View Full Version : Mirroring Sketches

I tried to search for how to do this, but I have a feeling that I just don't know the terms to search for...

What I would like to be able to do when working on orthos is sketch one half of the image and have it duplicated in real time on the opposite side. Obviously I could just sketch half and then duplicate and flip the layer horozontally, but I'd like to have immediate feedback on the breadth of the sketch.

Any idea how to do this in Photoshop? I'm also going to post this question in the Painter section since I use both programs and would like to have options, so feel free to reply to either post.

Thanks! :yayca:

Being able to quickly mirror a drawing is one of my favorite things about working digitally. Although it's not exactly what you're looking for, I've bound "X" to flip the image horizontally by editing the hotkeys in the preferences. I'd love to here if there is a way to do it as you describe, but I've found this method very fast and efficient.

Yeah, I don't think Photoshop is capable of such a thing. For me mirroring every once in a while works just fine.

Now, if for some reason you absolutely must have this functionality above all else, the only program that I know of that does in fact let you do this is Blender. It's a little overkill since it is a 3D app (free, open source and so on), and its brush system is primitive compared to Photoshop's, but you can paint directly onto a 3D model, and making two planes with mirrored UV coordinates is very easy to do.

But again, creating some kind of Photoshop action/macro that will do this for you is really the way to go.

Yeah, I've been playing around with Maya and that's what actually got me thinking about how nice it would be if I could do that in the programs I paint in.

It's not a vital function, it's just one of those things that would be cool if there was already an option in place.
