*shrug* for lack of a better title...
I've never really drawn much before, most of my work consisted of illustrative vector work and such. No, I don't match up to some of the talent here, but I hope to grow and learn even more.
The first work is my 5th realistic portrait, it's good practice for me while I'm learning (sorry the quality is crud, my scanner isn't exactly cooperating). The digital work is a quick sketch of something I thought up just now, like to draw things down before I forget them. :)
Oh yes, and Hello everyone! This is my first post here :D

Hahahaha :P
It's a bit illustrative than what I usually do, I'll pay attention to the head more when I move on to a more finalized sketch. Spoon girl happens to be Amelie from the self-titled French movie. I'm usually tied for references so I look up things.

Amelie Poulain!!!! :teeth: and is the girl in the second sketch playing on a DS? win.
on the second one I can;t quite read the lower part of the body; is she sitting on a bed? or is that a dress? it def needs refining... second off she looks like she is gazing somewhere *under* the DS, and the arms lack shape, and I'm pretty sure they attach further back on the torso...
show us more work! and maybe a finalized sketch or two? i'd like to see how you clean up :)

I couldn't make my mind up with the second part of the body, but I will definitely fix those things you pointed out :)
Here are some more sketches (in the order I drew them), the last one's foot is a bit wonky. It was turned at a strange angle, next time I'll map it out better. I've never sketched much before, so still I'm still nub.

I drew some 5 minute quick sketches, I was just sort of working on getting the gesture down. I'm glad I was able to do at least ten of them tonight.

Today I did one 25 minute sketch, and a bunch of 2-5 minute ones. After the last body sketch, I decided that I should do some hand studies because quite frankly, I suck at hands. I followed some other things too, what's hard for me is to simplify the hand into shapes. I think I did alright, maybe another round of hands tomorrow will help more.

I promised myself I'd work on some more hands, and I'm glad I was able to do some quick hand studies. :mittenbop:
Only 2 comments on my sketchbook :( Oh well, I will keep on moving...

For somebody who says they haven't drawn much I think these are quite good. Especially the hands. Hands are very hard to draw but you did a very good job drawing them convincingly. I notice it says you live in Texas in the corner. If you're in the Austin area there's life drawing twice a week at the AVAA. (http://www.avaaonline.org/) Pretty good deal, $5, 3 hour session. Good atmosphere.
Keep it up!

Wow, that is quite a deal, I will look into that! :)
I've been involved in art, but in many different ways. I've never sat down to learn the basics though, and now I'm making up for that. Hands are very hard to draw, for me anyways, but somehow I don't like things "defeating" me. Even though they're not perfect, I was able to draw some hands and be ok with them.

I'm working on faces from stock photo references today. I thought she was cool looking so I did her portrait. More to come! :)
This is a WIP

Added another face. The one on the right, her hair was weird it was tied back and sort of flat. I dunno a very strange shape since it wasn't as full. Oh well, I'll tweak it until I'm happy :) WIP on the right.

It is cool that you are willing to go back and fix a piece, not many are willing to do that.
The faces are nice, they could use some more value.
Good sketchbook sofar.

Thanks for commenting! :) Yes, I like to go back and correct things that bother me. If I'm going to upload it anywhere I should show some progress.
Yes, tomorrow will be my full sketch day and I will try my best to incorporate better values in my work. Since I'm working with graphite, I don't have the feel of it quite yet. At least not like I do with charcoals. Thanks again :D

Keep it up

Oh, I've fallen in love with your drawings!
I like how confident your strokes are, many beginners (including myself) tend to ake a billion lines on top of each other to show a line... yours is that of a professional. In some of them it looks like the arms are too long, so you should practice propotions a little bit more, but other than that... not much.
My favorite piece is the second one in your first post. <3
Keep it up, can't wait to see more.

woodbert: Thanks, I've been elongating things more ha XD
Monkeydominator: Aww thanks a lot, that means a bunch considering I'm a nub lol. I'm just getting the hang of this sketching thing, trying to think of my own way to get these down as accurately and quickly as I can. I'll be practicing more though.
KidApe: I got the photo from the stock section on deviantart. It's a great place to practice with royalty-free photos. I don't like practicing from regular photographs since I do like to post my sketches up. Hopefully, I might be able to come those sessions sound great.
Sorry for the lack of updates, it's been a busy few days. I have been working on some sketches/studies which I will scan soon.
Here is what I'm working on today for a contest. :)

^ Yes, yes it is! I'm still not finished with it yet, but I will share some updates when I work on the portrait some more.
Hopefully I might manage to enter CHOW, I just started sketching. I didn't have any real references for this besides some archery poses. If anyone can give me some feedback, I'd appreciate it. :)

Very good start. Keep sketching! Keep an eye on the proportions in your latest sketch, something is afoot in the head-to-butt ratio! It's an interesting pose, but I think it would be a better presentation if it were just viewed from the front as opposed to the current pose... maybe kneeling on 1 knee too, as it's really pretty hard to stay on your toes (especially in heels though I have no personal account of this haha). It looks like you've blocked in her left knee to be on the ground, try and emphasize the weight and posture a bit more!
:]
Cool.

Don't post four times one picture! In the last one the fair is well formed on the head but the position of the jaw is unhuman... I think you need to go further in learning anatomy!

I didn't post four times o_o I posted the same pic twice in two different threads since some people might be able to help me more in the critique area.
Anyways, I am currently working on a new sketch with the pose in the front view. That one was pretty bad I admit XD I'm fixing it, slowly but surely :)

i'm digging the mohawk girl most. nice start, my only advice is to watch the face symmetry (faces are not exactly symmetrical, but eyes are almost always in the same line) and to add some length to your girls' torsos

You have some excellent progress in here. One of the things I would recommend to you is to do studies of body parts individually. Do pages of feet, pages of legs, pages of lower arms, pages of upper arms, etc. You get the picture. And do them all from reference so you can really study and memorize what the body parts all look like and how the muscle moves under the skin and you'll be able to draw back on that when sketching from memory. Keep em coming. :D
