View Full Version : Theft at a professional level:

This is not about any specific artist, this was inspired by several "artists" who are not what they claim to be, and no, I won't name names.

I just wanted to know, what does everyone think when they find out that a professional level artist is actually a thief or otherwise lies about how their art is created?

Does it make the business seem easier to get into for you? Does it annoy you that a job has been taken up by someone who is a thief?

Personally it always disturbs me when someone gets caught for thieving and they're not some 14 year old who reckoned that a bit of smudge on a stolen photo makes it their painting. I also feel sorry for the companies who hire these people, I mean who wants to suddenly have to destroy/change loads of merchandise just because someone has tricked them into accepting stolen imagery.

That's why you typically sign a contract with a whole section outlining who's responsible for court costs and liablity in reference to the "originality" of work.

If I see it at a pro level, I'm disgusted and also amused. It's only a matter of time before someone spots a rip or similar shady behavior, so the futility of it all makes me laugh. Personally, I once had a good friend fresh out of art college who ripped some of my design work to use for a client...even put it on their website. That was baffling to say the least.

I've got no respect for pro artists who trace other people's work but make cosmetic changes. Two examples being Greg Land and Rob Leifield.

Wait. You'd have respect for Liefield without the tracing? ;)

Wow! Indeed i found this (http://www.tomsgames.com/us/2007/04/19/boxing_comics/) by googling! Sucky!

Thats not the first time i hear sarcasm about Rob leifield in C.A even in offtopic threads and i always wondered what it was about.
When u guys said he was abit of a tracer, i thought it was all but:

Wait. You'd have respect for Liefield without the tracing?

makes me think there's something else 'bout him...

What is it??

Oh, nothing a quick jaunt down to google won't tell ya (http://progressiveboink.com/archive/robliefeld.html). My personal fav is the oft posted Capt America drawing (http://grotesqueanatomy.blogspot.com/2004/05/now-thats-grotesque-anatomy.html)...but only because people have gone so far with it (the rotating, bird's-eye view animated gif is awesome if you can find it).

Really, it's because a bunch of grown comic fans are pissed that they made Rob rich in the 90s, now that they look back and see what they bought. ;) I never knew the dude exsisted until I went to college, but my fiancee has plenty of Liefield stuff from his childhood.
