I'm a first year at Carnegie Mellon and as of now I am studying Communication Design and Human Computer Interaction. First years dont pick their specific concentration (communication or industrial) until the summer before sophomore so for me that is now.

My background is mostly graphic design with bits of other things poking around (illustration and web) for a couple of years and I have no issues with the graphic design field as a career.

However, my real interest is in drawing concepts designs, especially fantasy things for video games and such. I really feel that that is the career that I would enjoy the most, while graphic design is very closely behind. Not that I am not interested in graphic design; I actually love it, but the excitement and high i get from graphic designing is way different from concept art/drawing.

ANYWAY.
My problem is I don't know if I want to switch to Industrial Design at CMU. I will be able to learn about generation of form in a 3d space and all that other design stuff, but I don't know if that will contribute to a concept design career.

What I have planned now is just to go ahead with Communication Design (graphic design) and Human Computer Interaction for undergrad and draw on the side, taking one or two courses at Art Center (art center at night) in the summers between my schooling at CMU, and then apply to a program for concept design (entertainment design at accd or something). That path is very arduos in terms of drawing things because I will be doing it by myself with very to little of my communication/interaction design learning contributing to the concept art stuff.

My one issue with choosing Industrial Design is that I don't particularly want to become a product designer, I would much rather be a graphic designer. I don't want to end up with a degree in Industrial Design and land myself in a career that I don't like.

I'm especially concerned because the Carnegie Mellon ID program is very research oriented and a lot less wham-bam-thank-you-maam that I feel would help me in concept design.

I think that's it.
Any help would help.

ALSO: sidenote
Any books/sites with stuff that could help me in terms of concept art / design? Specific artists?

I think anyone here will tell you it's not the degree, but the portfolio, that really counts.

There's also some relevant discussion about industrial design and its application to concept design over here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=126863). What I gather is that it all really depends on your interests. If you prefer character design over setting/world design, then switching majors to give yourself more time to focus on figure drawing and the like might be better.

Also...this is quite possibly the best site to come to to study all the skills needed for concept design. Check out the sketchbook forum and the critique forum, and the challenge forums are REALLY good. (I have a small handful of drawings I've never posted for the 'Weekly' challenges, but my lack of a scanner doesn't stop me from trying my best)

See the sticky for free online art books (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=94571) for a good and free starting point for books. The links for Loomis' books are especially worth a look, if you haven't already studied those.

Concept design books specifically...I think I've read some rave reviews of the "Art of the World of Warcraft" book because it shows the concept design process.

And welcome to CA!
