Just a 1 hour quickie before I go to class.

Liked the idea, but don't think I delivered on what I'd hoped for, may do more with it later.

Trying to keep it quick and readable. The bones could use more detailing. Should have made the wall higher than the horizon like looks kind of goofy.

Hour or so.

I took an hour, but started over 3 times. For some reason, I just can't get this one to work... I'm going to try a completely different picture.

Hey peeps, I went with grey-scale on this one. I'm hoping to finish it up in color for a final piece. Thanks for the great topics to charge the brain up with cool ideas. This one took me approx. an hour and a half. Crits welcome
(oh..and i did use a reference for the kiddies and experimented with M@'s brush set..i would have to say a pretty nice set of brushes :teeth:)

Ever danced with the devil by the pale moonlight?

c4l3b high contrast equals foreground, so turning it up globally does nothing for depth.
You can see where I have very obviously made my foreground high contrast warm colours so
the background is then heading towards muddy low contrast colors (not enough though).

Changed this up a little, listening to anthis's comments.

Changed the sky, tried to make the clouds look like a maze, not completely successful but I think the perspective works better than the first image, the values sit better with the rest of the picture. Thickened the walls. Lightened shadows on the ground so that the person's shadow is easier to see. I also tilted the horizon line to make it more dramatic, the verticals now lean towards the two people trapped in their little dark rectangle.

Hey guys. here is mine. Took me about an hour. I started to get frustrated the further I went. I think its because I was trying to get to bed. I am going to have to come back to this one and finish it. It's apparent where my attention span starts to grow thin. :P There is still a lot of work and refining to be done. Oh well. It's a good start for now.

I will return tomorrow to write some comments on everyone elses work, but for now I need to get some sleep before class tomorrow morning. Keep up the good work everyone!

scho81: Love it! The atmosphere is beautifully creepy.
blunderbus: I'm a tad confused by the perspective, but the detail and line quality on the bones is simply amazing! I'd love to see a bigger version.

Mine's just a quickie. Sleepy time soon... *yawn*

Some thoughts and crits, hope you don't mind.

Leprechaun; Pretty quick, and you seemed to have a very clear idea of what you were doing. I like the fortress in the middle, nice idea. I think a few perspective lines would have helped you out. Just pick your vanishing point and make the elements in your piece follow the perspective (i.e distant grass could be smaller). The little fellow with swords seems a bit too little. Think you delivered the idea pretty ok though.
erniesthings; You pointed out some mistakes yourself. I also think the bones furthest away could be a bit smaller to match perspective and depth. You sure got an eerie feel going on, your figure looks helpless.
c4l3b; Your view is quite demanding when it comes to depth, perhaps thats breaking you up. You want the walls to look like bone, but theres also the shadows, light, perspective, and mist. I like that your maze isn't in the middle of nowhere, and the little figures with their light.
scho81; Well the kids came out pretty good. Nice mood with the big, gloomy surroundings and the little children. The bridge-like structure in the air seems a bit randomly shaped. Also, the single light on the left is drawing my attention away. I like the torches up above though.
c4l3b; Nice progress shots ;P. Like the running motion too. Make sure the color gets less saturated far away. Also define your light source, light seems to be coming roughly from above but it doesn't always match. I can give you little advice on color, its a struggle for me too. In the black and white piece you had the girl really stand out though, she's sharper there.
blunderbus; Nice to see some traditional work ;) And welcome. Quite a lot of nice details too, some interesting shapes and out of the ordinary bones. I think some of the shape of your maze got lost in the details though. Especially the first 'pile' of bones has lost some of its depth. I like the gated entrance, but I'm not so sure about the two walls on the sides. Nice stuff, see you next time!
Mitze; I don't think the head is too bad, but placement on the neck/shoulders is perhaps a bit odd? I like your detail on the figures though (esp. the girl), plus you've got a great mood. I think you should clean up some of those sketchy lines though. Do you make a pencil sketch first? You could perhaps add some depth to the bones by adding some at the front, and pushing some in the far back. Right now they seem to stand more or less on the same plane.
EBrown; I like your walls. You can't see the details but you can notice it's made of a variation of bones. It looks both messy and structured. There's no real focal point in your piece yet though. Perhaps its because he's unfinished, but you've got an interesting figure in your maze. He looks somewhat 'evil', as if he has something to do with the maze.
ashton; Your figures are very nicely in contrast with the surroundings. Also nice to see a maze with difference in height, and stairs and such. On the other hand, it looks more like a ruin of some sort, rather than a bone maze.
c4l3b; Nice, that seems to be the entrance. Like the desert setting, with those 'flags' and the sand blown against the wall. The wall on the right side of the skull doesn't match the rest of the wall just to the left of the skull.
armando; There's a nice story in your piece, with the figures hiding behind the wall, and a light on the other side. Nice job on the lighting in general, you can clearly see the bone structure with a few strokes. I don't quite like your sky though, and perhaps those walls are a little thin. But that might be a matter of taste.
Titus James; Welcome! Don't worry, join more often and you'll get better. It's obviously not finished but I can see where you're going. Just try to get the shapes and overall color right before you put too much effort in those details. See you next time!
ExiledRed; Impressive detail. Loads of different bones in there, tooth, and they really look like walls. Those walls are nicely shaped, apart from the bottom part of the middle wall, it seems kinda flat. I like the rounded shapes of your walls too, really makes you think what created these.
Jenserai; Nice mood. Looks as if they are descending in some kind of bone-cave. Nice little skulls too. Not sure whether the figure in the back is crawling/climbing. Not sure how long this one took you, but I think you got a nice idea going on.

Managed to finish in 1.5hr.

Hope I'm doing this posting thing right. Doesn't look like a maze as intended, ended up looking like a bunch of stand-alone walls.

http://browntear.com/CA/DSGBoneWall.jpg

EDIT: Wanted to throw a revised one up before playing around with the next DSG. Worked on this a little more thanks to Titus James' comments. btw, Titus, really like that second sketch of yours, definitely dials in on "spooky" for me.
http://browntear.com/CA/DSGBoneWall2.jpg

Just some quick notes:
Anthis Awesome, love how the bones are bunched together forming their own shapes and how the archer seems to be slipping on some bones, similar to walking on those huge garbage heaps in landfills.
ExiledRed I've come across your work often as I lurk here. Like this one alot, all the detail and variation in the walls. Especially when I come across ones that look like a spinal cord or some poor guy's rib cage.
Mitze I can't help but notice the great rendering of the woman, really stands out.

the picture is a real quickie, but I wanted the earthy colour scheme and the torch. The charachter is climbing the bones. I'll maybe post a more refined sketch later. I hope this works ^^

DarkArtist- Great wall design

Anthis- Yours is my favorite, great job. I like the way the ranger is cautiously stepping through the maze as if in one small step wrong and he could be burried in bones.

ExiledRed-cool bones!

Mitze-like the lighting!

blunderbus- I envy your pen work, nice job. reminds me of some of the warhammer artwork.

scho81-I like the mood, I think you catched the spooky look perfectly

Leprechaun – I like what you were going for. I think there could have been a bit more contrast in your values. That may have helped you get what you were looking for.

Erniesthings – I think you were correct in thinking that the walls needed to be higher then your horizon line. I think it would have added a bit more “drama.” Good job though, I like the colors.

C4l3b – On your first work, I really like the people with the torch staring at the wall. That looks pretty sweet!

Scho81 – You definitely nailed this DSG! I really like your two kids at the bottom of the picture plane! They look awesome! And your contrast really helps this one!

C4l3b – on your 2nd one, I think the image with the higher contrast looks good. As I said above, I think it adds some drama to this DSG topic. Your color image was a nice attempt working outside of your comfort zone! Keep it up, I know how you feel. I’m not very good at color values either. (Refer to my first image in this DSG)

Blunderbus – Not ink work man! Nice clean lines!

Mitze – I really like your color palette in this image! You are definitely headed in the right direction with it!

EBrown – Nice job on your perspective! I like your wall designs.

Ashton – nice job on the colors, I am really liking the contrast between the moonlight and the torch lighting, those colors works well with each other.

C4l3b – On your 5th image, I think I like your previous one with the running girl the best. This image however would look nice with some higher contrast.

Armando – Your light source is working really well here. I think you did a really good job rendering it!

ExiledRed – Holy line work!

Jenserai – I really like how your figure looks like he/she is sneaking through the space, definitely works well with your lighting choice.

Anthis – Very nicely done! I like your color palette as well! Your walls design is also very cool!

Browntear – Even if it isn’t a mazy, you got your perspective down nicely.  Some shadows on the two figures would help with the “moody-ness” feel for the image, along with some darker values on the floor to help give it some depth.

DarkArtist – Sweet looking bone walls! That’s a mysterious looking character!

Concrete – I like how you rendered your figure. Reaching for hope or something! Cool looking.

lAhlbeck – welcome to the DSG! I like your color choice, I hope to see your refined sketch later!

PowerAnimal – I really like how you rendering the figures in your image. I like how the little girl is the only one in motion, as if she isn’t petrified with fear like the others, and is more curious at what’s going on.

Hamsta – Those are some big bones! Nice job!

Psychostrat – Good job on the atmosphere of your image, it’s working really well!

Here is my 2nd attempt at this DSG. I wasn't happy with my first one, so I decided to try again. So here it is! I think it's more successful (And it's actually finished!) :P

Anthis, yours is really good, my favourite this round.

Blunderbus, I love the inks, image is too confusing though.

Scho81, the fact that you chose children as the walking figures defines this image and makes it more dreamlike, excellent.

thanks to those who've critiqued this round too.

I really like this theme. You can take it in a lot of directions.

Anyway, here's my thing. I'm not really happy with the result, mostly due to the lack of contrast, but I don't feel like going back and fixing the problems right now. This was just pretty much practice to get myself accustomed with Corel Painter.

ExiledRed; Haha, thanks. I like the little story. What I found interesting about your walls is that they are actually quite smooth. Spiky, pointy walls was the first thing I thought of, but I like your fluent ones. They really seem 'crafted' by some person/creature. I like how the skeleton is sticking out of the 2nd panel, and nice job on the lighting again. Think the first panel looks a little too filtered. The figures seem more 'blurred' than the wall. Good stuff, see you next round. Noticed your topic was chosen.

Leprechaun-I'm looking forward to seeing more. Just keep in mind that distances farther in view are going to be lighter. who's the small kid with the blades on the left part of the image? I like your idea.
erniesthings-nice sense of scale with the figure standing there. I like the shadow behind him/her. I would work on thumb-nailing some ideas before you start on the piece. it'll let you get out different scenarios and you might actually combine the positives on a couple thumbs to really make a great comprised shot.
c4l3b-I love your dedication. You come in here trying different things which is great. I would say that the contrast comment that ashton made about globals. looking at both of your attempts, I would say that I'm leaning toward the first one just because of the way the "ribcage" walls pull you in. I like your idea with the skull submerged...but having the idea of a maze on the page would've helped the viewer. good job.
blunderbus-When I first look at the image I see two people standing in front of a huge pile of bones. I think the reason is that everything is super detailed that the viewer can't distinguish far away objects with close objects. Great detail work with the pen. I love your intricacy.
Mitze-Thanks for the comment! I like your update from yesterday. great sense of mood. I love the pose for the female character. going with the dark lipstick gives her a darker presence. The right side of her forehead region of her looks a little wonky, but all in all you did a great job.
EBrown-I like what you have going so far. Especially holding the light through the maze. I'd like to see this one completed and seeing a couple more render passes. great idea though.
ashton-I'm shivering looking at it. Nice cold, winter feel to the piece (if I'm wrong, sorry) I wish the camera zoomed a little more in to get some of the detail in the walls of the maze.
armando-I look at this and know that I'm in a maze. I like how you have your figures looking like they are trying to figure out how in the hell they're going to get out.

Sorry I couldn't get to everybody. I'll try to make an entry for Uniped Cyclops. Thanks for all the crits, It helped out a lot.

Titus James I'll crit your second:
I think the way the bones seem like ornaments on concrete walls isn't as cool as some of the other twists on the idea, but that's personal taste.

Your mix of hard and soft edges isn't working - The way you have the hard, well defined walls with fuzzy bones sticking out, the way the wall doesn't fade into the bg...
Play with it some more, maybe you'll master creating depth of field (I don't myself, so I not sure :teeth: )
