Topic: Deep Sea Technology
For this grand joined activities challenge you are asked to explore the imaginary world of the deep seas. The topic is specifically designed to keep the results as broad as possibly, as the focus of this challenge is for you to come up with a wide variety of ideas and concepts.
In this special round of IDW it is your task to fill out the world of the Undersea Utopia with all kinds of things that relate to Industrial Design. This may be technology like transport for the inhabitants, but also sunken ships or exploration vehicles from the surface or props like sunken containers on the bottom of the ocean…basically, anything that can be called technology, props, or items, in one form or another.
Instead of the normal one entry per person, this time we want to see a variety of work. In the end, you will be judged on the body of work and not just on how well the final rendering of your design looks. Ideas and concepts are what this round is about. The amount of work invested in each idea or concept is up to you; 5 developed concepts with sketches to back them up, 100 thumbnails categorized on different subjects, go wild. In the end, bundle it into one image/submission and post it in the Final Burning Thread that will be put up a little later (yes, a first for IDW). Craftsmanship and presentation are important. Even though you will be judged on the ideas, you should still do a great job!
The results will be judged by both a public poll and a judging panel, as there are going to be awesome prizes for the winners!
Brief:
1. Sketch, draw, design and doodle anything that comes to mind for the topic DEEP: Undersea Utopia in terms of stuff; Vehicles, breathing gear, submarines, sunken containers etc.
2. This time, focus on generating and presenting your ideas. While one sketch can sometimes be a hit, usually you'll need to work initial ideas out a bit further to come to more finalised concept. For this challenge, both are fine. You will be judged on the whole body of work, not the final render of a concept alone.
3. Go wild...
Deadline: June 30 - 11:59pm

Hi, I'm pretty new to the forums. Where do I need to post my drawings for this competition?

Sounds like a great idea to all the activities going at something together. Hope I can produce something to do it justice.
eStudios - work in progess shots should likely go in this thread and then there'll be a 'Final Burning' thread (not in existance yet) for then finished pieces. Doesn't normally happen like that for IDW but if you look at the other activities they work that way. It's usually best if you keep a single main post to post all your progress works into so everything stays ordered.
PS - and welcome onboard...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Basic idea sketches - thinking about settings and themes...
(i) big sub and undersea installations (maybe a bit towards EOW)
(ii) manganese nodule harvester & hot vent facility...
Update 06/05/08 - new sketches
(iii) Black-smoker extraction mining rigs sketches
(iv) Black-smoker extraction rigs detail

eStudios: D-Holme is right: post any work in progress shot/images in this thread so people can react or comment on it. The final submission (all images you want to put in there gathered into on image and one post) can be put into the Final Burning thread which will be posted later on. Have fun :)

Cool , deep sea tech :-D
a simple graphic or logo, like those military arrow ranks
that we can include on the designs, can help a little
to bring it all together as a whole undersea society, or military,
you know the rebels , the empire . . . etc etc
even if we all make different stuff. :ilaekae:

Basically these capsules are floating
outside the undersea city, if somebody
runs out of oxygen they swim and enter underneath
and works like a little cave with a long supply of air
The shark shape kite thingy is to keep other fishes from getting near.

DEEP Undersea Mecha, the back fin attachment
is used for more storage and be able to travel
outside the city from district to district,
this model is used for maintenance, like the
other ones can be upgraded using a different back fin
with more arms instead of storage space
Also an A.I. specimen can perform most task by itself
but can be remotely controlled for special
repairs that require human judgement

So this guy, incapacitates the undersea Mechs
basically he/she goes and stabs the machines
giving them an electroshock, disabling them,
i dont think they will be trashed or explode . ..
anyway
He has batteries in her/his waist, each one
in a different voltage or frequency, so she/him
can switch depending on the type and size of the mech target
. . . . any questions regarding electricity and water ?

This suit is used by pilots,
it has a limited protection for high pressure

helmet is full of displays and sonar,
most of navigation tools

So what if you are running out of oxygen
and are far from a safe capsule or the undersea city
well you call this rescue fishes,
using a sound distress signal
a group of fishes will come carrying
a shell full of air with a straw, pull the tube
to break the seal and release the air
just be sure to give them a treat after they save your life :-)
and take the harness off the fish too.

This guys are part of the maintenance fleet
(shown here without their helmets)
for underwater city, they would get hooked
by one line that carries electricity and oxygen
then connect the tools to their body armour
and start working, welding and sealing leaks of air

Robogabo: I misunderstood that the first time I read it, but the idea behind this collaboration of weekly activities is that people create their own world by doing multiple or all activities. Doing one is fine too. What we don't want is to force people into a setting where they have to work with two factions evil and good or anything. That is totally up to the individual to fill his/her world with. If there is people wanting to use ideas off of others, I guess its fine as long as the other agrees. However, keep in mind that the final entries will be judged on originality as well. Good to see you in here though :)

May 26th - Heres my first crack.. I dont really have the time to do heaps of thumbnails... however I am working at getting a style guide happening so all my designs flow across the forums.
The idea behind these ships is that they are designed based on exsiting sea creatures. This way they blend into their suroundings.

eStudios: Please keep all updates in one single post in this thtread. I expect the activities forums will be soon flooded with entries, if everyone used up ten posts to show every minor update this thing is going to blow up in our faces :P You can edit your first post by clicking the 'edit' button on the bottom right of the post (next to the 'quote' and 'thanks' buttons). Also, keep in mind that this contest is not about creating one single completely rendered artwork but more about the idea generation, your thoughts on your designs, variations and solutions you find to certain problems that you expect will occur in the Deep sea.

I have a question, though. I'm designing a deep-sea suit, so... if I pull it into pieces to show how it works, that goes here, right? And if there's a human in it, it goes into CHOW?

Deastwen: Yep, if you want to explain the workings of the suit and all IDW is the place to be. That said, there's nothing against posting the human + suit in here as well, only I think it's better to keep that in CHOW.

Naomi - looks like you're going for a good original take the Deep concept. Early stages but at the moment the aquatic element isn't that clear. Looking forward to seeing it come together.
PaTXiNaKi - good start, you're going for a military fleet or similar? I think that with designs like this the trick might be showing that a craft is designed for going beneath the waves rather than being any plane or spacecraft.

One huge say.. 2000x1500 image with all my sketches and renderings; OR maybe 5 1000x800 (just random sizes) images with different vehicles on each? Or is it all pretty open and free regarding the layouts and quantity?

dsg: The overall layout, quantity and presentation is mostly up to you. However, for the final entry in the Final Burning thread (which I'll put up soon) there will be a few guidelines: 1 post per entrant, no limit to image sizes other than the size limit that the server allows, and a maximum of 5 uploaded images per post. Scrolling sideways should be avoided. We might request people to add a thumbnail to their post for in the poll itself as well, it'll save us some work :)

It would be my first IDW so Im not 100% familiar with the rules on what industrial design is in this weekly (I _do_ know what industrial design is professionally, since I study it, but somehow I think you're not after door-knobs and designed casings for miniature engines and so forth).

tools, stuff for daily life. Air compresor should your inhabitants need air preathers. Harness for steeds, personal flotation devices. mechanical communcation methods, harvest machinery, musical instruments. how about a calliope..... how would you hear it underwater?
water purifiers. something as simplas a a dinner plate... how do you keep the food from floating away?
current driven water mills, for power generation
thermal catchers. for warmth ans light. personal lighting devices. etc etc etc. sacred vessels.

Here's some DEEP stuff from the past week. I would have been more productive but I had some kind of killer flu bug that zapped my strength (it wasn't that dramatic... but there was a lot of snot). I won't go into all the boring details here, but I've thought up a story based around deep sea fishermen who hunt endangered, giant squid-like creatures for their precious, precious ink. So this first batch of thumbnails is for the vehicles these guys use to catch the squidies (which are many times the size of the craft, of course). With the two more finished designs I have a rough idea of how they work but will flesh out the one I decide to go with even further to show how various bits work (the blue craft has detachable 'lure' pods that are can be piloted separately to ensnare the creatures' tentacles, for instance). I want to take one more of the thumbnails to this level of detail and then, like I say, finish the chosen design up all proper, like.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/oishiiniku/drillerwip1.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/oishiiniku/milker1wip.jpg
I want to cover a number of ID pieces ('dry' suits for the ocean dwelling civilization to use out of water, the machinery that the 'ink' is put to use in, vehicles used by ocean dwellers etc.) and also to do a bunch of character stuff (which I've just started on) and maybe an environment or two,as well. There's also the matter of the squid-thing itself but I might just hint at that in silhouette. I guess I'll just see what I can do in the time I've got.
EDIT June 18th
Not had a great deal of time for this in the past week but here's another bit of industrial design. The idea with this piece is that the underwater natives use vehicles (Dry Suits) like this to travel around colonised human (aka, dry) areas. There are propellers in the feet but they're not very visible.

robogabo: that means a hell of a lot coming from an artist of your calibre. I just checked out your most recent updates on page 1 - awesome stuff. I really like the oxygen refuge contraption and that deep sea mecha is great, too.
imworlds: Yeah, I do use 3d in mocking these up, which I know will probably count against me when it comes to judging, but I just see it as a tool like any other that concept artists are getting great results from (moreover though, my perspective drawing is terrible).

I've spent the last couple of days concepting out an idea for a submersible vehicle with amphibious capabilities. I imagine that an underwater society would have need of a vehicle that can transport workers through the water, and then also allow them to crawl into deep caverns, wrecks, and into larger vessels (to allow for repairs). This vehicle may also be outfitted with weaponry (although that wasn't the original intent)
There is a lot more I'd like to do with this, such as add more to the cockpit, add tools and equipment along the flanks, add fine-control robotic arms for salvage and specimen retrieval, and so on...
Here's what I have for now, some thumbs to a few rendered pieces, as well as some paint alternatives:

Here are some other paint schemes I tried out, just for fun. Now on to something new...

Hey there, imworlds!
I'm diggin your frog-inspired machine. I really like the leg joints and the steps up to the hatch are a nice touch. I'm actually thumbnailing something a bit similar myself at the moment - it's kind of a mech suit for the underwater natives to use in the dry human colonies etc. - but hopefully it won't turn out too close to yours.
Looking forward to seeing more.
robogabo: Great stuff! I really like the updates for June 10th and 11th. There's a great moodiness in that most recent pic. I'd better get back to the grindstone!

imworlds: Sweet images, great detail. When you did that colors for the painted images, what was your process?
JimHatama: veeeeeeery cool. I love it. The image really conveys a great sense of depth. Only thing is, is it just a ship or is it more?
oishiiniku: wow, I just caught your models, very cool work. You can do so much with these for other parts of the competition. Can't wait to see more.
Here are 2 of my ideas. A crab dozer, a domesticated Giant Crab that has been outfitted with Large Shovels and scoops to help the humans dig. And also a Child's vest to help them keep up with their stronger swimming parents. These are only WIps, but please Critique till the oysters come home.

corspufo: I found Kemp's series of tutorials (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=127464) to be really useful, and used many of his techniques and tools to concept this out.
I brought my line work into Photoshop, and used layers, simple brushes, and a few photos of textures to lay in and composite into the image. I avoided using a lot of lighting, rather going for a simpler paint scheme, because I wanted the design to stand out clearly, rather than being obscured by too much rendering (thinking of this as more of a model sheet than a completely painted illustration).

well this is just a design of a capsule i did for my EOW..im trying to do a little bit of everything and this is one of the industrial part of my environment. just a breeding capsule. wanted to put it here for critiques and comments. hope u like. again this is for my environment not this area. thanks!

I love the look and feel of that Cheo. Very industrial and uninviting to be born it. Very cool. The ONLY thing I would comment on, and this is minor, but since the apparatus is very mechanical and not so organic, defined shapes like the circles, should be perfect. The circular gears should be perfect crisp and clean. Just my opinion. Good work.
Updated my Crab Dozer last night. Take a look up!

Iv been really wanting to design a sub on an insect (air going)...so here are some quick thumbs to start me off...Im deffinately swinging towards the doctor octopus design...a sub with legs like the squidies out of matrix will be v cool, not to mention useful on the sea floor :)

never really done this before so its all a bit new to me!
Imworlds im loving that frog design, Please tell me thats a 3d render and not a tech drawing!? :P

jread: I wish I could say that my draftsmanship is tight enough to produce line work just like that, but I used Sketchup--modeling from my imported thumbnail-- for this particular project. I love Sketchup because not only can I produce schematics and multiple renders quickly from one design, but I also get a sense of when a gear or volume or mechanic won't work correctly, because I'm having to prototype it in a three dimensional space. The actual painting I did in Photoshop from the line work.
I like your thumbs a lot, by the way. I'd like to see the octopus design taken further, but I also like the silhouette of the grasshopper...keep it coming!

cool thanks imworlds, Im most likely gonna advance (or combine) the dragonfly with the octopus...but could take some ideas from the grasshopper! :)
so you use sketchup for that? I have used it for simple building shapes etc but wouldnt think of using it for something that complex...how long did it take? and how long have you been using sketchup? I might look for some decent tutorials to aid me in my submarine quest! I find getting the right angles and stuff a nightmare in it... :S

jread: once I had the design completely figured out (which I do only in thumbnails and/or on pencil and paper, because I find that the modeling process can go into too many directions unless the design is fairly understood and solidified to begin with), the actual modeling for this specific project took me about eight hours (a simpler, less curved shape should probably go a lot faster).
I'm assuming that this is pretty slow compared with the guys who do this for a living, and I'm trying to get faster at this so that I can knock out more ideas in one day; keep in mind, I also save components, which are small repeated shapes and objects from earlier projects, and which can be repurposed. For instance, I save bolts, couplings, screws, levers, and the finger digits (which were created for an Iron Man Sketchup model that I did for practice last week). Use of components is a really powerful way to speed up your process.
I found these tutorials to contain everything you need to know to make a competent model: http://download.sketchup.com/downloads/training/tutorials50/Sketchup%20Video%20Tutorials.html
I also really recommend Kemp's vehicle tutorial because he goes into all the iterative steps and important research that goes into vehicle concepting (stuff that I often overlook because I am so excited to start using the technology, without first considering strong foundational principles such as form and function, design, anatomy and rendering).
I'm blabbing here, but I hope this helps...!

My eutopia is set in sorta the "Bone Age" or "Shell Age" where there is no advanced technology, no fabricated metal, etc. So I have to go to the Flintstones School of Industrial Design.
Here is some of the stuff I am coming up with. It's a challenge making this stuff interesting.
My sketches from the character thread can be found here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1803320&postcount=351).

Coldrum, nice jellyfish ship, i'm coming up with a similar squidish design for one of my ships. it's just so damn hard not to get influenced by matrix/star wars ship design. :D

imworlds !!! that is one awesome mecha design i love it :yum:
the limb work is very good and has a nice weight to it
it is very exciting :-D , i would suggest doing some
more paint pattern exploration, like those frogs you got in your reference
your mecha is way cool , looking forward for more :-D

Dimagyan: You'll have to ask Chaos if she would accept them in EOW, but I won't keep them from the poll in here. They're explaining the technical workings of the city rather than give an style/design idea so I figure they fit here better. A more spectacular drawing of it all would enhance the presentation of the idea though (doesn't have to be anything super fancy, just a small detail or perspective view of a system. Sideviews tend to make the drawings a bit boring).
To ALL: Don't forget to post your final pieces in the Final Burning Thread! Still a week or so to go, but that is over before you know it :) Not posted in the Final Burning thread means not taken to poll!

Hi everyone, had to join in this very cool topic. Sorry no previous posting, I was busy moving to my new job. Anyway... here are my sketches.
Some breathing helmets
http://ivanmoy.com/images/thumbs_breathingHelmet_sketch.jpg
remote operated drones. Crab and squids inspired
http://ivanmoy.com/images/thumbs_drones_sketch.jpg
I figured we need some light thats not attached to our helmets or held like a flashlight.. some squid inspiration.
http://ivanmoy.com/images/thumbs_lamps_sketch.jpg
Bulk transport ships, I liken them to aquarium fish I've seen.
http://ivanmoy.com/images/thumbs_freightTransports_sketch.jpg
Thinking of heavy work or exploration suits. Standard thinking until I got into.. crabs again. No pun intended...
http://ivanmoy.com/images/thumbs_heavyUnderwaterSuit_sketch.jpg
Some speed racer units. I kinda ran out of time to finish these and the bulk transport ships.
http://ivanmoy.com/images/thumbs_racersTransport_sketch.jpg
And to top it off with some good ol guns. I figure I'd go with sonic based weapons since bullets and lasers aren't too effective underwater. Well, with my limited scientific knowledge anyway.
