Topic: Towtruck
Background: No restrictions this time around, feel free to go all out on this topic :)
There's something planned for the next round, so I thought I'd be good to keep this round open and easy. Keep your eyes and ears open is all I say.
Brief:
1. Design and draw a Towtruck!
2. That's it... now draw!
Deadline: Sunday May 11

this might be a silly question, but does it have to be a "truck" truck?

Nightblue: Not necessarily :) As said, the topic is wide open for interpretation.

Sketching...

coldrum - nice piece, might have to go back to the drawing board myself to avoid similarities. The windows and rungs make the vehicle look quiet small but it gives off a feeling of a larger scale (maybe just from the low pov) - something to clarify the scale some more may help. Looked at your website and saw that lots of pieces I'd seen inderpendently and was impressed with are all done by you - look forward to seeing how this comes together.
funghi - I think that would count as deviating from the topic. After all if you were asked to design a tow-truck for a job they wouldn't be happy with a missile-truck.

Coldrum: Yep awesome sketch, hope you get to finish it :) I agree with D-Holme about the scale issues though.
Fughi: Hehe yeah that first idea might be a bit too far away from the topic. Your second search is better :P
D-Holme: Hmm we're going to talk about sideviews etc. in the next mentor thingy, as there is something more to say on that subject :) I like the size of that last sketch, but in terms of form language and originality I'd say try to push the design a bit more towards something unique. It looks still a lot like existing trucks in a way.
I might enter this round myself for once, been a while since I finished some real ID stuff myself :)

Yoitisi - I like to sketch ideas down in ortho (usually side views) to get my ideas down quickly - maybe the design looses something in that though? The final should be a perspective though.
Hallo - shame not to have time to finish it (a well known feeling though) - I like the originality of the design - though you cannot see the back it might need something to stop it tipping over backward (supports at the rear or a counterweight at the fore?).
The first three sketches were looking at contemporary vehicles, forth was moving up a scale again. I had thought about doing something 'Mad-Max-esque' but I think that it might be done to death...

D-Holme: It's not only the 3d shape that is important in a sideview, but it can also help to figure out how to place lines and details in a logic way for the design.
So, I figured I needed to do some ID stuff for myself again, so I started sketching. It began with a couple of existing towtrucks, slowly working towards some more interesting designs. Lots to do I guess :P

This TowTruck-O-Copter is about towtrucking the accident cars and victims through air by the red cross in 2061,
or maybe the police could use it as a solution for cars in parking infringement, when the city is messed up with traffic jam.
Although it has 4 hooks, it can only carry one car.one cabine is for a pilote, one is for a sani.
Hoping that this does not blast the topic :)

Funghi - I think the idea's interesting but needs some more work to finish it off:
The different tones of ground shadow looks odd.
The modules themselves could do with some shading to build their form out - maybe the shading for them shouldn't just be greys rather darker versions of the parent colour.

Slacked off too much during break week to make this round. Sweet stuff here.
yoitisi: I'm jealous of a lot of aspects of your skill, but I really want to steal your line quality at the moment.
D-Holme: Sweet sketch. How long did it take for you to do that? Do you start from silhouettes?

Well done lads, too bad you didnt finish Coldrum, looks like a vehicle that could prod some serious buttock.

Here's my entry for this week's activity:
http://www.milecastle.com/skb/IDW70_DHolme.jpg
Tried for a loostened up effect but mostly focused on perspective form and strong shadows.
Yoitisi - thanks for the comments before, went back to the drawing board and reworked my ideas for something quite different (hopefully not too different though).
Nightblue - thanks, as is evident I ended up departing quite along way from my original sketches. The ortho sketches don't take that long at all (5-15mins) but I don't like to work from silhouettes as I usually have a good idea of the 3D design in my head and I'd loose some of that with just the outlined form.

A quick note from my side of the net: the faculty building next to the flat I live in burned down yesterday (it was on fire the whole day long, lots of smoke etc.) My flat and the one next to it was evacuated because of this, and currently its still unsure when I can return. I'm at my own faculty right now to post this, but the poll have to be postponed a bit. The next round will start with no delay however :)

Wo-how Coldrum posted a quite Al Gore unfrendly design. That heavy recovery unit is not bad. that arm he designed is kinda cool. Odd I didn't saw the activety anouncement for that truck.
