I left her nudity as safe for work as I could stand.
I'm trying not to use black at all. I think it is helping.

Caleb -- Not sure if that looks like a fairy to me, but I can almost hear a screech as it pops out, I like it :) Love the frog too!
Helios-- I like the energy colors you've got there, nice contrast! good pose too, although I think she might be falling forward a bit:)
Here's mine. almost didn't remember to cover the fairy boobs with goop --- hopefully this meets the nudity restriction!

There you go, added an ear, wings, and fixed the nose shadow so it didn't look like she's screaming. Look a little more traditional now?

April 29th, 2008, 09:11 AM
more readable as a fairy now Caleb, although I don't think that there was any real need to do so -- I think its perfectly valid to interpret 'fairy' as you wish!
I kinda liked the screaming expression she had before, but the new one is good too -- more of a curious, awakening look which fits.
psycho -- nice use of the leaves for scale and atmosphere
Jiva-- interesting figure -- what is that light coming out of her forehead?

Here's mine. Kinda blah, though. The figure needs more movement. Right now it looks like she's about to scratch her butt and find a place to pee. But I think the best part of working on this was when that owl appeared in that dark smudge. I think I could make something out of this.
Good idea for a sketch challenge, by the way.
Why do I keep doing that glowing hole in the clouds thing?

Mitze- Amazing, I love the pose and colors. Any references? or all just from your head? Anyway KUDOS
Leprechaun- Good color scheme. I'm kind of lost in the cacoon area though, I can't really put it all together, but good work none the less.
benkashmir- nice composition and creative cacoon, I like! I think the anatomy is a bit to thick in some parts but overall the shading is awsome.
Eurayo- creepy! reminds me of brom maybe?
armando- I think yours is my favorite so far, very funny take on the subject.
Heckedy Peg- Gross! but cool...
EBrown- Very good greyscale, I think the wings are my favorite part
heLiOS di PiERO- Great pose, nice dynamic lighting , I think it'd be cool if you worked with that blue pool more, and added more highlights over the model.

c4l3b: nice work, blurry frog was genius... helped give a better sense of proportion and added kinda Discovery channel reality.. a little cruel but cool =) i keep staring at it waiting to see what happens.
Oofnish: thanks, i can see what u say. I like the moving feeling on yours although that last minute added goop was a little too much for me.
scumworks: nice work man, not sure what it is that i like but i do like it, good colors and simple water reflection maybe.
EBrown: love the "just hatched" look on it, the pose and the character itself, just one thing keeps bothering me ..is that an umbilical cord??
Heckedy Peg: interesting concept, great expression and feeling but to me it looks more like it is being eaten by it (that thing even has blood vessels!), just me tho =)
benkashmir: good job, i like ur first version better, i think the color variation adds a lot more to it than the bluescale version although u might say it isn't too faerie looking then.. oh well
PowerAnimal:thanks, i thought about it, just didn't have enough time. I like ur concept, much like the ones i used to see in the books when i was a kid.

I was in until I read no nudity. Do human babies emerge with clothes on?
That's part of the challenge, figuring out poses and placing objects to hide the nudity. Making the fairy less human looking is another way to bypass the nudity part. Adding clothes also allows more design possiblities.

something totally wrong, Photoshop and me just don't blend together yet... I will do my best to get rid of this and my other big problems, I don't plan to post something bad again...
well, my picture don't follow _exactly_ the topic, but it's not too far from it. the fairy has just born from her crysalis, she takes some rest while her wings are still wet, wondering about what her new life will be, what she gained and what she lost...
I know nothing about the life cycle of fairies, but the caterpillar with its carefree and simple lifestyle suited my idea :)

helios de piero - very good colors, the magical chrysalis can be refined abit.
scumworks - i like the waterlili and colors (flower if i mispelled)
armando - good concept, and nice start forms blocking.
eurayo - nice composition, note that her right chest could be pushed and rounded outside abit as her spine is curving to that direction.
mitze - favourite. good colors and pose, this can be taken further as a complete painting.
poweranimal - very good pencil work, only crit is that her chest seem flatten abit.
ninjacat11 - i like the direction, try washing her body with a pink multiply color to reduce those whites, save the white for an extreme highlight.
exiledred - good concept, the right one is too monstery, try to put its element on the left one and you got a good start.
anthis - also good concept and colors. the chrysalis is awsome.
grunig - like the studies and "heroine" look you giving the faerie.

This is the second time I post here, and it has been 3 months (or 4?) since my last post here I guess. Anyway, hope you guys like it:P. Done in PS, about 3 hrs.
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc33/matining/speed040508bcopy.jpg
cold_whisper - nice one:P, I wouldn't worry about the head too much since her hair covers the face.
c4l3b - It would be great if you tried to put more values in this piece I suppose.
heLiOS di PiERO - Great lighting, would love to see some background as well.
Oofnish - nice drawing
Psychostrat - Sweet!
JIVA*SOUL - It's rather special, is this a fary? Nice painting anyway:P
erniesthings - The design of your fary can be more detailed I think, the composition and light help to get the focal point though
Hamsta - It's cute!
scumworks - Way to go man, love the shade.
EBrown - Hum... the detail of this piece really appeals me.
Heckedy Peg - creepy LOL. It's a nice try, though I think that you can try a wider range of colours
rmando - Looks good
Eurayo - Great job man, it's my favorite one:P.
benkashmir - I envy Zbrush.... it must be interesting to manipulate shapes in it. Nice painting:P.
youremin - Nice try, try to pay more attention on anatomy might be helpful.
Mitze - Wooo, it's sweet. Really looking forward to see a finished one. I think you must be exhausted after paining her:P.
PowerAnimal - Nice drawing, I would recommend some more contrast to be added.
Auren - I love her expression and pose, colour looks nice too. It only needs to be polished more:P.
ninjacat11 - Looks nice man, be aware of the edge control will be helpful I think.
Lot's - The colour looks a bit flat to me, also I think that practicing of skin tone will help a lot. Nice painting anyway:P
torazine - Love the colours. The only crit from me is the anatomy, her shoulder and arm seem a bit awkard to me.
Sorry for not including everyone, but I am trying to make my comments as practical as possible.

unSharpened Quite a pleasing mix of colors, and they work well to draw the focus to the fairy.
The textures and scribbles add to the interest, but you need to be more careful with them, randomly they just flatten the image, and lead the eye astray.
I think you also might have looked for more elegant solutions to the no nudity rule, rather than using strategically placed hair/goo/arm
