View Full Version : Teen Challenge #48: journey's end
TLL
June 10th, 2008, 05:35 PM
A new round
The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.
The Topic: journey's end
This is really open for interpreatation. The topic should be recognizable at your final image.
IMPORTANT
1. Add a border around your image with your name and the topic, like they do with the other of the week challenges.
2. Plese do not use attachment manager, but outside host your image.
3. Mark your final as final
The Deadline:
tuesday 2. July
three weeks this time, because I'm on holiday in two weaks and can't create a poll or new topic.

I'm definitely in for this one. I've realized my arch-nemesis "Stiffness" from the High-Tech Knight challenge thanks to Justin., saw different styles from other users of the same age group, and, in turn, it was a great learning experience.
The topic certainly gives a lot of room for imagination. I'll see what I can cook up.

The composition looks good. But I think you should spend some more time with this tree. It looks too sketchy to me.

Ok. Thanks for crit :).
I've made a new tree and updated the image.
I like the topic very much. I chose a sunset because it fit at an end of a journey (maybe it's a knight returning home from war?).

Really fast man , looks good too:) maybe add some clouds to the sky and some rim light to the soldiers. Also the land is so flat on the horizon it suggest a desert yet there are trees growing there , maybe a hill or mountain?
TLL
June 11th, 2008, 06:04 PM
I thougt about clouds too, but I think they could destoy this scenery.
Maybe you could try it and compare the sky with clouds to the sky without clouds.
But I wouldn't add lights to the soldiers. I like the contrast between soldiers and sky.
In my opinion it's not necessary to change this image. You could try something like clouds if you've got some time left but it just looks good like it is now.
Thats what I think :^^:

@ graywolff: I would do this speech again. It just doesn't look good with this big pixels. It desroys the rest of the painting.
This time I'm going to participate myself. My painting has something to do with the european soccer championship 2008. But it's a big WIP at the moment.
Gonna post it in the evening.

Nice one Zelda.
Are the mountains painted over a photo? just looks like an overpeinting on the left side of it.
Justin.
June 20th, 2008, 09:53 AM
zelda, awesome piece! simple but very very effective! I could only offer one small point of crit; The figures are dead center, and as a (very general) rule of thumb, you want to push your composition away from the center so you have "proportional interest" in the rest of the piece. I assume you've heard of the rule of thirds? It's pretty much saying that for most paintings, you'll want to put the compositional anchors 1/3rd or 2/3rds across the image. So in this case I'd probably move the climbers down the mountain a little until they are in the bottom 1/3rd of the pic. Good use of texture too, not overstated at all. Good work man!
zelda_geek
June 20th, 2008, 10:55 AM
@TLL: Well, I started from scratch and then overlayed a texture, because I start with a pic and then paint over, it's easy to become the slave of the photo. Instead of having the photo work for me :)
@Justin: Thank you I really appreciate hearing that from you, and also thank you for the crit.
I'm totally aware of the rule of third, it's just that I tend to use that in all my pieces, and they kind of look the same. So this time I wanted to break the rule to create something different, but I just tried what you said and figured out that it was reading better (though I moved the climbers around the golden ratio instead of the third). I also refined the edges of the mountain.

So guys here is my entry. First I planed to do some more german players, but I don't have no time left.
It shows the end of Croatias journey to the EURO in Austria and Switzerland.
This is no real result. It's not even sure that Croatia beats Turkey and reachs the semifinal. But I just hope this is going to be the result of the semifinal ;)

TLL: Very effective, love the idea :) the rendering is superb! one little peice of crit, the arm of the foregrounded character is a tad long, i know its annoying but maybe try finding your own way of measuring ? like from the outer thigh the the shoulders is usually the size of an arm, maybe find that size, split it in two and theres your arm? just a suggestion :) awesome work though!
Auncer: :wtf: are you SURE your a teen? so much detail! looks like a pro's :D love the colors and style ;)

Some very nice works from all involved thus far. I hope I shall find the time to complete a work of my own for this very interesting challenge.
@Zelda :: While usually the rules for dividing the image are best followed, I feel that the vector of the climbers moving toward the peak actually divides the image very well. The flock of birds and the general shape of the mountain provide interest outside of the main elements, whilst guiding the viewer's eyes to the most important parts. Most importantly, the message is very clear.
I look forward to giving it a shot.
Justin.

I don't wish to be a bother, but I have been unable to find any strict rules regarding entries into this competition and I was wondering if there were any besides the obvious one of 'no plagiarism'?
Does one have to use any particular methodology in the creation of the work? E.g. Is matte-painting (using strictly original imagery) permissible?
Thank-you in advance for any assistance you can offer.

I had so much fun with this one. Unsurprisingly, while drawing this up, I was flashing back to the gaming days of old; Paper Mario and the classic sidescrolling Earthworm Jim were my big influences. The name of the "Level," so to speak, is "Who the [censored] Knows? (Final Boss)" which is really inspired by a level from Earthworm Jim, "What the heck?" with some awesome fire and brimstone stuff going on (And evil snowmen).
I suppose, then, that my official name for this piece is "Who the [censored] Knows? (Final Boss)" Whodathunk.

Here's mine:
http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/3011/citymodel1fullcompositixt0.jpg
(Worked my rear off on this.)
This is a stylized and somewhat surreal depiction of a retro-like, futuristic city, in celebration of the return of a team of top-notch civil engineers that had been kidnapped by a rival government to do them design work (this culture takes design and aesthetics a lot more seriously than ours). By the way, the figures are still inside the loading dock.
Their mass transit system takes the form of huge (around 20 stories) tubes, (one of which is shown sweeping through the foreground) that, through electomagnetism (repelling magents), send an internal train-like tube at dizzying speeds (because it's encapsulated it's impossible to de-rail).
That culture also loves fireworks, as they have two large machines actually built into an end tube, able to be loaded and shot up in sequence to a pre-programmed "show".

Meh. You're on time in my time zone. Furthermore, the OP says Tuesday the second of July. That leaves it up for grabs as to whether or not the deadline is today -- Tuesday the first of July -- at midnight, or tomorrow -- Wednesday the second of July -- at midnight.

Well I appreciate that! I know that the official Conceptart activities run by the pacific time, and me being in Missouri it gives me an extra two hours. :) I think that those directions were a little vague...We should go for a firm deadline next time around.

Menasha-ashd, the attachment manager doesn't work in the challenge arena subforum, you need to host it on a site like imageshack or photobucket and then attach by clicking on the "Insert Image" icon (the icon with the mountains) and paste the url into the textbox that pops up.
hope that helps :)
