i started this painting for my clothed figure assignment. its 42"x42" oil on canvas. here are the steps i have done so far. ill probably end up finishing it tomorrow. i just want to see if you guys have any suggestions or anything. there are these really cool reflected lights on the ceiling and light bulbs...but i dont know if they attract the eye too much away from the rest of the painting. i had them even more intense before, but i toned them down. let me know, thanks!

i start out by just blocking in the composition with some burnt umber using a large brush..and trying to keep things pretty loose and shape oriented.

now i just throw down some basic colors to just fill the canvas

awesome man. It's cool to see the steps, thanks for posting that. I don't think the spots on the ceiling detract at all. to me the guy's white outfit is the strongest focal point, second is probably the window/wall in the back.

daarken: Fanstastic stuff! The colours are marvellous and your painting technique is really nice. Was it your intention to do this Alla Prima, or did you allow it to dry between sessions?

very very cool!

i think the lightbulbs make the image somewhat buisy, but that only helps experiencing the action of that scene.
also i think they make for a great composition.

dan: yeah, i was thinking it might be too busy as well...but i just thought they would be really cool to have in there, haha.

ceenda: thanks man! your speed paintings are totally awesome. i almost always do alla prima paintings...like all my self portraits are done in one sitting, but i knew this one would take longer just because it is about twice the size i usually work at. plus i thought i would play around with letting it dry and trying new things.

jeff: yeah, those two window looking things in the back are actually posters that i havent resolved yet. so they will be pushed back more because now they draw too much attention

matt: cool, ill let u know about coros show too.

jmac/fipse: no prob, thanks for looking!

The main thing that really jumps out is thats those lights above are painted too high key, while the rest of the painting is in the middle to low key of chroma. Other than that, in my opinion its just seems really busy. You've made your focal point quite obvious, but theres just so many other things going on. I guess thats the hard part about painting scenes. Cant wait to see the finish though.

i dont think its too busy... you've made the focal point quite obvious, and the way the guy from the far right is looking at the center of attention really helps too.. id say, keep the posters off white and red.. but i think if you put text on the poster it will attract attention
