Since everyone else was doing it, I figured hey why not start one of these things too?

Can't say I have too many things worth showing at the current moment, just a bunch of old stuff I did before. I normally draw in some sort of weird ass cartoony style, but I'm trying to take a little break from it to experiment with other things (one of the reasons why I'm here now).

I seem to be pretty handicapped when it comes to coloring/rendering stuff (hence why a lot of my stuff never ends up colored. If it does I probably felt good that day.). Specifically I'm having trouble finding good color sets that can work together, and I always end up getting frustrated with what's there and not finish. As thus, I'm left with just a crappy sketch. :[ Not many tutorials really seem to help, so I figured I should probably ask for assistance on where to start. Anatomy/Perspective/Landscapes are also another problem area for me, but I'll save that for another time. :P

For the time being though, here's a couple of boring sketches I may or may not have finished (I swear I feel like I have ADD sometimes) along with cheap coloring tests with circles/tumors. Dunno how often I'll update this, but let's just say it'll be a miracle if I did.

Nice squishy style! Really enjoy the facial expressions.

I have heard that it helps to start coloring a picture in monochrome first, to understand the values, and then experiment with more varied color (making sure to remember the values in mono). I could be wrong, so take that with a grain of salt! haha. I'm pretty much in the same position when it comes to that subject.

I've actually tried that myself before. Apparently my brain seems to be too used to doing all of the colors first since I had some turbulence when trying to pick the right values for the job. :X I'm also curious on how to properly lay colors over it, since it looks pretty "bland" whenever I tried it (although that probably ties in with poor value choice too I'm guessing.). Any specific layer type I'm supposed to use?

Not too many internet tutorials really helped me much. I dunno maybe I'm reading them wrong or I'm just not looking in the right places. I think I'd be better off asking other at this point. :P

oh and here's an old sketch I did of Max from Sam & Max last year. Excuse the Pringles surfboard, just experimenting with some "dynamic" poses I guess. :V

I swear to god I really need to get out of the habit of not finishing stuff. It's killing me. :(

Which is one of my current problems I'm desperately trying to solve. I've got all of these crazy sketches but for some reason I just can't seem to find a good coloring technique going on for them. :X The spheres are cool and all but when I attempt to do a sketch I just kinda draw a blank (Pun intended? Maybe).

Great work. I am going in to animation school soon, and your work really inspires me.

I really need to start looking into getting into some sort of art/animation school. Pretty much everything I've done up to this point is from my own experience, but now I'm starting to feel that I should just go ahead and attend one. Apparently Virginia doesn't like art much, since the only art school I know of is in Arlington (Art Institute of Washington). Maybe there's some other school around I haven't learned about yet.

I'm just hopin' it ain't too expensive. :P

Small one this time, but a slightly more recent sketch of the character in the first post. :V

Haha, I really should be more focused on doing some more color studies. :X

Almost forgot about that place actually. I haven't looked up too much info about it yet, but didn't cartoonist such as Genndy Tartokovsky and Craig McCraken attend that school? If I can somehow make the trip from Virginia all the way to California, I'll consider it.:teeth:

Haha I'm a sucker for cartoons. I love the bubbly features that little dragon character has. It'd be nice to see some in color someday.

Keep postin', mang~

All the great 2d animators went there, I think your work is strong enough.
And thats where all the jobs are.

hey i forgot about this almost

nothing worthwhile except some bullshit sketch of one of my newer lizard thingies (Decorii, based on the latin word "decorus") for a personal project of mine. I gotta break the habit of not finishing at least some sort of doodle.

ive still yet to find a good way to color my sketches :[

the lizard girl ("Whatshername") with the huge ass hair was drawn by one of my friends, I just did the crappy coloring job (slowly getting better, but not much :X)

Trying out a different coloring method in Painter. Much more efficient and quicker than my older methods. :D

I'm using one of my friend's sketches as a test subject of sorts. Don't mind the tail I was just experimentin with something. :V

The warm colours look great. I'm not sure how to help you on the cool colours. Be careful about making your characters unintentionally andgrogenous... The latest pic has a very masculine, serious expression... Yet all the soft "fluffy" curves and the eyelashes imply that this is a woman. If it *is* a woman, make the eyelashes a little more dominant (not too much, don't rely too much on eyelashes, dresses and pink ribbons like the old cartoonists did), and try to use a different colour scheme to show some femininity.

Actually the character belongs to one of my friends, and it does happen to be a female. I suppose I could've made the eyelashes a bit more noticeable in this version though. He doesn't seem to have too many colored versions of his character in his gallery, so I just went off from what was there. :V

You can see one of his original sketches of this character here. (http://runde.deviantart.com/art/at-it-again-92583974)

Thanks for the comment though. :D

Bunnie! Yay.

The way you render light hitting forms is very nice, and your color choices are great also. Your lines have a nice feeling of flow to them too. The only thing I can say is keep working on the underlying structure and forms. Occasionally your figures have a tendency to become a bit unclear or mushy looking.

The Bunnie one is quite nice though, I can tell you are improving. Keep it up! Is that Painter of Photoshop?

haha that's actually one of my main flaws im currently trying to fix. i tend to put the contours over volume/form and things usually look screwed up after i finish it (IF I finish it)

As for the Bunnie, that was colored entirely in Painter.

Ok I figured I couldn't let this thread hanging, so I'll post a little something I was working on last night. It's a sketch of a minor character in a personal project of mine I'm still conceptualizing

http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/1332/dablueprint.png

I seemed to have hit a roadblock with the hands/feet. I still haven't quite figured out how a good way to tackle those yet. :X There's a few other problems I took note of as well (including the direction of the tail I neglected to mention), maybe you folks can point out some others. :V

make sure you keep on the traditional pencil stuff
as much as the digital

thanks for the comment

i tend to draw more on paper/pencil than with tablets, i just haven't gotten around to really scanning anything as of late (i.e. lazy) and tend to post whatever digital experiments i have lying around. :P

i should probably get around to doing that

Hey I didn't forget this

at any rate heres one of those damn ponies drawn in SAI and my first real stab at 3D modeling (which doubled as a test to see how much anatomy I remember) using Sculptris

admittedly i did pretty poor on the hands/feet, which I didn't study too much yet :X
