If you were aiming for gross and over-the-top, you succeeded.

Is she supposed to be looking at herself in the hand mirror while she sews ("fixing her face")?

compositionally, it's usually better to avoid cutting your figures off at the knees. She'd be more dynamic if she were viewed from a different perspective (bird's eye or worm's eye).
