Your environmental stuff is looking pretty darn sweet. But something on your characters is putting me a little off. Don't get me wrong, I actually really like your stuff, but they cannot be compared to your environmental stuff!

Your environments are great, the characters you draw are the only things that throw it off, environments look like your specialty.

I can't crit these, way above my head, I can't even see what the others don't like about the characters, especially image013.jpg this one just blows me away man.

your environments are strong. Good stuff
As for the characters, try exploring different avenues. More movement, more attitude. I can't nit pick, thats not my style. Overall strengthening your knowledge of human anatomy wouldn't hurt.

that last one is quite ammusing, i dont see much wrong with your characters at all, i like the over all style of these works a lot, the use of colour is very advanced and the sort of twisted fairy tale aura is captivating.

amazing details and mood in your illustrations man, impressive as hell. I have actually looked over your art and progress for quite a while and seeing how you evolve is a greatly inspiring.
I think that your environments are a few notches above your characters so work on your weaker side to improve overall.
You are really getting pro stuff out nowadays man, congratulations!

Hey dude, I see you've started a new book and carried over your favourite works...the new environment is pretty sweet and rich in details...did you have reference for what objects etc. to include, or was this all out of your head? It reminds me a bit of bioshock with the plans growing on the side, floor and general theme. Did you use the perspective tool on other images to create your floor patterns?
What is improving more is that you are keeping the high contrast work, while reducing some of the grain that sometimes didnt work in harmony with the pieces.

dude you've been working so hard...and shame for not posting for a while!
Hopfully people will start dropping you more comments, as long as you comment back ;) haha.
I really enjoy environments like the last one you posted...with more creative composition and design. The speed painting of the ship has amazing focus, and you get some great mood in some of those horror style shots.
What is the initial idea for your indoor shots...do you see a 'sewer' enviornment and make your own...or just think of something you haven't tried before? Lots of reference, or mostly for textures?
are you working somewhere now?
armetage
May 28th, 2009, 02:51 PM
thanks Jakers im glad you dropped by, long time no see mate!
Hehe ye ive been working a lot! i dont have any in-house position yet, mostly freelance at the moment.
I dont usualy have any idea while i start these pieces, i just try new things out all the time, which the composition use to suffer from :P
I use many custom brushes for many of the effects, and textures for some stuff. I do look at references when i feel like i don´t have enough knowledge or ideas for something

Very interesting looking stuff bud! I'm interested in your process for these...are you sometimes painting over base geometry from 3D images for the environments? A little bit of photos here and there (the bg trees in post 69 maybe?) if so they are worked into the concept nicely with the style.
Was the jet just straight up painted as well or perhaps over some reference for the perspective? I only ask because I like what I see :) Thanks for visiting my sb. I never do Interior environments so perhaps I can learn a bit form yourself!

You have a strong vision. Your enviros have an unbelievable atmosphere. :D
The only crit would be that your humans sometimes don't look as believable as your enviros and weaken them. But I see that you're already working on that one. ;)

Aye! You've gotten a hel lot better man! You still got the very original colour schemes which I always admired but on top of that you're overall skill has gotten a lot more proffesional. Really pro stuff your showing. One tip on that girl in the wheelchair. She kinda lacks some emphasize and the main focus kinda lies at the wall due to the high amount of crisp textures. So you might wanna detail the girl's face just a tad more. But yea that's just some minor thought. Overall stunning job!

Hey there Robin! Sure miss your kick ass concepts over at Eclipse, but I'm sure you're busy with real work. Saw that you posted in the portfolio review thread and thought I'd say hi. I actually took some time off from Eclipse to start putting together a portfolio myself, then Ron asked if I wanted to be a lead...and we only have like 2 concept artists, lol, you know how it is. Anyway, I'm balancing work, the mod, and trying to put a friggin folio together!
Hopefully I'll be able to see your folio crit, mine will be brutal I'm sure.

Man, your artwork is amazing.
You do have to practice the human figure to match your skills on doing background.
Not because you aren't good doing characters (in fact you are very good) but because you are INSANE doing backgrounds! Superb work.
I must say you have a very powerful imagination, your artwork is very rich in details and original elements.
Its not just regular folks in some futuristic environment, they are unique characters on bizarrely cool locations.
Great job.

Amazing, amazing stuff. I really needed a pick me up because lately I find art school VERY frustrating (as in, not being able to paint what I really desire) and this entire thread has made my brain into mush with all the jaw dropping work.
Your enviornments, right off the bat, are professional and the textures, atmosphere, arghhh, all of it all together is just perfect. I love them! Such a great inspiration for a aspiring enviornment artist. Do you often use photo references or 3d programs to block out your work? And painter or photoshop? I'm just curious as to how you got those beautiful textures!
Great sketchbook, though. Five stars, def.

I too really dig your style, I like how you did the grayscale portraits, showing balanced sides of solid and loose style. Your environments are breathtaking! Textures and details are right on the spot!
I'm going to subscribe you for more inspiration!
Thank you for the inspiration and motivation to keep me going with my art study!

Oooh I love your environments! I feel quite inspired! There's such a range and there seems like there's a story to them each of them :) There's a word for that isn't there for work that has a "narrative" ah damn it's slipped my mind this early in the morning! Keep it up!

Amazing works dude! Loving the enviros. Maybe you colud define the lightsources a bit more, that would make your scenes more dramatic. Also, the strokes on the faces of your females are a bit distracting, I think they'd work better if you got rid of that crispy look (only in the face area), but that's more an opinion.
Anyway, great work in here! Keep it up:)

Great stuff. I love a lot of the color schemes, like the one in the image with the gas mask guys and the buildings in the background.
A lot of your environments are totally sick. You might want to try branching out into some more unusual subject matter. But you seem to really be "there" as far as the art, a lot of it is just awesome.

It'll sound really lame if I said this but I love your work man! <3 It's really awesome. You've really worked hard to hone your skills. One thing that gets me is the variety in the environments. Also the depiction of color, mood, atmospheric perspective, and texture. It's truly remarkable.

Truly some imaginative environments coupled with a wonderful sense of storytelling.
Your anatomy and figure work could use improvements, just go for a whole bunch of gesture drawings or drawing from life/photos and you'll get the hang of it soon enough.
Beautiful work overall!

Really like your cityscapes and the dynamic angles and movement you chose to integrate into them, really keeps my attention and feels like I'm actually a character within the setting/scene.. Its almost as if somethings going to happen in one of these.. something dramatic..

These last ones are incredible, do you have a process you wouldn't mind posting?
I like the second image is #186, really nice angle and composition, eye flows around nicely.
I'm trying to get to grips with using textures in this way, making them look seamless with the image. You've done it very well as it takes a while to spot what's photographic texture and 3d model as opposed to painted texture, well done!

Very cool scenic work. The only advice I have is to try and not have the planes of your drawing seperate too much. In some places, foreground characters seem disconnected from the background space, which disconnects the viewer from there scene. Less hard contrast between planes, more subtle atmospherics.
But great work, keep at it!

Wow, some beautiful environments here!!
Quick point regarding the latest ones (I assume they are coming from a sketchup base). Before you capture the shot from the model, play around with the options in the "edit" tab of the styles window. That way you can produce images of pure planes and no lines which may be easier to paint over, or even an image of just lines and no planes (and even if you want to keep the lines, it's only a quiick adjustment to get you back to the lines).
Keep up the great work, looking forward to seeing more tech and enviros!!
