"painter photoref study messed with"

October 13th, 2003, 04:21 PM
the "old masters" got the way they did because they drew from their daily lives. A woman churning butter might now be a woman talking on her cellphone waiting for a bus.. If you use the talent you have to capture what you see every day I think it would be interesting

Dan.v.D.

thx for the comment but for now i wanna learn and masters make for great teachers.

now 2 studies. nothing special but i haven´t done such things before.

hi Dan!

i remember that one too. i liked your scetch of it a bit more, but that might be because it isn't finished yet.
i like your scetchbook! their are a lot of usefull training-studies in it. i'll try that lightning-thing with only 3 values, too. good idea to get a basic understanding of lights and shadows!

keep it up! :chug:

i´m not pleased with the outcome given how long i worked especially on the second one.

Dan.v.D.
November 13th, 2003, 03:00 AM
haha nope but ever since i´ve read...

"While growing up on Long Island, I guess I was
around ten or eleven years old, my cousin Ellie
and her husband Frank would often visit us to
enjoy the pool and a fun backyard barbecue.
They would bring their children for us to play
with while they lounged. The one thing that
caught my eye was Uncle Frank, as I called
him, reclining with a large pad on his lap
drawing away, always while chatting with the
other adults. I would find myself frequently
looking over his shoulder only to find that
what he was drawing with no reference was,
Al Capp’s syndicated newspaper
column, ”Little Abner.” Little did I know the
influence he would have in my life in less
than a decade. To this I say, ”Thanks for
being there Frank Frazetta.” "

...a short bio of ken kelly (http://www.kenkellyart.com/) i can´t help but think of "uncle frank"

Hi Dan, very good Update my friend!
Your knowledge of anatomy is getting better and better. The face on the first page and bs004 are the best of them. Be careful with your proportions (length of the arms etc,) and the balance between the left and the right side of the body.

On with the show!

Ok you prolly heared that like 100000 times so here's some crit.

But i really really do dig mister skull  Do you play Thief? Looks like hahaha

March 23rd, 2005, 10:18 AM
thx guys i really appreciate your feedback!

robby: hmm i honestly don´t know where to take that dood.jpg
i mean i could finish it but i´m kinda considering it just a study.
the problem is that i had nothing particularly in mind when i started it,
so there is no real idea or concept behind it and trying to make something
out of it now is like the same amount of work that it is to start something new.

karim: thx. i´m happy that someone sees some progress. that´s why i had a longer break inbetween posts.
i want to make every post better than the last instead of posting tons of shit.
it´s challenging for me and interesting/inspiring for others i hope.
btw do you still draw at all? i wanna see something!
and yeah i played thief recently and loved it but never never
thought of a connection between the image and that game myself haha.

Main Crit: POST MORE!!!

JokingClown
April 24th, 2005, 12:49 PM
You are much better than I am, at least at figure studies. I need to work on that. Sense I know nothing about muscles I cant critique your muscle placement etc. But I always try to critque something, especially if the persons work is better then mine.

Try to do some studies of the hand. Scroll up through every picture of yours, and you can see that you have avoided drawing the hand.

I presonally would love to see a few peices that are finished. And some more enviroment peices. Mainly because Im partial to them.

Biggest thing is the hands though.

Karim M.
April 24th, 2005, 01:15 PM
hahaha so you're a guy ritchie fan are you?
I like the way you play round with perspective in some pieces. Nice!

Hi Dan,

Sweet SB you've got here. A lot of cool pics. This: http://www.vilestyle.com/ca/brom002.jpg , being my favourite of the bunch. The silhouette is well done, and all the delicate lines beef it up even more.

I like your color choices in the gladiator dude. Reds and blues are used well. If I can toss a crit, it would be on that same dude, particularly the outline of some parts of his body. Like the thighs, they seemed to have been trimmed off almost, making them look flat. Try adding some back light to the edge, if just a little. Im sure it would improve it.

Had fun browsing through your SB. Keep filling it up!

hey guys! i´m just posting my td entry and some cd artworks i did between early '02 and mid '04 to have an opportunity to thank you for your replys!

aesir, LadyLioness, mos667 and Sunny: i´m happy to hear that you see progress. at times it's soooo tempting to start a new sketchbook to get rid of some of the old crap, but then again it makes me appreciate your comments more because i know you had to wade through quite a lot of crap to finally see the newer and better things haha.

Richorb: lol i had to look up "mogg flukies" at google. to me it´s just brom haha.

p4b10: it seems the luck was rather on your side this time. good job!

grisalisan: yeah i'm kinda happy with how that guy turned out given that he has taken much less time than most of my other pieces.

August 8th, 2005, 09:57 AM
Nice work, and improving, too!

I think you have an occasional tendency of making the upper arm too short, and the lower arm by comparison too long.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v413/mentler/profront.jpg

http://www.tsofa.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25

The elbow generally fits below the rib cage but above the pelvis. On some of your drawings the elbow (if the arm were dropped to anatomical position) would fall too far above the points at the bottom of the rib cage.

The upper arm (humerus) is about 2 head widths (not lengths, widths) -- the forearm from elbow to wrist is about 80% of that

Dan.v.D.
August 9th, 2005, 04:46 PM
damn 3 masters in a row!

thank ya'll very much!

jfrancis: you are totally right. but while that stuff seems soo simple in theory, i usually fuck up trying to get shape and proportion right. if you now what i mean. if i look for proportion too much i loose the feeling for the right form, and vice versa. i'm sooo far from "driving all horses at once" or how hale said so well that i could start crying any time of the day haha.
btw your stuff rocks.

wow... i mean...wow!
great improvement, especially on the rendering. but you seem to hate hands and feet (who does not?!?). i suggest to do a lot of them, as i think it's very important for the overall composition. cloaks and mist is a good thing sometimes...
but that frazetta figure... wonderfull!
hope to meet you soon, maybe in remscheid!

Your color pieces look very good and have a lot of potential. I guess that you are a Frank Frazetta and Brom fan, too. It´s cool that you are not afraid to make lots of studies.

Just one crit: Why don´t you try out different body-styles? You know: old, thin, and of course the steroid types :)

Dan.v.D.
October 12th, 2005, 03:47 PM
thank you very much guys. yeah i like studies cuz trying harder makes them better. there´s not much more to it than dedication whereas own works confront you with obstacles without a walkthrough at hand. if that makes any sense... + you can pick up a thing or two while doing studies...
ok and because i´m dan.v.d and i suck heres another unfinished bald mofo without hands and stuff. i´m still trying to find "my" body style and figure out that anatomy biz, so he´s kinda muscled again. but you're of course totally right with your remark johnny78.

hey dan, like john mentioned before i think too you should now focus on the composition, the enviroment or dynamic poses instead of details which you obviously studied. but anyway its very nice to see your improvement just in these two pages! keep on challenging yourself and youre on the best way.

December 19th, 2005, 05:25 PM
there is a serious improvement through your book, the characters have a real sense of expression and life although they do not seem to have much dynamism, the last piece is great, love th colour choices and the pose is fantastic, minor thing with position of the sword, it doesn't really carry the line of viewing very well, did a little over paint to show ya what I mean hope ya don't mind.

the last post is super nice--keep up the great work. and the mexican (??just a guess??) general from oct. 1 that you didn't like is really pretty nice, imo; though i think the sky doesn't look realistic and kind of detracts. maybe something in a less bright-cyan kind of look.

it seems like your pieces now (vs. some of the paints from page one) incorporate colors / lighting tones from the background moreso than before. is good because it tends to put your figures into place in their environment.

keep up the great work! can't wait to see more.

Cool images. I don't see any errors. I especially like the sky in the second one.

Nice work with your coloring and composition. You should considering looking at the more basic skeletal form and how the muscles interact with it. Look at capturing the flow of the body and not just specific muscle groups. Keep it up!

Good progress here. Great Frazetta and Brom studies. Those guys are two of my biggest idols

You need to post a bit more often than every 6 months...

Hey bub, thanks for the complement and the crit on my thread.

I've checked out your stuff and dig it a lot. I always respect somebody who puts the time in and makes the strong effort. Some of your comps are sweet.

But just like you opened my eyes a bit with your crit I'm going to do the same for you.

I have one simple task for you...

Do your Bridgman now.

Huh?

George Bridgman. The best anatomist for artists ever. Period. Didn't just give you the anatomy, gave you the form, where it corners, how to think so you can do lighting out of your head and make all your figs solid as rocks.

Gotta stop looking at Frazetta a bit and realize that Frazetta once did his Bridgman too. Just like Norman Rockwell, a thousand other top guys, and humble ol' me too! Go to Frazetta's site and you can see some of the copies he made in his notebook in a section called rare art.

Georgre Bridgman. Constructive Anatomy. Book of 100 Hands. Life Drawing. The Human Machine.

What does it mean to "Do your Bridgman"?

It means to copy into your notebooks, line for f'in line, his entire books.

Its a bitch, but if you do it, you will love yourself for it. Trust me. Trust Frazetta. Trust Rockwell. Trust everybody who you admire for their drawing chops who has done their Bridgman. There's a whole bunch of them out there.

You want to unlock your talent? Go!

Best,
kev

why is stuff sooooo goddamn hard.
i'm struggeling and struggeling without the slightest feeling of accomplishment. the best part is the feeling of embarresment. i seriously haven't even shown my parents or anybody anything in years haha.
i only tell pll that i will make it somehow, someday. go figure how much faith im me is left :P
the only payoff of all that are your kind replies
