Hi CA society, please help me to have a better choice!!

I want to be visual artist, I begin to practice sketch with pencil and ballpoint pen from references and sometimes imagination...But I don't know after sketching tutorials go for 3D design/sculpt or 2D digital painting!?

- 3D looks amazing, clean, breathtaking and photorealism 3D images alter my reality perception, while I have a good background to use software’s and hanging around 3D applications, also don't have any problem with performance in my Home PC!!

- Digital Painting looks amazing too, but can't feel breathtaking, more have fantasy, dreamy and inspiration feelings…while I need to learn more about color theory and painting techniques, because I don’t have any serious background in painting or digital painting!!

I love both of them and each one have own feeling, I love to be master in both…But, problem is I can’t focus on two things at same time for practice; I need to screw-up one of them now and go for another one in the future…

What you think, I really get confused and can’t decide by myself?!

Extra question is I have 23 years old, this is not too late for get into the art?!!?

Thanks

welcome to CA direct2x. :) I feel the same as you about focusing on both traditional and digital painting, it gets confusing sometimes but I still learn a little each time I practice. Here's a couple links I use for digital painting: IdiotApathy Demos (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=74478) andBumskee's Thread on digital painting (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=107217).

Your best choice is to pursue every artistic avenue with which you feel you can effectively use to express yourself and that's all there is to it. Your wording makes it sound as if you will have to discard all other choices after having committed to one and that could not be further from the truth. Yes, you will find that you'll adapt and progress more quickly with one medium than you would another but that discovery is made after you invest time and effort in both.

As for where to start, you've already got the right idea. Draw traditionally, from life. Do so regularly and with some degree of regiment. You'll find that the skills you acquire while working traditionally will in fact transfer over to the digital mediums you experiment with. In fact I'd venture the assumption that you will not find many digital painters here who aren't familiar with acrylics and oils as well. The best thing for you to do right now is to maybe take a life drawing class or find live model sessions open to the community somewhere close to you. Hook up with other people who share the same desires to excel in art as well so you'll never be that far away from encouragement.

Hope that helps a bit.

hope that clears it up.
