the poll is up!
Starting May 15th, 2008, and running until 11:59 pm on June 30th, 2008, all the weekly contests will be combined and unified under one topic, "DEEP: Undersea Utopia" and for EOW this means...
Environments of the Undersea Utopia
Civilization, biosphere, dwellings, palaces businesses, agriculture as much of the whole idea as you can possibly imagine.
Please create several views of the SAME world so that you decribe the entire environment that you imagine.
The world is Deep under the sea, so it's up to you to decide; how it got there, how it survives, or even whether the inhabitants are air breathing or not. it is all up to you to show us your vision of the perfect world under the sea.
Instead of the normal one entry per person, this time we want to see a variety of work.
Judging will be based on idea development, presentation, and the over-all body of work (vision). The amount of work invested in each idea or concept is up to you; 5 developed concepts with sketches to back them up, 100 thumbnails categorized on different subjects, go wild. In the end, bundle it into one image/submission and post it in the Final Burning Thread.
The results will be judged by both a public poll and a judging panel, as there are going to be awesome prizes for the winners!
Focus the illustration on the environment, idea development, and it's design. You may include characters, and creatures and Stuff... But they should not be the focus of the design. Both color or B/W entries are accepted.
Max single submitted image size 1200x1024 pixels. Remember that you are to present multiple images to portray this world. I recommend: distant view, medium view and close up details. of several aspects.
New Images only, no old work.
Here's a few notes for you guys:
1. Environments can be whatever you think fits the bill. Natural, Created, Built, it doesn't matter. You're totally open.
2. Submit all your work in one post in the final burning thread. I'm going to put the final burning thread up WELL before the deadline, so you can post in there and edit it when you have new work to add to it. So if you finish a few pieces well before the 6.5 weeks (!!) are up, but then finish some more, you are to submit them all together.
3. This is about ideas, not just pretty renderings! Judging will be based on the body of your work, and the ideas within, and presentation. However, craftsmanship is always important too, so do a nice job!
4. There will be a poll, but final winners will be decided by a judging panel. This is because...:
5. There is the potential for some really awesome prizes. Trust me. Trust me they are awesome. Keep your eye on this space for details. :)
We want to see what you can think of, how much you can think of, and how far you can stretch yourself. Guys, run with this! We all have the potential to pull together some ridiculously awesome stuff. Please take time with your art work, this is a great opportunity to show everyone of what you are capable of and there is plenty of time to do a great job. Put some thought into it!
Good luck!
Deadline: June 30 - 11:59pm

Many of my ideas were inspired from the City of Petra.
If you don't know what Petra is (not the band... the City) check it out, you might enjoy what you see.
The city is basically built out of it's surroundings and holds some biblical significance.
In my case Tall canyons, tight caves and narrow passages seem to frame in the city's linear construction.
The Large bedrock and tectonic structures beneath the sea compliment some of these living spaces as some
of the cities tend to run hundreds of feet within the earthy walls and geological creations; creating wonderfully
insulated and supported quarters.
I wanted to stick with a concept group that would be plausible for the human race to accomplish, thus
bringing the viewer into the body of work as though we could relate to the environment that we strive to survive in.

Here's what I have so far:
http://img27.picoodle.com/img/img27/4/6/22/f_EOWDeep02Tim_8c0cc69.jpg (http://www.picoodle.com/view.php?img=/4/6/22/f_EOWDeep02Tim_8c0cc69.jpg&srv=img27)
The main idea behind this undersea utopia is that it is an alien spacecraft voyaging from far away to study earth life, including humans. There are five of these crafts placed strategically around the world's oceans, each having the capacity to sustain a crew of 30. The space capsule partially anchors itself in the deep ocean floor, mainly to camoflauge itself from humans. They use the spacecraft as a headquarters for it's scientific studies. The craft is self-sustaining, having a reliable food supply growing in the four pod-like structures protruding from the craft's sides. The power supply comes from underwater hydrothermal vents converted into energy. The top part of the craft detaches from the main "body", as an escape vessel.
http://img29.picoodle.com/img/img29/4/6/22/f_EOWDeep01Tim_23d852c.jpg (http://www.picoodle.com/view.php?img=/4/6/22/f_EOWDeep01Tim_23d852c.jpg&srv=img29)This is an interior shot of the alien creatures' sleeping pods.
The aliens enter the pods, then the pods' entrance seals up, and the container is filled with liquid that keeps the creatures in a preserved state until they need to wake up. When the re-animation sequence is initiated, the pod sends an electric surge through the liquid to jumpstart the alien's heart, thus bringing the creature out of it's sleeping state. There are at least three rooms filled with these pods in the spacecraft.

Here are some of the environment sketches I've done for my two different story ideas. Most of these are for "Gulliver's Travels in Atlantis". The supercavitating railcar is for my sci-fi Utopia-in-progress story. I probably won't do finished renders, because I'm focusing primarily on the POW story and letting the rest grow out of that.

DEEP: Undersea Utopia-undertotalitarianism
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jellyfish town
A group of up to 5 towns, each of which houses 2000~3000 people and
connects together by fully closed channels. Only 25% of its capacity are above the
water surface. A pair of pipes at the bottom of a jellyfish town connects with its Gravity town
which sits on the seabed. Through the pipes liquid oxygen flows from Jellyfish town to
Gravity town while energy produced from terrestrial heat moves upward in an
opposite way. Top ranks in the fish-citizens’ society will enjoy their vocation at here.
Energy Collecting Plant
Here is one part of the plant in Gravity town. They mixed up donated human organs from root rank with some ocean creatures so the hybrids can work smart and strong. It is an undersea-totalitarianism era, so called donated human organs actually come from jails somewhere, while the fish-citizens who live in the city know nothing about electrocution or gas chamber, only army and secret police know the path to slum region through the seabed.

2 = An idea for transportation through tunnels using controlled ocean currents.
Which can be used to shorten the journey from and to the city.
3 = "Deep inn", an inn at the outer reaches of town near a swamp.
4 = The lower alleys need all the light they can get. Made to look like what they saw in postcards floating

This underwater utopia is a realm simply known as The Deep. Humans have laid claim to these lands and are able to "breathe" the water of the deep ocean. A very special ore has been discovered that is able to oxygenate water. The water then is able to be inhaled and give humans all the air they'll ever need. Everyone that lives in the Deep works hard and contribute to the well being of their world. Yet all is not work, when their labor is done, they enjoy each others company in lavish parties and wondrous feasts.
Most daily life, and nightly, takes place in the water. But now and then there are grottoes and special area that are on land, or at least dry areas. It is here where some of the luxuries of land are grown, like special trees and vegetation.
Life underwater is pleasant and enjoyable. In this society, danger is not very far off, but safety is insured and harmony thrives.

The final for the main building. It powers the entire city, sucking thermal energy from the nearby mountains (through the long pipes) and spreading it to the other buildings. It also houses the government and other important areas.
http://www.tgarbarini.com/deep/Environment/powercore.jpg
Aside from people and animals, the survivors also brought with them seeds of various plant life and crops. Space is tight though, so they've developed technology to make the best use of the area and plant things on the ceiling as well as the ground. This is illustrated in the top portion of this image. Below that are some exterior building brainstorming, whale bones in the sea bed, and a close-up of the lights used in the green-room.

Didn't put as much effort into this section as I would have hoped, but whatever. Some of this is also posted in other threads because I thought it fit both.
There is some back-story, but it didn't manifest itself much in the designs, so it's not very important. Basically, all of western-europe is submerged due to tectonic shifting, creating a gigantic sea-wall. People managed to build a community there, but thousands of years of completely controlled environments have led to an evolutionary shift in humans.

Too many good ones to choose from, but in the end I have to pick Oregano, for the mosaic but not only that, the architecture and presentation are all spiffy. Some of the more fabulous renders are very impressive but I have to vote based on concept....the mosaic did it, lol :D

It was too close to vote on this one. Really was difficult. :(
In the end I chose Jim Hatama for the epic look to his city. It really has that feel of something amazing and could so imagine it in a game. love the sketchy rendering, though next time I would prefer to see some more loose sketches bundled in to show development.
Close calls were : Oregano, os2008, and flashrabbit.

my vote goes to os2008 for offering the most originality into the world. Seems like something ive never experienced under water but works great.
Jim's piece is technically very well rendered but ive kind of seen the exact same buildings before in space.
and wasker barely didn't get my vote, but it didn't seem as original as os2008's. I can picture most of the environments to be set in a final fantasy space-station.

was torn between OS2008 and Jim Hatama.
lots of beautiful work here. I can see that a number of you really stepped up your game for this competition. I hope to see you around EOW in the furure as you solidify the huge strides you made to produce the beautiful work here.

my vote goes out to Jonone to be frank as he has the most plauzable and not that random, project
i ve seen in the entryes here alot of random shapes added 1 over another ,ppl not beeing sure of what to do,using alor of black in perspectives and just trying to fool the eye with that contrast ..black with city lights, little details, little thinking of how tings might wrok or how ppl would be able to live there .but i liked the diversity and cant say i had another favorite project, just alot of elements from dif people!
jonone kinda took another approach here taking it from the inside with those 2 perspectives and sections through the structure showing how things lye down then the sktches of the outside plus some explanation,sf but some explanations nontheless, and i dunno it was just the most believeble.he went straight and simple and in 1 day oevrall pretty good work.
i can surely see things added there ,would have likes an exteror perspective ,not just 2 sketches .
quality over cuantity for me:) goes to jonone
PS hes names written bad ..or maybe its just me JONONE instead of jonoe as it there?
take care

I thought Lyconeous really nabbed the topic pretty good...and you're right, Jonone did have a good entry, but I didn't read any descriptions, I just want to look at art and have it explained to me from the art!
Flashrabbit's "spongebobesque" universe was really quite original and intriguing as well, and revenebo, you would have had it if you could have had my vote coming in next to Oregano though, his was just too cool.

My favorites:
cheo36 – very interesting city concepts.
os2008 – I like your color palette a lot. It could have been awesome to see more of your work.
flashrabbit – beautiful!!! Friendly and joyful environments. Lots of fun details that appear all over the compositions.
Evil_Sloth – looks so neat and colorful but I cannot tell what’s going on just because everything is so tiny. You’d have used a different layout to present your work so then the thumbnails and the main illustration looked bigger and easier to appreciate. Great idea anyways, congratulations!!!
tsujni – English is not my first language and I don’t have any great writing skills to put whatever is my head on a phrase but still, I think it’s nice to give some clues about what the viewers will see in my posts. Your work looks cool and intriguing but it’s a shame that I cannot see further than that. It looks nice anyways.
My vote goes to flashrabbit. Your work is refreshing, and even thought we’re talking about deep waters, yours still look colorful, cozy, and happy. Your final post looks and feels great overall.
Congratulations everyone!!

So much great work makes this a really tough decision. I voted for Wasker, and I tried to give everyone some brief crits. As always, I hope I don't bruise any egos.
Saturn's Gate - very dramatic compositions, but for most part I didn't find these designs as interesting as your COW and CHOW entries.
Naomi - I have to ask you a favor. Would you consider not thanking everyone who posts a nice image? I could be wrong, but I think that's not really what the 'thank you' function is for. Anyway, I liked your concept and your main exterior shot, but I think the interiors need some more structural detail. I would also strongly recommend not using pure black shadows and primary colors in your paintings.
Artiphats - impressive amount of work. The angular futuristic buildings look generic to me, but I like the coral housing and some of the carved architecture.
Trout - nice piece, but it doesn't show enough of the environment to be a contender.
Arttorney - I think this is the weakest of your DEEP entries, as you really need to be able to show more volume, atmosphere, clear detail, and those sorts of things in an environment piece.
Timothee - sweet paintings, especially the first one. I guess you've showed us enough to flesh out your description, but it still seems a bit minimal, since it gives us no idea how the aliens live. I'd like to see them in their lab or dining room or something.
COmBineD - Good start, but not quite enough to go on.
Tommoy - I like this a lot, even though it's a bit vague.
cheo36 - Even though I'm not crazy about the overall idea, I think you fleshed it out really well here, with some nice little renders and descriptions.
Lyconeus - There's no question in my mind that this is an undersea utopia. The designs are a bit simplistic, and the rendering a bit too airbrushy, but I give you points for a nice clean interpretation of the brief.
Hyptosis - It's a good idea, your visuals just aren't as compelling as some others'.
RogerAdams - I really like your approach, and although the designs don't seem particularly distinctive or specifically utopian, you've done a great job of giving me a comprehensive view of the world.
Jim_Hatama - gorgeous. I would've liked to see some closer street views or interiors, but what the hell, these rock.
os2008 - I absolutely love the way you painted this. For this challenge I would've liked to see sketches of other parts of the world, but again, what the heck it's an awesome painting.
Vorace - I wanted more variety, e.g. to see what kind of civilzation this race has built and what is left of the old structures.
bingwenlu - you did a massive amount of work, congrats. I find a lot of the architecture unconvincing, though. It's also very distopian, what with all those jails and execution buildings.
Jonny - nice painting! The thumbnails don't show much variety, and I'd like to see some interiors or closer street views.
Shera 3000 - I would suggest that rather than spend your time manipulating your drawings in Photoshop, you work on your drawing fundamentals instead. Get some reference (in this case of cities and the sea floor) and sketch sketch sketch. Use these challenges to learn how to draw things more convincingly so you have a good base before you start putting digital effects on.
EricT - For what this is, it's great. But it doesn't give us much to go on.
jonone - Very nice work.
flashrabbit - ditto.
Evil_Sloth - that's a very creative solution, and a great render.
AP - Good stuff, but I'd like to see more of where you're going.
ironchicken - good first attempt. I'd keep working on the basic skills of drawing environments (starting from life/reference).
revenebo - although it's a loose interpretation of utopia, I love what you've done with it. You really got the sense of how dark and scary it is in the depths.
Serpian - good thought process. Some of the drawings look awkward, but if you keep churning them out, they'll keep getting better.
corspufo - I like the designs, I think they're both pretty believable and pretty cool-looking. I think your colors need some work, they don't look realistic. Maybe try either painting in monotone/grey and then colorizing, or using reference shots to sample colors from?
aIexander - I'd have liked to see more sketches, especially since your paintings are so dark that they obscure a lot of detail.
TMG - I'd like to see more variety in your ideas. Brainstorm different forms, don't get stuck on variations of one concept.
Grumbleputty - Good idea, but I don't find the designs or the compositions very compelling.
tsujni - Man, you are brilliant and crazy. You don't know what to say about your pieces? How about explaining what the heck your idea is, because it's obviously very cool and unexpected, and it is totally not self-explanatory.
cyborgluddite - nice montage! Next time give us some sketches and explain your idea a bit.
Cup of Joe - the details get lost in your paintings (maybe keep linework on a separate layer?). Put some small bright highlights on anything you want to be shiny (i.e. glass, metal).
Arteater - nice piece, but it doesn't show us a concept, really.
Wasker - Kickass. Quantity + Quality = You win, even though including that last unfinished piece with the pole dancer was probably a bad idea.
Newbs - why didn't you put this in POW? This is good stuff, much clearer than the rough boards you put in POW, though perhaps not very unexpected in its design.
Oregano - I really like what you've done, and the forms you're using, I just didn't find the design or variety as compelling as a few others.
98platinum - I like those kelp forests. I'm not sure why the buildings would have that particular shape, but it works okay, except that the interiors don't seem to me to reflect the same esthetic.
Meltface - I really like the rendering style, and some of the forms. Some others feel too fragile.

No, I won't consider it, you're being extremely fucking rude for saying so, I hope you know. I actually enjoy their posts - the search function allows you to view all thanked posts by user so you can look at the cool art they post...anyways...thanks for your comment!

im gonna just say what i liked and think has potential so dont get upset or anything...its my opinion:)
98platinum :i liked that sketch on the down left corner with its frame abit extended it could turn out as a nice underwater landscape!
meltface :i rly liked some arhitectural shapes u did but didnt see things from the same page and style, just loads of thumbnails which dunno how thy all get togheter.
wasker:some nice images but didnt quite see them as from the same world ,not much concepot designing.
evil sloth:i like the compozition even tho for me that sea mosnter structure..kills it.again not much designing...more design in those rock pillars then in the arhitecture which is resumed and idicated by loads of lights and atmosphere.
revenebo:i enojy that documentary kind of shots and lighting ..discovering lost vestiges of civilazations undersea.i liked some potential alien vegetation in those
flashrabbit:u killed the scale on that 3d image ,looks like a chiosc that fell on the bottom of the sea from a passing ship:D the last 1 i think would have some potential, but the streets might need some diversity in facades textures atmosphere etc.
Naomi Ningishzidda: u tryed combining some ancient arhitectures and changed some elements that in my opinion dont work togheter.some stuff throwing u off with the perspective, the two huge statues on different planes then that zigurat thingy plus that area down below..watch your perspective:)i just got confused. about rendering i wont coment because this is about ideas mainly but try to keep things maybe abit for desaturated and get down your values right.
artiphats:whats that giant purple dildo doing there?:D
Tommoy: some nice elemets in your last 2 landscapes, theres something i like about those huge tentacles with some discs on them ,think it would be a nice starting point for something cool.
I hope peolple dont get upset after seeing me ,a new guy comenting on theyr works but this is why we wpost right? to get feedback and learn...i only crited on things that i liked or had potential or just could use some advice.
Jim_Hatama: i dunno what to say ,your city is abit of loads of city lights on a flat surface, not much arhitecture aside from that central thingy, but still all flat shapes with loads of pretty color on them l,oads of dots and colored lines.on the last image theres some trys at details but there are alot of things that..as artistic language dont fit togheter that much. its a big structures..with 3 main levels, each having theyr elements. which isnt necesarily a bad thing ,but not in this case.
os2008:i like the turtle, just a thing that imo dont work with it.the building go from that center 1 cascading down.and leaves no real thincknes to the turtle, some solid shape on which to place them on,aside from its front ,head and begining of the back.the interior perspective i only link with the exterior through that roof.
cheo36:i like the idea in principle not to perculiar about the designs
im not sure who to vote for,im not sure i liked any project particular:( i mean dont get me wrong ..just not my liking of style and designs.
and btw i kinda lmao when a friend of mine to whom i linked this challange ,started looking at entrys on eow and the others, chow idw cow and he told me he noticed not all who voted actualy wrote something and he just checked some of them and saw how they just got registered on 1.2.3.4 of july and voted for same guys .i found it funny and checked that for myself and its true,i dont rly care but its kinda lame just wanted to point that out:) no i wont give names, dont matter, its just about principles.
cheers

I had to vote for Flashrabbit on this one, hands down my favorite. I tend to vote for environments I'd like to spend time in, particularly "utopian" in nature this go-round and I thought, cartoon-world, here I come! :)

The best image winners for me are: os2008, jonny, jonone & wasker.
Wait a minute, this contest was not about the nicest image, so none of them get my vote, I think the best "world" ideas were developed by Artiphats, Urchy, Jim, Bingwen & Evil, so my vote goes for Bingwen, even though it's mostly thumbnails, it really reads as a world design taking into account not only one area but the whole world, great ideas everyone.
