off to a nice start, i like the studies, they are coming along nicely. i think you could use some more work on your anatomy. so maybe try doing some bridgman or loomis studies, and some life drawing wouldn't hurt either. keep it up.

August 16th, 2008, 03:52 PM
Hi and don't be afraid to continue to use ref. they will really help you with anatomy. Look at ref for these last two especially for the crotch area, not correct, the faces out of your head seem to be beautiful on the other hand. It is not cheating to use ref. at all especially when your learning. Very good start here - also the limbs are very extra long - I'm still learning too, fyi! Thanks for posting.

August 18th, 2008, 02:48 PM
i did use a little reference on that pic for the hips, but it was a picture that i wasn't happy with while i worked on it and i kept screwing with it when i should have scraped it. the crotch does look likes its folding over :( thanks for the comments.
edit:my friend pointed out a good number of mistakes so ill go back and fix those and work on the face some more.

Hi, nice studies. Reminds me a bit of my own photoshop studies, trying to copy it exactly as the photo ref. Learned a lot from doing that. I think your main problem at the moment are faces, so also keep studying faces separately.
You did a pretty good job at the last one you made, but there are some things to point out. The one you painted seems to have a sort of bump on her head. Also her crotch should go a bit more to the right, so that it's right under her navel. Also the shoulder area should be a bit more wider.
You are definitely on the right way, keep on studying and you will get better and better. ;)

August 21st, 2008, 01:38 PM
good stuff... as for guidance all I have is 2 things on the photo study
for faces make sure you have the big shape first...the outline of the face....
if you compare yours with the photo it seems a little tall. If that initial shape of the face is wrong its never going to feel completely right.
also the eyebrow on the right is looking strange, mainly because the value of the area just underneath is brighter than in the photo, if you darken that and maybe soften the edge of the eyebrow just a little it would help.
N-man
August 21st, 2008, 08:00 PM
thanks:) yea i'm probally going to re visit that guys face in the future.
this next one made me really happy when i worked on it and i think it came out really well. i think its my best piece so far hope you guys think so too. this took about 3hours i think. and by the way am i scaling these down correctly? i save the the high res version as a jpeg then create new documents of lower resolution and scale them down?

Good works here dude, that photo practice def helps, i did something similar recently and its amazing how much we just dont see unless we start to analyze it. I hope your picking your colors yourself too, instead of sampling, this will really help with your understanding of what colour does. keep it coming dude ;-)
N-man
August 25th, 2008, 11:06 AM
thanks RandAlThor:) yes i pick my own colors, but until the womens face study i didn't really think about what colors i was using. i was just picking colors and putting them down, and if they weren't right id just overlay another color until it was. now i'm thinking "am i adding grey to this color?" "how saturated is it?" stuff like that. my colors seem to be better now that i'm doing it which makes me happy.
anyways been busy lately and only had enough time to a quick study. i mainly was trying to get the color right on this one.

Keep it up, you're doing well :) I notice you have very accurate color values on the ones you're working from reference - are you sampling directly from the photo for the colors? If so, do some studies where you focus on the right values, and put the form on the back burner for a minute. Craig Mullins practically survives on good color values ;)

no i find the colors myself so that ill actually learn color. i have figure drawing classes but i work from photos when i dont have class.
i just found out that once again my monitor had whacked out color and brightness.i always wondered why my friends had such negative reactions to some of the colors i used. i find out today my brightness was so high that areas that were black to my friends had brighter colors to me. I used that thx optimizer so hopefully everything is better now. im going to post below what i was seeing and what you guys saw.

Great update; I'm particularly impressed with how you handle material in your paintings (skin, fabric, metal, all look exactly how they should, and you seem to handle it with such ease).
