Hey hey.
The name's Brandon and I'm just a young cat, currently 17, trying to make it as both and artist and musician (bassist).
I know I have much to learn and I'll take any advice, though at times I'm not sure what you'll be talking about. This is where the downfall
of my home school education is, I've never been able to take an art class and I don't have artist friends (or mentors) to guide me as far as
terms and tricks go in the field of art, so like I said, any advice is MUCH appreciated. :)
I currently work for bands and various other, random people.
I hope to one day hold a job as a concept artist and eventually take on the illustration of children' books amongst other freelance jobs.
Anywho, below of some older art, but I'm editing this and putting in newer art. It's a lot, but I hope you enjoy it. :)

Thank you, it took a long time shade it all.
Cross-hatch is currently my favorite shading style, haha. :)
I'll be sure to do that, I have a couple commissions to finish.
Which I'll put up once they're finished.
Thanks again!

Good to be here, amazing site.
Thanks, though this is more of my finished stuff.
I just don't see it fit to be put in the finished section. Haha.
I should have more up soon. :)

Here is my latest piece which I did last night.
Lineart took roughly 40 minutes (minus the clouds, which took 5 minutes)
and the shading took probably an hour or two.
I'm really pleased with the outcome, which looks much better in person.
(My scanner lost more shading again)
http://i27.tinypic.com/2s8i8zs.jpg
If the buyer is pleased, I'll be commissioning this for $13 plus Advance Wars DS.
Which is about a $30 value all together.
I keep hearing about these studies and such, but what are they?
Are they just practicing human anatomy and basic poses and such?
If so, can anyone give me some good references to find some studies?
Ash888
June 11th, 2008, 03:16 PM
Nice smash brothers piece, nice pose great shading.
yes studies are drawings, they could be of anatomy or of anything you want.
they could be reproductions of other artists work, or drawings of the same subject from life. If you are looking for a book I have two suggestions:
Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life.
Atlas of Human Anatomy for the artist by Stephen Rodgers Peck
These are two of the top books for one to learn anatomy, and money well spent.
Good luck and post soon.

Thanks Ash! :)
Ah ok, gotcha. I had just been looking at other people's sketches and
they were like, "Nice studies" etc. etc. So I figured if all these crazy artists
were telling people to do studies, then I should probably start, haha.
I'll have to look up those books.
I have an anatomy book (Albinus on Anatomy, I think) that deals with skeletal
structure and structure of muscles and junk. I need to start studying that.

Well, I haven't been able to draw nearly as much as I'd like to.
I have to finish my school year, once that's up I can draw non-stop, yay!

Nice stuff bro :P
Really awesome you seem to really enjoy drawing :P
Your stuff are killers drawings are very good and shadings are also very good.
All advice i can give is that stick away from anime for a while, just practise from life and then you'll be able to get on with your own style.
Ofcourse doodle anime for fun always but not too much because it sticks with you, and i really think the style with the wow characters i think look very good.
Heres what to do, you seem to have a nice understanding of anatomy and stuff :P. But study andrew loomis's figure drawing for all it's worth, and george bridgeman's constructive anatomy.
Do life drawings: basically everything around you, From computer desk, to currtens, pillow, bed, mouse, tablet or what ever there is. If you take your sketchbook with you every where you go that will be good :P then you can sketch people on buses, parks etc it really helps.
Draw from reference, as in like a sports player, a car you like, a face or what ever it's always good practise, even stuff like spiderman (movies), blade etc are also good. Do poses and gestures, www.posemaniacs.com, do the 30 second poses and sketch them in, they might look crap at first but then they'll help and you'll get better, also what i do is when ever i watch an anime, i stop it at poses i like and draw them, so by the end i have like a page or 2 full of dynamic or just cool poses, thats a really fun excersise.
Do value studies but that will also come with life drawings , but also doing a couple of studies and just focusing on where light, shadows, etc fall will really help :P.
Hope this helps and hope to see more from you soon
peace

yo zombie, thanks for stoppin by my thread. I really like your unique rendering style. I see in some areas you do this, but make sure and kinda follow the contour of the surface your shading, it'll give it even more volume, but you probably know this. Also you've got a great use of value going on. Now that you've done a venom piece, you should do a carnage, just cause he's my favorite :P

lilnebo : Thanks alot! :D
Well, I try to do a mixture of life/anime in my style, but ever since I've
come here all I've heard is "Do life drawings!" so I'm going to have to start.
I plan to buy the Bridgman's Complete Guide off Amazon in the next
couple of days.
I actually plan to go outside later today and draw some trees, well, atleast
I'm going to try my best to draw some trees, haha.
I'll take the advice to heart, I'm not a sports fan, but I'll grab some
magazines that my dad has or something and get some poses and junk.
Steel Buddha : Thanks, but.. what exactly is contour?
I'll have to do a Carnage piece sometime, I'll let you know if I do. :D
Call0ps : Thanks! I just started doing some studies, didn't even know of them
before this site, I've already learned a great amount after 2 days being here.
And it's just the beginning, this site is so epic!!
Hopefully I can post some of my studies tonight. :)

I plan to put up my sketches soon, I just hate using my scanner.

A couple studies I did last night.
The eye and lip studies are unrelated, just close together.
I'm mostly proud of how the arm turned out (in the middle of the picture)
Courtesy of the wonderful Bridgman.

Nice start dude, your cross-hathcing technique is working nicely. Only suggestion maybe play around with more value studies(thumbnails), and focus on the dark shapes where theres no light on the subject. They can really give your pictures more impact and weight. Keep it comming. :)

Good job here, you have way more shading skills then me, I guess all I can say is post more life studies and keep at it.

brentos8 :
Thanks. :D
I'll keep that in mind, I need to ditch my mechanical pencil and begin
using graphite drawing pencils. I can only get so dark with my mechanical.
Do you have any brands you would personally recommend?

Thanks! I'll be sure to keep at it!
Going to have to keep going if I ever want to make it. :)

Atleast, for the skill I currently possess it did.

Alrighty, so I put up some new art in the first post.
The rest is roughly a year to two old. I'm not sure if I've improved well. :/
Oh well, I'm finally getting serious and more confident. :)
Here's some of my latest sketches from my "Daily Sketches series."
Such an original title, no?? Haha.

Whacked out face. The anatomy of her face, looks waaaaay off.
I'm not sure her nose and mouth are lined up correctly, but they look way too low. :/

I definitely approve of the stuff you have uploaded. As for the most recent daily stuff, the nose and mouth on that woman's face are too low. As for the studies, don't just focus one one thing: practice with perspective, color, composition, etc. when you get the chance. Side note: I also happen to be from Louisiana as well.
Nintendo_zombie
October 22nd, 2009, 09:37 PM
Thanks man! And yeah, I realized after I had inked it. I was super tired at the time. Haha.
Yeah, I hear you man. I'm terrible with color. I don't have anything to color with unless
it's watercolors, but that takes so much time for me to set up that I can't just be like,
"ooo! I want to sketch." You know?
I want to pick up some prismacolor markers and try that.
Used to I felt like I never had to time for studies, I would just take on projects
and never just sketch and such. But now I'm giving myself time to do all of that.
Anyways, thanks a lot for the advice! :)
And that's awesome that you're from Louisiana!
I've lived here for about 15 years of life, the previous were spent in Hawaii.

Your predicament with the sketch-project relation you have there got me cracked up. I'm on the totally opposite flip side, having been trying to get myself to do actual finished pieces(projects) over just messed up garbled sketches for a while(and that while is still continuing).
I'm really digging the graphically styled stuff you have, really reminded me that I'll have to force myself sooner or later to commit to permanent mediums instead of jotting down ideas forever.

Haha, well, it's just that I'm jumping out there a bit too soon I feel.
And while I'm still going to take on jobs, I still need to have time for myself to
study before I move out of my home and have to start actually paying bills, haha.
But I hear ya man, I have a lot of sketches I should finish one day, but more than likely...
NEVER WILL! MUWAHAHA.. wait.. that sucks... ...
Haha.
Thanks a lot man! Your words are much appreciated. :)

The first is another attempt at using my Grapphire.
It came out kind of cool. I'm still highly unsatisfied with my digital painting,
sooooo I have to keep trying!! :)
The next two are studies. The square from yesterday, the sphere from today.
One day they'll look awesome! Haha.
