"This four-part series covers the process and working methods Kemp uses for designing science-fiction vehicles for the games and entertainment industry.

In part 1, Kemp utilizes a typical job sheet to assess the goals and needs of a client. Once he has his general direction he begins creating thumbnail sketches in Photoshop to begin the design process. Working in a side-view, plans are drawn up to work out issues of proportion and engineering.

Part 2 begins with Kemp choosing the three best thumbnails and taking them into Google Sketchup. The rough models are made and then Kemp takes these into Photoshop to add mood, lighting, and texture.

Parts 3 and 4 refine the processes above to further develop a single design. The Sketchup model is finalized and then Kemp returns to Photoshop to create a deliverable ortho and final illustration for a client.

The whole series provides a beautiful example of the way in which artists (and their clients) can use the iterative process to refine a rough idea into a fully developed asset. Kemp’s candid narrative reveals a great depth of experience in areas of design, approach, client relations, and more."

@MassiveDVD,

I’m not sure if your aware of this but the opening to part 3 tends to jump frames at the
beginning of the video. It seems that this happens with quicktime at time of compression
when there is not enough memory at hand when it’s time to compress…......Or maybe
It’s just the file I downloaded? Let me know if you can.

Tanks,
-Rodney

sweet stuff man. really great tips on presenting concepts and modeling vehicles.
definitely worth picking up for that, presentation is probably one of the most important things many people forget about.

also some good insights on how to use sketchup. great job. can't wait for #4

My god, man. The vids completely blew my mind. Especially the last one. You have unlocked such power in Sketchup. Now I will be able to do more than just guns! Thanks so much.

I do wish the video would slow down in some parts. Had to replay some sections a couple times to catch what you were doing. But yeah, overall, I don't think I've been this excited about trying out a new technique in a long time :D

Studio Colrouphobia, Rodneydollah, GusTheRobot, Neonoir and Nonie,
Thanks for the kind words yall.

Rodney: hmmm, I'll look into it with Aaron. If we can fix it I'll send you a new one

Nonie: Aaaa you're too kind :) Yea components are the shit. I really works out super well for the design process once you get into the habit of making everything out of them. I'm glad you got inspired and I'm excited to see what you come up with. Show my ass up! :) Sorry it moves so fast, it's tricky planning these vids out.. I think if I split it into 2 vids it'd get boring and that would be poopy. But yer right, it does move too fast. Of course, if anything needs further explanation juss hit me up!

Thanks again for getting the video and posting up your comments guys. I think this one is the best in the set but hopefully it integrates well with the series. I'll try and one-up it for part 4 which I'm working on now. Stay tuned!

Thanks allot for this series Kemp, I am really looking forward to the final. I think MB should try to do more series like this, some things you just cant get through in 2 hours of DVD.

I would love to see some game enviro and character pipelines.

Great job on this series.

Hey Kemp,

Thanks for the awesome tutorials. I can't wait to see the last part. I've used your ideas to develop my own concepts, and these videas were extrmely helpful (and inspiring). I love seeing the work flow, from idea, through the entire iterative process.

Finally got the cash to download and watch this part.
Really neat trciks coming out of this one, especially like the "how to use the sketchup to make an ortho in Ps" part, I hadn't thought of the 1px+2px export thingy, though it makes sense it wasnt really something I was concidering, way to punch out stuff!

I was wondering- how long (aproximately) did this particular part take? It looks like massive amounts of time...
