Having been encouraged through my first ever sculpt by the good people of this forum-(http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1705401&posted=1#post1705401)
I thought I'd broaden my scope by trying out the female form in a semicartoony-semi real format.Hence Bruce Timm!

So here are my favorite super-dames:

Composed together:

Not bad, eh?

Okay I've started with Storm. Some turnarounds to help me work out the bugs in the pose:

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=356196&stc=1&d=1209222808

Armature:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=356197&stc=1&d=1209222808

I like an armature I can hold in my hand;more chance of squishing the sculpey details with that though...

Epoxy to keep joints rigid(thanks SmellyBug!):
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=356199&stc=1&d=1209222808

Laying on the sculpey:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=356200&stc=1&d=1209222808
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=356201&stc=1&d=1209222808

Its hard to keep the muscle shapes rounded as I'm used to building the model by actually placing sculpey muscles and then smoothing out. For a semi-cartoony character, that method introduces too much definition...This is definitely another learning experience...

Thanks guys!I've been working flat out with that evil scientist glint in my eyes!

Brantoreilly, if you click the links, the pictures open up in a separate window nicely resized...

Storm is more or less finished;just have to do her boots.

For her cape, I bent some wire mesh into shape and then layered sculpey over it.
Her face/head was most difficult for me to do;I must have redone it about 16 times! I'm convinced 80% of the cartoon look is in the face;large eyes, smallish lips and nose and tapered face...

It may be too late or irrelevant, but for future reference, the size and placement of Storm's head in your turnaround are are different from the original drawing.

Wow a level 17 commenting...thanks Elwell!
The sketches were just for reference's sake;to resolve how major masses would look...

Time for Shayera Hol!!!

And after much hair-pulling-ly patience:

I think I spent more time on that wing than on the whole of Hawkgirl's body...Sheesh!

i would suggest working with one at a time

Some detailing:
http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn317/riteguytu/IMGP0135.jpg

For the hand,I basically stuck some wire strands in a ball of sculpey and used a heat gun to harden it.Then I layered on the sculpey up to the right thickness for the fingers...
Is there an easier way to do this, folks?

The head piece was fun to do;sorry I was enjoying myself so much, I forgot to take progress pics! I used 3 triangular wire mesh pieces for this;1 at each side of her face and 1 at the rear bent into the right shapes...

http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/nn317/riteguytu/IMGP0136.jpg

Got a nifty mini-drill set off ebay;used it to drill holes to fit the wings. My idea is to bend wire and push it through the wing holes and into the holes in her back...

riteguytu
April 28th, 2008, 02:56 PM
Yayy! My babes are all done.I've sprayed them with primer to see the details;guess i have to start using grey super sculpey soon.

So Storm is supported by a discreet metal rod that goes into hawkgirl's right wing and she sits on another support on the same wing. The only problem is, that means hawkgirl's left leg is taking all the weight...

Now the base. I'm thinking a grand, mayan influenced, tower thingy.Like this:

I'm thinking I should put a medallion in front of it;an eagle in flight...What do you folks think?

We're lazy. Post the photos in the thread itself, you can use the uploadmanager of ca itself. I think it looks ok, but it does differ from your original composition and drawing when it comes to the poses. Timm has awesome lines.

Ah I see...
Okay here's the base in progress.I drew it up in AutoCAD, printed it out and modelled it with thick cardboard.I'm now layering sculpey on it on which will go my textures. I've punched a hole through the base so that when I bake, the air has an outlet...
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=358234&stc=1&d=1209473979

And here are my girls assembled on their base in all their feminine glory!

I have modified the poses a wee bit as I had to take into account the engineering of how they would stand on their base...What do you folks think?

I'm waiting for my airbrush ink order to arrive.I can't wait to start painting!!:yum:

A bit of progress with the base...I wanted something dark that would 'throw out' the brightly coloured heroines.I also wanted something 'stoney' and 'woody'.
Here goes:

Basecoat wash on 'rocks':
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=359911&stc=1&d=1209680630

Edges darkened and some drybrushing done. The centre bit is going to be the woody bit, I think...
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=359912&stc=1&d=1209680630

At 90%:

I think I'd have tied Storm's foot into Wonder woman's back somehow to avoid the rod, but It looks great!
