My non-incriminating doodles - Now with naked people

I already Posted my picture of the girl in the brown dress in the Critique center and got some great feedback that I tried to work into my latest sketch. (should be the topmost picture.)

You don't need me to tell you this, but I draw a lot of girls. Two of these are Oekaki's but the rest are Photo shop. I usually don't save the pictures I draw when doing that 30 second pose thing at posemaniacs, but I'll be sure to do so tonight and post them (as well as some other figure stuff) tomorrow.

Hi, Katy.
You have a nice and interesting use of colours in the sketchs here.
What you need to improve and refine is your figure structure. They have a beautifull appeal, but there are some distortions on the heads and faces. But with more training, it`s something very easy for you to correct.

One fast tip, use a comand that flip the canvas horizontally from time to time, just to check the distortions.

Thanks a lot~ Flipping the image usually freezes my computer, though cutting down on PS's memory has helped me work with bigger files recently, I'll see if I can get them to flip easier. (currently working on a figure study)

I did however just finish a speedy Posemaniac exercise, though honestly, to me some of the models seem a little off balance.

Well,Katrina,there are some anatomical issues in your pics,as well as perspective issues,but nothing that can´t be fixed with lots of studies and practice!Work on lighting too,this is a difficult subject which needs lots of hours and tons of patience until you can handle it.I see that you use a very soft brush that makes some of your pics very blurry....I think it doesn´t work,so try with hard brushes.Also,try to blen the colors a little bit more,you´ll obtain a cleaner and more realistic result!

Here's a torso study, I didn't use any soft brushes this time. :D I think it's an improvement. About one hour in Photshop, looked at a standing pose maniac pose, but it's mostly from imagination. I drew it in greyscale first then added some overlay layers.

I had a slow week. Some more sketches, mostly poses, one figure study.
I did a few water color - I can't hook my scanner up until morning though.
I posted two of the refs for the sketches/studies, the figure ref file is too large to upload(even after resizing) but it's a free sample from female-anatomy-for-artists.com.

A question about the copyright info when you upload - do I put my name if it's a sketch/etc? And what if I used reference? Another - 4b pencil, colors added in PS.

Thanks for stopping by! And yes, eyes are so fun to draw, but there aren't any really in this picture.

With the guy in profile, sadly, I was trying to focus on forms and anatomy. The second try of the day (the man looking down) seems to have worked out better.

About ten-twenty minutes each. The refs are screen shot-ed from Youtube videos, I don't know who they are. Is it alright to draw from them? It's just for practice - but what if I end up using one for reference?

Yeah, I'ld put my name on in, even when it's a sketch. If it's totally a sketch of a reference pic, then put down "from observation" I guess. If it's like 10% reference (the pose or the face or whatever) stick down from Imagination.

Don't worry about using your youtube screenshots for practise. If you were to make a commercial pic that you were going to make money off, you should go photograph a reference model yourself. Or pay for a copyrighted pic.

Your sketches are nice, but a bit hesitant. Your colours are great, sometimes - like in Mercy final or the girl on the beach - they have a lovely, living, liquid quality. You need to frim up your anatomy skills and the sense of balance of your characters. And be confident in your line. You're heading the right direction already anyhow. ;)

Hey i really like your colors and the faces of your characters are really cute too. :)
Here are some tips maybe they can help...

Try to study anatomy as much as you can, if you want you can use books and newspapers/magazines to copy from there your figure positions and how each limb conects to each other.

If you don't have a sketchbook (real paper one), get one and take it with you as much as you can...draw everytime and anywhere, try to sketch from life, people, buildings, cars, animals....

Try drawing different faces as much as you can, not only cute girls and guys, draw old men/women, children, animals....

I'm not a pro. artist but i think those things can help you, keep up the great job :)

I did draw an old person a few hours ago, doesn't look much like the reference picture but I think it's an improvement from my first post.

Nice start KatrinaYou're definitely going in the right direction, and you've had some great comments, so I won't repeat whats been said. Regarding what you can copy and can't copy. I sought legal advice so that I didn't get into trouble, and what I was told, was that you can pretty much use anything as a reference as long as you don't do it for profit. I think Photobucket is an exception to this, as I've seen artists use hpoto's posted there and had them removed. I tear pictures from the daily papers, magazines, etc, for ref, and of course the 'net. There's a lot out there to choose from. Hope that lawyer knew what he was talking about, but so far so good. Hope this helps.

Two month gap xD I've been doodling outside ever since it got warmer D: I'll try to upload most of them but they're not very impressive lol. Here's a quick study I did last night, I have a problem when it comes to copying things, I just never get it in exactly the same angle or same size, or something. I've tried using lines to divide the page/canvas but it doesn't seem to help much.
I don't think it's a bad thing necessarily, but I'm pretty sure that even though you're not going to directly copy anything seriously, you should still be able to?

Anyway, greyscale lighting practice from last night and the ref (it's from character designs.com, a coreshadow package that doesn't seem to be online anymore but they still have packages with this model)

Anatomy studies are squirreled away in my drawers, I had to hide them from an uninvited guest. In my defense I HAVE been trying to draw different kinds of figures, not just young attractive people. I drew some old people in form fitting clothing I promise D:

Also, a question about uploading (sorry for asking so many questions about it), For the uploads I put myself as the copyright owner unless I use a 'direct reference'. I'm pretty sure that's accurate, but I also heard somewhere that you have to buy a copyright?

The naked guy with extra arms/legs is my favorite D: I saw some sketches by Janaschi on Deviant art that did the same thing, that motivated me to try it.
The picture of the forest nymph/tree stump girl is very fuzzy, since then I've switched to using much harder brushes, in most cases the pencil tool with regular brush supplements. It seems to work, I'll show you a wip using said technique in the next post D: I'll stick it in the Crits forum too, since I'm stuck on it.

cool sketchbook if you dont already i suggest you get some figure drawing book like Bridgemen and Loomis , I think there are some free one you can download on the net just seach around.

It's been slow so far this year , some of my goals are to get better at Lighting, composition, Perspective, Anatomy and to draw outside of my comfort zone.

The figures are from imagination, I really like how her face came out.

Pretty much a full year since my last post, how embarrassing.

Let's see if I've gotten any better with Anatomy, Lighting and Composition? I think I did manage to draw outside my comfort zone, but they never made it past the sketch.

These are all out of order, some are studies, some are concept doodles for a personal project, most are experiments.

Geez it's been a while. I started school in January and got pretty busy from then to now. Most of my sketches are really quick and nothing special, but I figured it's better than posting nothing. I'll clean up my sketchbook scans and try to get all of them up here.

Hey Katrina, love your colors and the majority of your figurative pieces, and those eyes really pop! The face of the girl on the left of the composition in post #8 is excellent too. I would only encourage you to elongate the extremities of your figures, many of them feel as if their to short in relation to the size of their heads. The easiest way to check yourself on this is to pick up books that help you identify proper proportion, so just by looking at something you can fix it if it's a bit off. Any anatomy book will help. Keep it up!
