I guess you can take a look at my junk? It's not very good, but I am trying to learn. Most of everything you are about to see is just from the last few weeks because I bought some of the GnomonWorkshop Dvds and I got inspired to start drawing again.

I highly Recommend them you guys. Anyway so I used some brushes from one of the dvds you may or may not recognize so I don't take any credit for them, but most of the paintings I try to use my own brushes so yeah. Also there is one or two plates from the dvd in here that I used to paint on so don't flame me if you notice that it came with the dvd and it was good practice. Oh who cares it's a sketchbook.

Okay ♥

You've got some nice stuff here, Chris! I'm a bit new to photoshop, so I can't give you much advice there, but it looks like your experimenting a lot with the different brushes. Anyway, have fun with that and post more soon!

Chris_Grisham
May 5th, 2008, 02:38 AM
Hey thanks jamesy! I have been practicing quite a bit the last few weeks. Everything you see here is about all the photoshop I've done other than a few pointless scribbles here and there so I'm still a super noob at it. I think I'm learning pretty fast though. I've been reading lots of books and watching tons of dvds... it seems to be helping wonderfully.

I'm just trying to learn like crazy until i can afford to go back to school.

Thanks again!

D.Focus
May 6th, 2008, 09:59 AM
damn dude, you look like you're on your way to some good enviros. doing way better at this sci-fi scenery thing than i am. only crit is that when you go to render the details in them you losr the hard edges. ifeel like the fuzziness is taking away from all that good depth of field you've got goin on. nice work. post more. :)

Chris_Grisham
May 6th, 2008, 06:39 PM
D.Focus- thanks a lot man. nice tip I will try and stop that.

Hyptosis- thank you... some of yours look pretty good to me, i'm pretty new though so i don't have the best eyes for seeing what it really good you know?

I kinda like the feel of the last two, they remind me of the halo universe. I noticed with the last piece and an earlier piece that the birds all have the same position (with some just angled a little). You'll probably notice from life that groups of birds don't flap their wings in perfect sycronization. Anyway, I'm probably being nit-picky, so just keep them coming!

Chris_Grisham
May 15th, 2008, 02:34 PM
yeah you are partly right, because i did these bird think they are like hawks or something and birds like that hardly flap their wings at all. They just ride the wind all day.

I noticed this because I watch them fly around over a field behind my house every time I go out and have a smoke.

Good eye though I give you credit for noticing that.

This was about a 10 minute pen sketch i decided to throw some paint on. Just goofing around really. I'm thinking I'll do something much like this but refine it way more.

As this is now I think it is horrible, but hey I post it anyway.

Hi Chris, nice stuff, putting that dvd to good use I see. I agree with what D.Focus was saying, you seem to lose your edges a bit which I think is caused from relying too much on low opacity brushes.

Chris_Grisham
May 31st, 2008, 03:41 AM
Peter - Yeah I get what you are saying, I'm working on that.

Thanks for the tip.

keep it up ;)

MonkeYoakum
May 31st, 2008, 07:44 AM
Looks like some nice stuff, that wacom is sexy. All I can say is paint from life, sometimes I see tonal inconsistancies and edge issues. Soft edges can be your friend, but you want to use them in the right places. Also on that Halo pic, even though Im sure it was just for fun, again the values are weak on the gunfire shot and the edges should be harder from such a strong light. Keep at it man, lookin great!

Grafguy- Thanks, the church was a pen sketch during a boring lecture at school witch i decided to color a few weeks ago. I kinda like the way it looks I'm sure I'll do some more like that soon.

MonkeYoakum- Thanks for the helpful tips. The halo thing was just me being goofy, but you're totally right about everything. I'll work on that as good as I can. Thanks.

Rachnir- Thanks Mate!

dchan- Thank you.

Okay thanks for your critz and comments guys i'm going to try and work on this stuff right now as I think of something to draw.

Thanks again!

Gtgamewizard- Thanks mate!

Surion- Thanks a lot!

Here are some really lame and old sketches I found from a couple years ago... I though my Sketchbook lacked some actually scans from a real sketchbook.

Anyway there is a whole load where this came from only my scanner is very slow and I only have the time to scan a few here and there.

Thanks again!

Beware these sketches are horrible :( but old too, I'll update with newer stuff later today perhaps.

I am seeing alot of cool stuff here. I like that you are checking out the dvd's, they have helped me out immensely!

Keep studying from photo reference... From what I can see it is looking good however you are missing alot of the gradients and little indications of material that the photos have. Just keep doing them and your eye will become more trained. Keep it up!

The Halo thing on the 1st page is awesome lol
Your eye paintings are pretty good, especially the second one.
My only suggestion would be to try doing paintings more defined/detailed. You clearly have the ability to do so and it would look awesome!

Okay here is a oil painting I made trying to be Bob Ross... it's a "happy little mountain". I don't really like it, but it's my first go at an oil painting so whateva.

And here is a sketch I just did of some pics in the "constructive Anatomy" Book by Bridgman.

Thanks for stopping by guys.

I leave for the airport in exactly 24 hours.... I'm getting nervous :(

Yeah! Bob Ross. Hahahaha. "Let's see what kind of bush lives here. Oh-there he is. He looks happy there." Aw, man. That guy is the best. Good job on the painting.
Bridgman's sketches are intense. His style is pretty funky-looking sometimes. But yeah, copying from those books is a huge help in learning the flow of the human body. Good stuff, man.

Chris_Grisham
June 2nd, 2008, 10:44 PM
Thanks Staticpen.

Here is my night stand next to my bed.

It took me 1 hour and 15 minutes give or take. I'm pretty pleased with it.

Let me know what you think.

Zord
June 3rd, 2008, 01:13 AM
You're definitely headed in the right direction. Mileage counts for a lot.

And don't worry about the flight to Singapore. There's plenty of crappy movies to see on the ride there ;)... along with plenty of time to draw. Also, be sure to try the 'chicken rice.' It's kinda like Singapore's signature dish sold pretty much everywhere.. and it's delicious.

Keep it up and have a good trip :)

Chris_Grisham

Alright gang, I'm leaving for the airport in a bit so this will be the last time you here from me for at least a day or two. Hell the flight is 20 hours alone!

I'm going to be so jet-lagged when I get there (Singapore). Don't worry I'll be doing lots of sketching on the plane, but I'm not sure if I will have a scanner when I get there, but I will post what I can.

I'm bringing my laptop too along with my intous3 so at least I'll be able to use that for sure.

If I take any sweet photos I'll be sure and post em for you guys to see!

Wish me luck on the long flight... I'm very nervous :(

You have some promising stuff going on here, jsut keep with it! I'm happy to see you doing studies on humans, as I was about to say that they seem like your weakness at this point, but the studies are looking nice, so hopefuly you'll be rocking humans out in no time :)

Hey everybody I'm in singapore now... been really busy the last few days so I haven't had any real time to work on anything. Expect some stuff in the next 24 hours though.

Sorry for not updating yet it's just been real crazy here, and jet-lagged like a son of a Bee. Just wanted to let you guys know I made it alive :)

Ekul- Actually no, I was to scared to even take my eyes of the flight plan. I thought I would do a lot of sketching, but I was so scared I couldn't.

Dan valkar- Thanks Man!

Capital G- Thanks and I will.

Kidape- No it's actually just a vacation... seeing the world you know? Though I am keeping an eye out for some cool art related stuff to see. Saw a cool gallery yesturday, it was pretty fly.

Lakka- Yeah I suck a drawing people, but that just means I should practice it more. Thanks for stopping by mate.

You can get a Bamboo Fun wacom tabet at bestbuy for about 75 bucks. It's not the best, but it's very handy if you cant afford a 300-500 dollar one like mine.

I used one for almost a year,

About 40 minutes.

BlightedArt
June 7th, 2008, 05:45 AM
Like everyone else said, structures are your strong point. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest you try to make a hybrid painting of both industrial structures AND natural land formations. Be creative and make it interesting such as having giant weeds wrapped around buildings, or giant trees that have industrial sites poking out of them etc.

Try to make a convincing picture merging the two, you might get a few good ideas out of it as food for thought! :) Keep up the awesome work, and hope you enjoyed your trip!

staticpen- Thanks man, it was scary though. I don't want to get on another plane ever again. Pink Floyd yay! Custom brushes this time.

Here this is lame.

Chris_Grisham
June 13th, 2008, 07:54 AM
Does anyone know how to fix this problem with graphics tablets? I am using it sometimes for an hour.... sometimes 10 minutes before it just stops working. It acts just like a mouse. No pressure... and it will not jump to the postion you are holding it at. It's making me very upset because it's been going on non-stop! The only thing that fixes it is a restart, but it just keeps happening every time I do.

I have Vista Premium on an Acer Aspire Notebook.

Anyway, sorry for not updating for a few days. I have been in Malaysia for my girlfriend's dad's golf tournament.

Here is a lame speed painting from about 15 minutes ago. I used gnomonDvd brushes in this. I really should try something more complex, but I am so pooped from all the stuff going on here.

I need a boost of inspiration.

Hey there, you have some awesome enviros going on here, I personally love the more natural ones, but your structures seem to be your strong point and they look awesome. Keep up the good work :)

There is a possibility something might be wrong with your tablet in general. A while ago i bought a Graphire 3, and had to have it repalced twice, as it just didn't work properly 0_0 The problem sounds alot like the first one i had. It just wouldn't do what i wanted it to, when i sent it back, there was something wrong with the cable. But after the second time this happened, they just sent me the newest model, and i haven't had a problem since.

I hope you get it sorted out soon :D

Hmmmm... maybe take some cool photos and then use them as references back at the house? I draw from photos in magazines and stuff sometimes. It's pretty good learning, and fun, too.

Oh fucking laptops problems!!
It might be something wrong with the USB slots.
They dont all have the same capacities and it therefore affects the devices u wanna use with them.
For instance if u plug ur wacom in a central processing unit evrything should be alright but if then u try to plug it in a USB slot of ur keyboard wich is itself connected to the central processing unit then the shit just wont work...

As far as im concerned i just cant use the touchstrips of my tablet otherwise it starts fucking acting like a damn mouse!
But fortunately i dont give half a damn 'bout touchstrips...

Anyway i really suck with computers so try the lounge or some less private thread for support.

Here is a lame speed painting from about 15 minutes ago. I used gnomonDvd brushes in this. I really should try something more complex, but I am so pooped from all the stuff going on here.

I need a boost of inspiration.

Well at the start i just wanted to reply about the speedpainting so here we go.

First, u obviously started with a gradient wich u left unchanged for the sky until the end.

Thats a problem because as im sure u can see it all by urself, this element makes the whole pic look like its taking place in some kind of big room with some casual lightsource on the left wich is, i think, not what u were going for.

Then u used:

1 custom brush for the buildings, one or several custom brushes for the ship, another one for the rocks and one last one for the clouds/fog/smoke!

This is precisely y it looks absolutely lame!

In speed-painting u have painting, do u feel like u actually painted anything?

U didnt even bother to blend the rocks together!

Custom brushes when used by M@, vyle and others serve as shortcuts to paint something, according to their knowledge of it, faster,
they arent the crutch of the painting!!

This has been already said a thousand time to a thousand people so i just wont fully develop as im almost sure u already know it all but still i really had to, because ur hurting ur art with this kind of lazyness!!

Make some studies of skies, mountains and other stuff and see for urself how its all about shapes, volumes, hues, edges, values, scale,...

No custom brush can provide u with that invaluable knowledge.

Here (http://www.terragalleria.com/) for landscape
studies ressource.

I should have gone to bed half an hour ago, (its four A.M here!)
so i hope i didnt waste my time with and u wont make the same mistakes twice!!

No offense, just aiming to help u.

See u around the forums!!!

:teeth:

Some gears love... 2 hour sketch-a-roo... it's not perfect I know I see a few mistakes, I think I'll go back to it later, but right now.... nahhh. Most of my effort was put into making his face look right... after about 10 tries at that I am please with what I have, but the rest of him needs a little more treatment for sure. Like I said, I'll work on it a bit later tonight maybe or tomorrow.

Photoshop.

Crits welcome I used ref from screenshot from ign.

Niiiice dude. I have to say, it's nice to see you really draw something different. Was getting a little worried after the however many flying robot panoramics you did, heheheh. You really got his face down good, man. Good stuff.

cool stuff man, way to pump it out. one major thing that im seeing though is your colors seem to be a little discordant and saturated. its cool if you start off that way and then grey down as needed, but reference some pics for your final paints.

keep it up man, you'll be pro-star in no time

Staticpen- Thanks I'm glad you like it. The reason I did so many like that is because even though i did lots it was still new and fun for me... and easy.

But, yeah I'm trying different things now. Moving on a bit.

TOOLED- Thank you, I'm pretty sure you are talking about everything in general and not the latest one in particular... I meant for that one to be a bit saturated like the game. But you are right mostly.

Thanks for the crit.

Just thought I'd let you guys know I'm heading back to the states tomorrow. I had a lot of fun here in Singapore for the last 25 days or so. I didn't get much work done though, but I guess it's okay.

It seems when I get back I may not be able to get online as much because our house just sold so I guess we'll be moving right after we get home... I'm not sure though. We may have a little time there, but if you don't see me that's why.

Wish me a safe flight back it's going to be another long 20 hour adventure.

Thanks,
Chris

Wouldn't you know as soon as I land in Texas I find out we live somewhere new? It's kind of cool, but then again it's kind of a pain. I don't like people moving all of my things around without me around. Things get lost that way.

Anyway, I'm back. Sorry for the lack of posts, but internet is here now and things are finally getting together in this new house. Expect new work soon.

Thanks.
