This is an older piece and I apologize if you have already seen it. This was done for David Farland's book "Runelords:The Sum of All Men." It was on the inside of the hardcover. I post it to further introduce myself to the forum. As I mentioned in the Drider post, there are some more new pieces to come as soon as they are published, I can post them. Again thanks for viewing, hopefully you haven't seen this one before:

well done howard.
if you don't mind a crit, the leafs on the street overlaying the giant look too layered, like you did them with a tradational sponge.

I think that is a sweet pic. It kind of has the look or a Jeff Easley.
My only crit is that the top of his staff gets a little confusing at the top when it touches the leaves. It's hard to tell if it's behind or in front. It looks like it's more in front and by the placement of his feet and the tree, it's supposed to be behind. I think you should bring those branches and leaves downa bit more in front of the staff so it's a bit more prominent that they're more infront of the staff.
Great work.

looks like a mystic from the dark crystal :D
great job! How do you do the shading and such for the colors. because you can find the color your searching for but it will end up being a flat color. Do you use cuts?

Krail - I am pretty sure that it is issue 313. It is incredibly hot. I guess we set a record here the other day. 102 in October! Ugh. This is the longest that it has been this hot since they started recording. Thanks for the compliment on the painting.
strych9ine - Thanks!
davi - there always has to be something with you! :) I think you are right on with that observation. There are parts of the piece that make me cringe a little. I am very happy with the overall feel the piece has, but there are some areas that I would do differently now, and that is one of them. You been busy lately (you start your new job yet, I can't remember when you said that was going to happen? You have been MIA on MSN. Anyways, thanks for the response, and in particular the crit.
Khaifin - I don't think that in itself is bad, but I do think it stands out a little bit with the rest of the piece. Nothing terrible, in my eyes, but a little.
the machine god - Good crit and I appreciate the response. I am not as big of a fan of Easley as I once was. Growing up, he kept me looking at his work for hours.
killer_gym_sox - What can I say. I am a huge Froud fan. I have just about every book he has been part of and a few posters and prints too. The design of the character came from the book, but I am sure that filtering that through me, some Dark Crystal got in there! Not sure what you mean about the color selection. I painted it in Painter 5 a few years back if that lends any insight.
Thanks all for your response. Can't wait to post more!

Really like this piece, the giant has loads of character. The background is lit perfectly and the whole piece has a good atmosphere.

infinitipo - Not that many unfortunately. I have been buried in the cogs of game development painting textures and creating the occasional concept for quite a few years. The opportunities and time to actually paint have been few and far between.
Thanks again for all of the kind feedback. I'll post more soon! :) I have a couple more paintings that I have finished that will be able to post in the next couple weeks and I am working on five more commissions that should follow soon thereafter. Thank you again.

I did work at Saffire for a few years. I know Don very well, but I don't know Justin. He has some great work though. He started working there after I left, I believe. There was some amazing talent there. Ryan Wood, Todd Harris, Mike May (feeb), Alan Tew (still there and his website is here (http://www.beeba.net)) were all there doing some amazing work. Alan is still there doing alot of design work. It was a great experience and was my first job in the game industry.
David Wolverton (writes Runelords under the name David Farland) came to Saffire with the Runelords book and wanted us to do some illustrations for him. I don't know how many pieces they ended up with, but I there were quite a few.
