View Full Version : Cinematic Storyboarding with Coro (Part 2 Added!)
MassiveDVD
June 12th, 2008, 08:04 PM
All working artists have to deal with the threat of impending deadlines, but the art of storyboarding with its 50+ image projects brings this balance of time/quality to the forefront like no other. In other words, you can be good, but if you’re not quick you’ll either be on the streets, or worse, living at your parents' house.
Justin Kaufman, Art Director and co-founder of Massive Black, has done storyboards for Coca Cola, Fox, Playtone, as well as countless video game cinematics and gameplay sequences. In this download, you’ll see this veteran of traditional oil painting and high speed production art combine his talents to produce a result that’s short on time and long on quality.

The only thing more thrilling than the tutorial-vid itself is the story in the board. Coro, that whole Bum-World-Idea is fantastic. Realy.

The evil of faces...
Neat stuff, Alot of really cool tips from Coro there. My wife finds the puppy cute btw.
Massive file Coro's working with there... at one point it's pushing towards 800 MB workingspace....
Nice to see the way it works, but the most interesting part was, when it seems like it would be easy to just state "and this is the same as earlier" Cor comes in with some new info/tips or whatnot that actually makes it worth watching the same type of pass again (this time checking for new stuff).
Is it just me, or does the Bum look a bit like Coro...and "evil-pigeon-guy" looks a bit like the Black Frog.... I only seen them on images/vids though...but there are some definate likenesses.....
Now I need to look at my protfolio and get rid of red noses...to make sure Coro wont laugh behind my back :p (which will happend anyway, till I straighten other things out :lifedrawing:
Cant wait for the second part.

Doooooooooooooooooooooooood,
Just grabbed it, the opening is the shit! Oops can I say shit, shit.
Haven’t had a chance to check out the rest but will later tonight.
Had an idea for a tut from you but haven’t had a chance to post, A
Few years ago you had posted a tut on gouache and colored pencils that
I thought rocked, seeing that there are not too many Vids on the old analog stuff
This would probable be something people would want I know I do : )
Anyhow keep them coming,
-Rodney

I downloaded it twice, but it doesn't seem to play correctly, its like it needs to buffer (obviously not, but thats the best way I can describe it) Is this a problem for anyone else? I have every other download, and they all play fine.

Great stuff, really love the discussion of thought process, and "quicksand" moments. :)
One thing: Storyboard 11 seems out of context. Gregs's running left to right (the street is on his left side) for the whole sequence, and he suddenly shifts right to left (the street on his right side) and then back again in Board 12, which breaks the flow of events. I was wondering why it was done this way, or have I missed something?

The preview looks interesting. I never really done storyboards before so it might be helpful to watch it. The thoughts about reinventing the process are very close to how I struggle with art :P. It might be less rewarding path but it can lead to more interesting results.

Is there any possibility to find the perspective brushes in the part2 download?
I found them very useful to adjust perspective in a fast way.

The perspective brushes comes from M@ on here. Do a search for the name M@ and you will find the brushes in his sketchbook-topic

I think this is the one: M@.‘s Stuff (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=73169)
The reason you didn't find anything is you forgot to put the dot in "m@."

Depending which of the M@ sets you downloaded it is brush no. 1 or brush no. 10
If it's no.1 it's called "M@_vanishing_point" and if it's no.10 it's called "pers".
They are quite "crude" in the way they look, but very usefull... just put them on there with a low opacity so you can see them barely and yo'll be fine...
They're not a "quick-fix" to great art, but very usefull quick laydown of perspectivelines, instead of drawing them yourself everytime....

Very inspiring. Coro really keeps things flowing too! I noticed this time around he was a little more focused and serious than when he did his first gun designs video.

Watching Coro in this demo, and my past experiences with M@'s awesome brushes inspired me to create this:
http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1851348#post1851348
It's actually really fast and allot more flexible. Since it's vector based, it is also allot higher quality. Enjoy!

Coro, watching you work on so many panels at one time was very, very educational. The finished boards were beautiful, but the process itself was such a fun ride. I'm so happy I decided to add this to my MBDVD collection.

Great video. I just got back from watching part 1. :D The voice acting was hiliarious and the puppy was adorable. :>
I'm just wondering though: How long did it take to make all of those panels, and what kind of deadline were you/would you be under?
