I was making some custom brushes last night in Photoshop CS3 Standard for a painting I'm doing and I noticed that after making each brush the icon shows the number 16 in the top right corner. See the two screen shots. I've never noticed this icon before on a brush icon. What does this mean? How have I never seen this before? I've been working with Photoshop since before the rad brush engine was added. How is this new to me?

No idea why it's there or why anyone would need to know but I'd guess it refers to "16 bit".

Why wouldn't I want to know what a 16 sub-icon means on my custom brushes? I've never seen it on them before so it's got to mean something. And I don't think it's 16 bit because all of my starting documents to make these brushes were 8bit and there are no 8 sub-icons or 32 etc. Who wouldn't want to know every aspect of their program if possible?

Sorry, you've picked me up wrong. I understand completely that you want to know - I want to know too, that's why I went hunting for an answer. All I meant was that I have no clue about why 16 bit, etc. is important. I know it must be to someone, perhaps everyone.
I'm guessing. Have a look at this:

The 16 has magically disappeared. I didn't change anything in Photoshop or in the way I make brushes. I woke up this morning opened Photoshop to get some painting in before I've got to leave for work and all the brushes that had a 16 sub-icon now don't have it anymore. And I'm still working on the same painting as yesterday and as seen in the screen shots. Goofy Photoshop!
