I've been having painter X crash the last week or so *very* commonly when I try and open a file. Not any file in particular, but I typically open up the "open file" window, click to desktop and as I'm searching for my file it just poofs. Luckily I haven't really lost anything, but it's incredibly annoying and seems to be happening more frequently.
Any answers or similar experiences out there?

I haven't had your problem nor has anyone I know, so I'll just make a couple of small (and pretty stupid) suggestions and pretend to be helpful:
-Update Painter to X.1 if you haven't.
-If that doesn't solve the problem try uninstalling Painter fully using a software like Revo Uninstaller (a personal favorite, it's free) using the most in-depth settings as to get rid of all registry keys and such, then reinstalling it.
-If that doesn't work either... erm, try and install the latest updates for your OS, maybe they'll fix some strange little bug and solve your problem. /:-|

I have indeed experienced this before and it was repeatable at the time. This behavior occurs, for me at least, when working with files larger than 2000 x 3000 [~10 megapixel] and using > 1 layers. I've never had to tiptoe around a program so much as i do in this one.

To bring a fresh version of Painter up, you do not need to reinstall Painter. Just hold shift key when you boot. This puts a fresh version of Painter into your user files which is where Painter is run from. If you have any custom brushes, portfolios, etc, copy them into a back up folder first, or you'll loose them in the reset.

True, this does bring up a fresh Painter, and it would do if the problem is related to user settings, buggy brushes, or something of the sort. But it won't solve the problem if it's due to some registry-related mystical phenomenon. Have you ever had Painter not load up and tell you something along the lines of "your version of Painter has been illegally modified," for example? That doesn't get solved by anything except a full uninstall and removal of all traces of Painter from the registry and hard drive, a fresh reinstall with antivirus/firewall turned off, and finally a removal of all registry keys called "Protexis" (if I remember correctly) before launching the program.
Sorry I went on a rant there; just trying to make a point :P
