Thanks, I used to do a lot of watercolor paintings a year back, but suddenly made the switch back to acrylics.

That landscape I posted was a revisiting on the spontaneity of watercolors. I used watercolor to splash some color down and then used gouache and pen to finish it up.

For the longest time, landscapes were the main focus of my art. I think it had something to do with the fact that, in a landscape -- one without buildings or people and where everything is natural without any man-made structures, you can focus on painting what you see, not needing to worry about perspective or whatever.

you could throw together a sketch in say, 3 minutes to get the basic composition down, and then spend the next week or so painting it, and figuring out what works and what doesn't.

It was only a year ago that i finally decided to include some aspect of civilization in to some of my landscapes.

numlaut
May 19th, 2008, 09:13 PM
This is about a few months older than the first landscape I posted.

Last year, i wanted to make a series of maybe 20-ish paintings on a cave civilization that I came up with, but it never came to fruition. knowing me, if I ever did follow through it would probably be 8-9 paintings before i finally get sick of it.

This is the first of the series-that-never-was, and is supposed to be the gateway (viewed from the inside) leading from the outside to that cave-city thing. I like to call it "the Gateway." lol. lame.

you can see the gateway in the first painting in the background. the first painting is called the "trade district." :x

I never really finished the painting, the version posted is from before I decided to fill in some of the brown, and fix several mistakes. I don't have the most recent with me at the moment, nor do i know when I'll get it back, but when I do i'll see if i can post it.

there are a lot of things that went wrong with the painting. I think the first thing you'll notice is "...wait, why are the lanterns bigger than the buildings and the ships?" -- that was an error on my part, that I left be, mostly because I liked lanterns and I thought the idea of a outrageously large lantern was cool.

Second, I think i messed up on the perspective, and the water, and the -- ok, lets put it this way. there wasn't a lot of planning that went in to this piece. I didnt use any references (I rarely do, although that is something i plan on changing,) and i just wanted to get at it.

yay. done ranting.

Fabriano sketchbook, I'm disgracing it. :[

At LACMA with my adv. drawing from the nude class, among other things. The trip to LACMA is from pages 7 and on, the crap before is from home and elsewhere.

To be honest, the only thing I like in this sketchbook are my drawings of my dog on pages 4, 5, and six.

My gesture sketches are also very uncontrolled, but I suppose it takes practice. I actually like yours a lot; they seems to flow much better than my own.
The paintings are great too, you use colour very well.

First two spreads in my new moleskine woo

The first was just a random painting to get me to start using the sketchbook, while the second looks alright to me at the moment, but I get the feeling that there are some anatomical errors here and there that I haven't noticed.

I really like the work you're producing, the traditional paintings look great...very strong, I love looking at your brush technique. You're a student at the Art Center? How's that treating you so far?

numlaut
March 23rd, 2009, 11:03 AM
Thanks sketcheth, Art Center is brutal -- I haven't slept right in almost a year and all I can think of now is the break coming up in about 3 weeks. But I love it!

Another painting, the mouth and chin are a bit rushed. I kinda slapped them on the last five minutes of the pose. It was a two week pose, but i missed the first week so this is all I got... :|

I'm gonna submit uncropped paintings from now on.

Finished this a while ago, but didn't have a chance to post due to the INTENSITY of finals.

numlaut
April 20th, 2009, 02:33 AM
Can't remember when this was finished, but it was probably around Week 9 or 10. The assignment was to illustrate an article of my choosing. I picked one about some guy who tried making coffee with odd things because his water is frequently shut off just as hes getting out of bed. Turns out hes tried black tea, Perrier, and flower vase water. None of which worked, might I add.

numlaut
April 20th, 2009, 02:35 AM

Acrylics dry fast from my experiences. They that way for you?

Hey man your still life paintings are really cool, and I dig your sketchbook pages. That analytical figure is really nice too, very solid. Just watch the muscles on his back and arm on the left side... it looks a little too twisted, although that just may be the pose and the exaggeration that comes with analytical figure drawing. Either way it's pretty sweet.

Keep posting!

Some miscellaneous figures. Mostly they were invented and a few were really quick copies. Also included is a photoshop painting that I did last night in class. Edit: Hm. Now that i find myself staring at this painting, i realized that not only are his eyes on completely different axes, i made it look like he got some skin removed from the left side of his scalp and from underneath his jaw. its really disturbing now that i see it. again, a 30% chance that I'll go and fix it. lol.
