilling rig are you on? Are you in Exploration Diamond drilling, surface, or underground? or Oil/gas drilling as a leese-hand, Witch is normally where you start. Connors drilling? I have been Drilling / working on the oil rigs since I was 17. I wanted to become an artist but there is no way in hell I will make the kind of money I am making now as I would an artist. Thats not to bad of a hitch Usually I end up pulling 30 days on, a week to two weeks off. Most relationships don't work out on my end. I hope every thing goes well for you and your family. Good luck to you man keep your head up and think smart. Take it slow to start off with and learn what you need to learn watch where you put those damn fingers.

Good deal, just don't forget about your passion. I'm in a similar situation, as I am going active with the US Army for 3 years, and while I'm not busy soldiering, I will be busy improving my skill set to reach my goals.

Project 86 had some lyrics that went something like "In every man's life, he must brandish his steel and mount up his steed, my will be a dead man."

I suppose the most important thing is not to forget what it is you truly want to do with your life and make it happen.
