Hi Everyone!
Here's a little cutie Kei Acedera and I did recently. I know that some people might not be into this cute and cuddly stuff but I thought some might be interested in the animated gif. It's another piece for our new book coming out end of the month called "Water Worlds."
Painted in Photoshop. Here's a link to another collaboration with Kei --> HERE (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=125188)
Hope you like it
Bobby

A really tight, well-done piece... and her expression is priceless!

I'm not quite buying the anatomy for the crab, but that's a VERY minor crit. Overall, love it!

A technical question. The different steps. Were those each done on a different layer?

Real Nice piece Bobby,
Exceptional rendering ability and color choices as always :) . You do "cute" and stylized characters and you do it "very well" ;) You pay attention to detail in a very effective way, just looking at the eyes, nose, hair and even the little bubbles. Providing a very equally balanced and easy to read image.
One very minor nit pick: The color of the skin and the objects ie; coral, star fish, mermaid don't feel like they are underwater. There isn't much "water atmosphere" and the lighting feels like above water, instead of below waves with the light shining through (broken up). Although I know that was most likely a personal choice, I just think a bit more floating particles and some haze here and there might work to the advantage of the image. (Just personal Opinion)

You rules.
The background lacks a bit of details, but it's really great

ScaryPotato/Micaiah Nelson/anjin - Thanks so much you guys!

CCThrom - hehehe... yes it's cartoony anatomy but that's what makes it fun hehe

Nathan Long - yes they were all different layers.

el coro - It was wonderful to meet you my friend! Thank you for your kind hospitality! I had your drawing framed and hanging in our studio. If you're ever in Toronto, you'll have to let us take you out for dinner.

chuck18mp/sabin boykinov/SEVANS/m@. - Thanks so much guys!

Mike Corriero - Thanks so much for the very constructive crits! I agree with everything you said. It was more of a personal choice

Rares Halmagean/Spookybabydoll - thanks for the crits!

That is some awesome form control

i saw the other thread too and both are great
and is so cute , very nice control on the lighting and
rendering lots of nice subtle soft edges.

good choice on extending the coral to the bottom,
the "X" arrangement of the mermaid and coral works great
i like seeing cute artwork of this quality around here

again the color choices are great . . . . and it looks so volumetric , love it :-)

looking forward to more posts :-D

Oop, you misunderstood my comment Digi, which is no surprise since I didn't take the time to explain myself... sorry, my bad.

I don't mean that the crab should look like a real crab, this is clearly not THAT sort of illustration. What I mean is that the crab should be plausible. The mermaid, the coral, the starfish... they are all completely believable even though they are cartoony. No matter what they look like, I'm convinced of their reality, which is the hallmark of good illustration.

But now Mr Crab... as much as I want to believe him, every time I look at him, the first thing that pops into my head is, "What the heck are those claws attached to? They can't work like that..." Right now, the claw-arms remind me a little of balloon animals floating in front of him, rather than real arms sticking out of a real (though cartoony) animal. It just brings my "suspension of disbelief" down a notch.

My suggestion would be to have some indication of mechanically feasible "shoulder" jointing, or at least a solid indication that the claw-arms potrude out from under his shell. Or maybe to just ignore it on this one ;P since 4.9 still equals 5 stars from me.

Keep up the great work, it's a breath of fresh air in these boards!
