These are the designs I've decided on for my DEEP creature. It's three creatures that make up one entity. I'm working on value and perspective as I move from paper and pencil to digital.

A quick update. I'm still moving things around and trying to make the scene more aquatic. I origionally wanted to go for some kind of deep-sea wyrm that lived in or around underwater vents. My thinking was that life develops in abundance within these warm nurtrient rich waters, but that the harsh conditions would produce some fearsome looking beasties. Although not traditionally utopian, the creature exists in a similar environment to which i envisage an underwater society. Perhaps it could be tamed to transport large loads due to its impressive size (sorta like the Dune worms, but... underwater).

Jaecks: Thanks, This font has been killing me, I dont have many to choose from, got to get around to downloading em.

I have spent a lot of time on the cover page, didnt use much but the air brush tool :)
Arteater: The cover page is really nice. I like the effect a lot. Have you thought about a different and perhaps smaller font? I think it might make the effect of the light more dramatic. Plus I just want to see more of the painting. :) It seems really simply and straightforwardly painted without a lot of special effects and wacky brushes, which makes me like it even more. The way the cyan gets more saturated as you pull back closer to the sunlight really works.

Throwin in some ideas for domesticated creatures.

Here are my sketches thus far. It not much I know, but I have an idea. The utopia is a society where a number of creatures live in a symbiose. There will be carnivores as well of course, but most of the creatures will be herbavores or creatures feeding exclusivly on algea. I am still working out the bits and it is kinda fun so far^^

Mischeviouslittleelf, these are some great designs, but i agee with Shydrow that the others concepts are perhaps a little too humanoid. However, these would be lapped up over at the CHOW deep challenge! Oh and Henes, i'm liking your giant barnicle creature!

Hey, there, fellow CoW buddies. There's some great stuff in here so far! I'm glad to see people pushing themselves.

I've done a few pages of sketches and a small number of digital paintings for DEEP, and since I just moved and am using someone else's computer for the time being, if I do anything else it'll likely just be more pencil sketches.

My digital paintings have revolved around a "jewel fish" concept. The concept is this: in the future DEEP Utopia world, not only do people enhance their appearance through jewelry, ornaments, and attractive clothing as they do in today's world, but they also enhance their appearance using living organisms. One type of creature used is the jewel fish. Jewel fish--which are actually many different species of fish-like organisms from several different worlds--are bred for their beauty and for ease of care. Purchased as eggs, they are trained from hatching to see their owners as their only source of food, so they follow their owners forevermore. DEEP-women being followed by personal schools of small, beautiful fish are not uncommon sights in the undersea utopia of the future.

The individual fish and concepts:

397488
The Backeye is among the larger and more powerful varieties of jewel fish. Owners of the Backeye must take special care that their other jewel fishes are compatible, for although all jewel fish are bred to be unaggressive, the ancestors of the Backeye were reef predators, and it is not unknown for Backeyes to occasionally eat smaller jewel fish. A peculiarity of the Backeye and its relatives is that its visual organs are near the rear of its body, hence the name.

397489
Originally bred for food, the Quat is slow and plump. Its body is heavy and its fins are small and weak, so it is very slow swimmer. Therefore, it is recommended for occasions where little movement is required, such as musical performances or dinner parties. A vocal and affectionate fish, it will often rest on or nuzzle its owners, and emits endearing grunting and purring noises. Nets and storage tanks are available for the easy transportation and containment of these slow, lovable jewel fish.

397490
The Discus Dragon comes in many striking colorations, including the Red Sunrise breed pictured here. These gregarious jewel fish get along well with each other or will other fish of similar size. Their thin, flat bodies are relatively rigid and inflexible, so most propulsion comes from the single caudoventral fin. A pair of pectoral fins just behind the head add stability.

397491
Here's the sketch I'm working off of. As you can see, I'm changing the designs somewhat as I paint them. It's really fun.

Pencil sketches will be added soon.

Character Name: Grand Serix
Type: Preditor (King of the Ocean)
4X vision
5th eye for natural sonar
Night Light (extension at the tip of mouth)- light up allowing for vision in the depths; or it can act as a lure of prey in the deep or to lost ships at sea seeking a light house for refuge.
Double fins allow the Serix to reach greater speeds and efficiently move it's massive body.

Natural Enemy: The Kraken

*note: A Grand Serix can eat a Whale Shark as easily as a great white can eat a snapper fish.*

Also, there is a thread in the COW Folder called Final Burning, this is where you post your final images. Unfortunately it's not up yet.....actually, FOZ is there going to be a Final Burning thread?

Moai: love your designs, love the colors, keep'em coming.

I've got a couple more that I worked up the other night. There is still a color round coming, but wanted to throw these out there while I got em. Let me know what you think. Also, I'm still struggling with their names, any ideas?

:O Lots of cool creatures here.
Here is my cows... The photo didn't end up that good, might retake it.
http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p97/DkJunior/DEEP_flashrabbit_cow1.jpg

The seaducks are gentle creatures, often living in tight growth surroundings to escape predators.
unfortunately they have to travel great distance to get to their mating grounds.
And as they dash towards their love they often find themselves victims to the cruel reality.

"Red stripe" is a fast predator living at around depths of 2000-5000ft.
It's called Red stripe because that's all you see before the end.
Favorite snack is the slow seaducks, easy targets for someone as fast as Red.

The "Kranion Quagga" often called skull fish is a striped fish with a protective bone skull.
It's a omnivore but mostly eats plants and such.
When disturbed it sometimes becomes aggressive and smash into the target with it's hard skull.

"Aurelia calor" is a glowing jellyfish of the Aurelia family.

The "Lum's" main energy source is the sun, thats why it's often found close to the surface.
It is collected for the use as a practical way of brighten up the parts of the city where the light doesn't
reach.

"Ophid caecus", a hardskinned creature that has no eyes. It uses high-pitched sounds to find the way.
At 25000-? ft down it has no need for eyes or much color. It can reach speeds of 70km/h.
It has no known natural predators because of it's size.

The Reef Squid with its pale skin is a known delicacy. With a fin on top of the head it's a hard catch,
not knowing which way it's going to escape it can be quite tricky.

"Quadratum Octopus" a common creature of the seas. One of the food sources for the Ophid caecus.
It's a freindly little creature which isn't afraid when you swim up to it (or it could just be dumb, who knows).

The Nose Bass known for it's square shaped nose. Also one of the common creatures around here.

"Adactyl" has a long snout and tongue which it uses to eat various kinds of tiny creatures that
lives in and around the corals.

The Toy fish, a small yellow fish that looks like a toy. It has a fin that looks like a propeller and
using bioluminescence it blinks on and off with it's tiny antenna.

CorspufoGettin' real good my friend. Leviathus Rex is definitely the king. Good question by the way.
I actually have one of my own Foz, and I'll probably look pretty dumb for asking because I don't read enough, but are we required to participate in all the areas in order to be considered?

Here's what I managed to get done... a few scribbles in my sketchbook and a speedpaint... not nearly as much as I was hoping for.... I got a little too busy. I wont be posting in the finished section but it was fun being underwater for a while : D

The Island Giant

These slow moving giants follow the warmer climates around the globe. They live for hundreds of years and can measure in kilometres. The shells of these creatures have layered slates which happen to be perfect foundations to build on for our DEEP inhabitants. Large Guard fish are always near and feed from the giants belly. In turn, they protect the beast and its tenants.

You can add your images later on to your initial post as long as it happens before the deadline. And i don't care about names or whatever on the image itself. At the end we see the artists name in the post.

The work here is looking very awesome ^_^

Sadly, I have to bow out. My husband was sick for a few days, so I was tending to him and didn't have time to work on any of my projects. I'm not adept enough at Painter X yet to finish my creatures in less than ten days, and I don't want to submit anything half-assed.

I'm still moving forward with all of my ideas for DEEP, I'll just be posting them in my sketchbook rather than in the final thread for the contest.

Good luck everyone, all of the work here is very inspiring! Happy drawing!
