I must first say that this site is simply incredible. The standard of work is insane and the passion of everyone I've seen here is inspiring.

I finally realised that while lurking is a whole lot of fun, I need to actually get my work out there and hopefully receive some criticism and help so that I may improve.

I hope I'm allowed to post the Nathan Fowkes copies because I've learnt a lot by trying to copy the process but with a normal mech pencil. It's a really interesting style and I hope to explore it further some time.

You were exactly right. So I went and boiled the kettle before looking at your SB. :)

Firstly, post all the copies you want to - copies are one of the best ways to learn, and as long as you're crediting the artist and not trying to make money off the copies, no one will mind.

Secondly, good for you! It's nice when a lurker comes out of the woodwork. It's also cool when someone commits to gaining skills and improving their work.

And thirdly - some criticism....

The copies are okay, but seem small and cramped - you can work bigger if it lets you feel freer with your lines. Just cos it's a copy doesn't mean you have to be rigid. Also, their proportions are off here and there, so they may be worth revisiting. Most of the faces you draw are all smooth curves from their skull to their jawline. Most faces buckle in here and there, around the junction of the cheekbones. It's very noticible in the first portrait you posted "annie combined". Gotta keep working on the facial planes and stuff myself, so it's tough, let me tell you. But keep at it.

You have a nice sense of colour. The Master Chief, the enviro and the "welovefrankie..." coloured pieces are nice.

The "godsprophet" in the first post looks well, good start. A little more confident-seeming than the miscellaneous pieces in your second post. Try to hold onto that confident energy. The anatomy and portrayal of the miscellaneous stuff jis just a bit more washy, less convincing.

I'm up waaaaaaaaaay past my bedtime, so I'll stop rambling. I'll be back in this thread again. Keep working hard and posting!

Thanks for taking the time to reply, donalfall, I appreciate it. I've always been conscious of the fact that I draw on a very small scale- I'll try make them bigger and looser.

I have a couple of more things which I didn't have time to post up yesterday. The first is a COW entry that I didn't finish in time and the other five pages are figure/gesture sketches. A hundred of them to be precise.

<up-dated: I found the google extracts of 'Constructive Anatomy' and copied a couple of images from there. Hopefully I'll get the book at some point.>

Copying is good, but it's important to draw from life and such so you can apply what you've learned. ;) Just keep that in mind as you're drawing and I think things will go smoothly for you. You have really confident pencil strokes so continue with those! :D Good luck. :)

I've not posted in a while but I have been drawing and so I thought I ought to post some of my newest sketches. Please be aware that some are more finished than others.

The first lot are mostly just character designs but the bottom image is two separate sketches where I apparently decided to use some sort of surreal cartoon style- I have no idea why I drew those.

I think that you do an incredible number of little sketches of people/hads/things. Which is brilliant! (Unless you did them in the space of three years or something :-) ) I was particularly impressed by the hand sketches. They look like none of the other of your drawings, but they are great!

Once one can draw a hand very well - one can draw anything very well. :-)

hey man, u're trying very hard i see with those, but before character design, i suggest u take a look at this (Andrew Loomis, "Figure Drawing for all its Worth")
It's a book u can find quite easy and it teaches allot about the human figure in all it aspects.

Up-dating with more sketches done today. The bottom left image of the second sheet is a first attempt at trying to use the Bridgman style outside of anatomy/figure studies but unfortunately I've not yet been able to make anything that looks good.

Serious lack of updating but I'm working on it. I've been trying out a more loose, Mullins-esque style with my drawings and I'm not where I want to be just yet but that's where more practise comes in handy.

Jason Scanlon: Thank you for the encouragement. I really don't draw as much as I want to so I'm working on putting more time in.

Another portrait from ref as I continue my digital campaign. This one took... too long (no thanks to the using of mouse and weird angles on the photo ref) and the initial "complete" version was pretty much all wrong so I had to resort to a small amount of cheating but it's all about learning the techniques, colours and how to paint stuffs so for that reason it was worth it.

-First is the final drawings for the two characters I did for the recent team chow project.
-The second piece is a couple of quick sketches I did of some objects in my garden.
-Third is a piece done from a tutorial over at drawspace.com which studies an original art work by Michelangelo.
-The fourth piece is some random sketching mixed with small concept bits for 'The Endless' chow.
-The final piece is a 'finished' piece for the aforementioned Endless chow. It was not my intention to submit this piece as I couldn't come up with a solid character design, yet still I wanted to see how my initial 'vision' for the final piece would turn out.

More stuff, hopefully there should be a steady flow now I'm starting to get more into Chow and Eow.

-First up is a concept piece of a generic zombie surfer
-Second is some quick sketches from ref photos (apologies for the crazy hand on the violinist)
-Next up is my submission for EoW 114 (the bridge between two cities) the idea I ended up going with for the bridge was a window into space wherein a blackhole is dragging in the matter from the environment
-Final image is some initial skecthes for this week's CHoW (163).

A few weeks back, I started to study george&guo's style and though I've only produced a few sketches now, I certainly plan on doing more soon.

You may recognise the third piece as it's a pencil drawing of one of El Coro's latest portrait paintings- I really liked how the brush strokes accentuated the shape of the face so I was compelled to copy it in the hope of learning something.

The final piece is just a few timed posemaniacs sketches and a sketch of an image from hel-looks.com. One of these days I swear I will get to finish a posemaniacs study before the time runs out.

A few new sketches including a sketch of how I imagined Rincewind of discworld fame to look after having picked up 'The colour of magic' recently'. The portraits are of stoph and Ilaekae (he looked like Dumbledore in the photograph so I went with it ;]). Unfortunately, most of the stuff I've been doing recently is for the team chow and is too rough to bother posting.

Up-date time.

-The first two pieces are my final entries for the recent Team ChOW. Unfortunately our team didn't pull through but it was a lot of fun.
-The third piece was from an old posemaniacs session I'd done and forgotten to scan.
-Next up is a dwarf character which I'd been working on for the afore-mentioned team chow but which I didn't end up using as the final character. However, this is a mostly final drawing of the character.
-Next is just random drawings from imagination plus a couple of rough sketches of some of my family when I went to visit my grandmother.
-I was recently reminded of Wes Burt’s work and really loved the pieces which mixed together several drawings into one. I therefore am currently experimenting with the presentation of drawings and how to do that in an interesting way. Nothing too crazy at the moment but I'm going to keep at it.

-First, a sketch of some sort of weird character.
-The second is an alternative Dwarf design painting based on a pencil drawing I'd done of a Dwarf character for a Team Chow but hadn't used.
-The portraits were an experiment based on using an airbrush... brush.
-The last piece is some sort of cyborg or combat armour and still very rough but I thought I'd post the wip anyway.

Niiice improvement. My only crit would be to work on faces and proportions a bit since some of the heads are too big on the shoulders. Keep it up dude. :)
