i was just wondering if animators make a decent living or do they have to also do freelance work to make a living

it all depends how good you are.
usually the guys who are after the money aren't the greatest ones.;)

When going into art in any field, don't expect to make a shitload of money..

Do it cause you love it..

And if you are good there is a chance you can make a shitload of money...

Especially true for the animation industry.

im not going after the money and i know that art isnt the best paying industry in the world... i was just wondering if needed to get to better range of techniques so i can do more freelance work if i needed to:D

animators who are good do fine as far as pay goes...

if you're really passionate about what you do you won't be satisfied with just doing your day job and collecting the check.. you'll want to do more

If you are good, and i mean good, you can and more than likely will do well. If your just okay, then you will probably end up fitting that starving artist stereotype. I tried getting into the animation industry right out of highschool and had a teacher who knew alot of people at disney. If you go and work at a big studio like that, you can't freelance. They own your ass, and then you will be their slave. I don't know about smaller studios though. But I do know that visual development people get paid more than any animator will. Granted people like glen keane and such probably get paid a pretty penny. But who knows, traditional animation is pretty much dead and 3d is taking over, which is a damn shame.

Honestly this question is way to vague, i go to school for animation but what kind are you talking about? even then it depends on experience and the company/studio.

yeah, gasmask put it best, it is really vauge. Animation is a huge market and theres so many avenues. I could answer better if your question is a little more specific.
