[ Somewhat connecting to the current run of creature/character/environment etc. of-the-week "DEEP:UnderWater Utopia (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=125901)" thing that's afoot, I'm gonna slant topics in that direction. ]
[ Just to be clear, "Fauna" is a word that refers to animal life. ]
[ ...And "Mega-Fauna" refers to large animal life. ]

a giant plant the grows overtop of underwater volcanos encasing the lava within the leaves and eventually turning it to stone, once petrified the stone shatters releasing millions of spores to drift the current to the next magma source it finds 40 min painter
admittedly I miss read the brief as magma flora but decided to post it anyways with my original thought on the picture instead of changing the "plant" to a rooted creature. sorry

Noiram: interesting idea, but... it's "flora", not "fauna"...

here's my take on the theme...
is it a pig? is it a dolphin? is it a dog? a cat? a veery ugly mermaid?
You decide ^^,
I made this with the gimp for a change, struggling to befriend the unfriendly interface, we're slowly starting to get along better, the open souce code enfant terrible and I. *bullshit bullshit*
Ugh! I just noticed an ugly dark stripe in the right edge of the picture! just ignore it, okay? :P

sweet colours Noiram
just saw Psychostrat 's, beautiful, as usual, maybe the lab has too similar silhouette to the fish to read strongly against them? still dead pretty though

Thanks maths82, think your right about the silhouette... maybe it needs more edge shape silhouette.... However, yours is a MEGA MEGA MEGA-FAUNA "maths82" :), liking the diver perspective with lab concept.

I saw this thread earlier today and thought it would be cool to add to it. Here's what I came up with. The "lab" is absent but everything else is there.

Here's my entry. I spent little under an hour on this one.
Noiram.. you gave me a great idea. I remember seeing something on the discovery channel about hydrothermal environments on the ocean floor. something I kinda went with.
razorbjc... I love your view on this topic. I think you could have thought outside of a crustacean, but I love the fact of something getting lifted into an examining bay. cool.
psychostrat... nice job with the coral. I like your color choice. I know how hard it was to try to produce a different sort of marine lab.. I agree that it has the same sort of silhouette value as the fauna. Good job overall.
rusty_01..after posting my image.. I saw your image link. very nice. I like your sense of scale. good color choice as well. I would've wanted to see the figures maybe a little closer to the camera. great job conveying the theme.

First time doing this, it was fun. Unfortunately, I only have Adobe 2.0, so there is no good brush modifier. The paiiiin.
~20 min. A very large, seemingly carnivorous whale. Evolution took this species up to the next level in regards to their eternal battles with giant squid..:

Longineus: that is a very large animal... really gets you thinking how it might "continue"...
asaru: they look like candy, slightly cute (to me) , but the copper thingy at the top is nice
Kezrek: Welcome to the dsg, I'm kinda new here myself too. Nice piece. I like how the whale looks.
Virinun: he looks really happy
scho81: nice and dark :) I love the colours
You all have really fine pieces. keep drawing
