thanks to nicked for the cool topic!

ADDITIONAL INFO

1. We are seeking a species which is the missing link between two existing species.

2. The two already existing species don't need to be relative to each other. In fact it will be a much cooler result, if you choose 2 species which are quite different.

3. Please don't make an obviously cheap mix of 2 creatures, eg like a horse with horns which is supposed to be the link between a horse and a goat. Try to make it more interesting and thought-out.

4. No individual/character!!! Make a concept of a species!

I'll be doing the missing link between dolphins and horses based upon the mythology of Poseidon. I'll basically be creating a hippocampus only much cooler. I'm just taking the myth and making it more scientific so it would fit in with the theory of evolution.

In Greek art, Poseidon rides a chariot that was pulled by a hippocampus or by horses that could ride on the sea. He was associated with dolphins and three-pronged fish spears (tridents). He lived in a palace on the ocean floor, made of coral and gems.

Poseidon gave man the first horse and is usually associated with the horse and he taught man how to tame and ride the horse. It is said that the horse was invented after a dispute with Athene over the honour of the naming of the capital of Attica. The gods decreed that the city would be named after the god that gave mankind the most useful gift. Poseidon struck the ground with his trident, and from the place where it struck, sprang forth a horse.

My first time in here...

I've been drawing a lot of kangaroos and koalas lately and this topic gave me an excuse to try out the two species combined.

Just a rough pencil sketch of the missing link between kangaroos and koalas.. a kangaroala?

questions:
1. is it okay to use a group of species for one part, like ...dogs or suthim? Or is a strict connection to one special species the only way?
2. how about standard fantasy creatures?dragon, unicorns?no own invention, mayb with ref picture or text? (actually i do not want to try it this way)

EricT...That's a great idea and concept so far! can't wait to see the final

i made a creature concept two days ago....i know it's not allowed to enter designs which aren't exclusively made for the contest...but it fits the topic pretty well so i thought i'll share it.

The banatoo horse....an ancient creature used as a mount by great kings...is the missing link between a duckbill and a zebra.

This thread reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite. Ligers. Lions and Tigers. Basically pretty much Napoleon's favorite animal.

;)

If I have time I will do the evolutionary link between Pandas and Penguins... The Pandguins from Pangea, before the landmasses separated. After that, Asia stayed warm but Antarctica got colder... resulting in the two different evolutionary paths.

Or some such.

Hey all, I'm a first timer at the Creature of the Week threads. Here I have what I like to call a Crocodylus Sexapus. If you didn't catch that, it's a crocodile and an octopus with only 6 arms (aka a sexapus). http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/03/04/octopus.uk/index.html Check it to see it's "sexiness".

1. well, a dog is a species anyway, isn't it?

2. Could be fun, but it can get out of control if some artists going too far into the fantasy world...so i would like to stick to REAL EXISTING animals.

BriantoreillyI digg the chameleon tiger! Though I suggest you try to add more tiger to the anatomy. Right now it looks like a regular chameleon that someone did a paintjob on and attached some vampire teeth, no offense :) cool idea.

I know what you mean. I was really only working on the head thus far, and I'll make sure to make it more tigerish.

Rouko
April 27th, 2008, 06:32 PM
I like the head idea, but maybe adding another tiger element to it, if you are planning to keep the feet and tail like a chameleon, I would suggest taking off the crown/crest of the lizard and replacing it with tiger ears? or maybe two crest/crowns in the shape of ears? something thats neither chameleon or tiger but a blend of both?

Briantoreilly616

Man, it has been so long since I have posted here, you guys probably don't remember me. After BSing with a co-worker about art when I should have been getting home to my new wife, I became convinced I should start doing concept art again so here we are.

And here's my concept in progress: The missing link between sharks and jellyfish. I'm not sure how pronounced to make the classic features of either but I want it to be OBVIOUS which are the contributing species.

*edit* Changed it up a bit after talking it over with some folks from work. Still the same old boring image with no background and no dynamic pose, but this time it is part Portuguese Man-o-War and part Piranha. Nasty!

EricT if you want to be scientifically accurate the top shark around then was the megalodon which later evolved into the great white. Megalodons could get over 60 feet long.

April 28th, 2008, 08:58 AM
draconas: I believe very few people here are trying to be scientifically correct. ;)

EricT: I like what you did there with the overall mood and all. However, the sharkosaurus could stand out a bit more from the background. Perhaps a subtle contrast and highlight adjustment would do the trick.

http://www.lorestrome.com/weekly/albums/userpics/10001/octophant.jpg

Artist: Hyptosis

Concept: Octophant

Named so because of it's 8 appendages... tail included... >_>

I tried to pick two animals that have nothing in reality in common but look like they could. So I though, well a trunk is a bit like a tentacle, and both animals are considered to be very smart. They both communicate with each other in unconventional ways as well, rather than just a call or something like most animals. I developed the shape of the head or body of the octopus to infact be the body of the elephant.

Also, these guys are brilliant bottle openers. You can put a peanut in a bottle, and they'll smash it right open with their foot... yeah, you thought they'd unscrew the lid didn't you. =P Look at those feet!

Also, dunno if anyone mentioned this game, man, I'd spend hours making my army, then play the give for ten minutes. Could have been amazing. =P

Draco84: I probebly will get rid of the saggy teats kinda not worth the hassle. Funny though heh. I'm concentrating on the anatomy cause I'll probebly model it in zbrush later, but I'm gonna definitly add more hair but later.
Akeley: Yeah I like that pose but i decided that it was basically just a pig with wings, so I got rid of the front legs and as a result that pose is out the window :(

Arthur that one looks fantastic, I'm really tempted to do this one...love the idea.

Edit:

Hah, oh my alright I will.

The ungodly marrige between the common turtle and a tarsier.

The Turdsier or Uglyness Maximus in Greek is a lonely creature often abandoned by it's parents as they themselves

cannot bare the sight of such a monstrosity, this being has no natural predators as more often than not they take pity in the

poor creature leaving it alone to wallow inside it's shell - too small for it's own body. This problem forces the hair on the

Turdsier outwards resulting in the display of it's awfully coloured ploomage, assured to attract no mates.

Very early WIP ^^

http://fractalbot.com/conceptartorg/Parrot_giraffe2small.JPG

For this one I chose to blend a Vulture and Giraffe, and ended up with this nasty-looking creature! Though I have to say some of my early sketches were pretty cute... Taking off the feathers made a big difference. Essentially this is a giraffe with wrinkly bird skin and a vulture's face. The feet are in-between paws and hooves, and it has the ability to grasp with its forelimbs.

For food I imagined it would still feed on carrion, but instead of leaving it on the ground it would hide it in trees, creating stores for later.

Would love to have some comments as I'm new to CA and this is my first contest!

Hello everyone, long time lurker, first time poster, and though I do not have an actual image to contribute for this round, I would like to make a comment or two to one particular user whose creation this round really caught my eye.

Firstly Vorace, I would like to ask what prehistoric creature that is that you decided to mix with the lion. The structure of the head looks strikingly familiar, but I cannot for the life of me recall what the name of it could be, nor where I would start to find such a thing out for myself. I feel as if the club-like tail should have given me a clue, but apparently it hasn't!

Secondly, I feel as if I should make a comment about the work itself, though as I have never posted here before you may choose to ignore it. I feel as if your first draft was far superior to your second, for several reasons. The first is that your wild line work gave it a much more primal and savage feel, a mood that I assume you were going for in the piece.

Scrapping the dramatically lengthened talons of the beast and that one set teeth from the jaw both literally and figuratively declawed and defanged the creature, and I feel as if something important was lost as a result. One thing that particularly caught my eye was, actually, the beast's eye. I once again believe that the addition of a pupil subtracted a certain wild, insane quality that really made the creature come to life in my mind.

While I do believe tightening up the textures for that added realism is important, I do not believe it should subtract from the emotion of the work. Putting the images side by side it looked as if the second draft had shrunken down, more of a kitten than a monstrous feline entity. I notice that the snout of the first draft contained that characteristic detail that you continued to employ in the second draft, and I believe that you could retain that detail while also retaining that magnificently bold line work from the initial image.

I suppose what I am trying to say, in a nutshell, is that my personal impression is that of a sacrifice of style for realism. The second draft certainly seems more...shall I say, believable? But for all that, it is more reminiscent of a museum piece than anything else. The first just screams out to me as being so gloriously alive.

As I said before, it's your choice whether or not to consider my opinion, being a newcomer, but I certainly hope you choose to do so. It's such a wonderful creature combination and I would love to see how far you could take it!

Lord Jamith : Thanks a lot for taking the time to crit my work! This prehistoric fish is the Dunkleosteus. It lived before the dinosaur and was the apex predator of his time. I am a bit in a hurry so I cant answer all your point, but I appreciate a lot and most of your points make sense. I am always struggling with the dilemma of how much I must refine my drawing and make it looks realistic. Maybe I will come back with something looking more like the first draft... Will need to think about it !

complete2: A pity you don't have time, cool ideas. Gorilla/Rhino would make a cool monster. so would the Gorilla/Squid. they just defrosted one big mother of a squid here.

Vorace: I was wondering what the hell that was, makes for an awesome monster head

Great work everyone, you've all surprised me with your choices. I didn't think very many good ideas would come from simple animal crossing. =]

I keep muddying up my colours though!

If I'm having issues with colour I just limit myself to grayscale, I lose confidence all the time with colour because I'm partially red/green colour blind. So I just concentrate on defining the form using tone. The cool thing with digital stuff is you can always go back and colour it later.

Hey guys, this is my first post. I was kind of reluctant about posting any art here at first, but I really wanted to take a shot at this contest. I love doing stuff like this!

Anyway, this is a Velocilope, a cross between a Velociraptor and a Sable antelope. Well, I have all night and most of tomorrow to work on this, so hopefully I can get the finished product in by tomorrow afternoon.

The color of the markings on the 'baboons' face are actually a Mandrill,

Thanks Troubador!! I guess I was confused and thought the Mandrill was a type of baboon so to speak, I guess they are just closely related. I think its time for a name change :) haha

I find that a lot of people start out entirely with greyscale in Corel and then use a "colorize" setting for a layer above... maybe I should try that one next time. I'm used to kicking it oldschool with my underpaintings and blenders though.

Well I started to paint a variation of the first Rino sketch but with some help from Rydel, changed the composition. here they are...

The first one is definitely better....like kicking 10x the ass of the second...only plus on the second is the tilted perspective which you could adapt easily to version 1.

coldrum, I likst the first better, but they're both damned sharp. Combo looks very believable too.

The dynamic charge of the first one is cool, but the actual way the perspective works in the second version is better. In the first one, the foreshortening reads (to me) as a more cartoony exaggeration for effect... and it has a sort of 'happy happy, joy joy' kind of dance move to it... not as threatening...but in the second one the warped perspective looks more like an actual optical effect. (much more threatening) The only thing I don't like in the second version is the way the tip of the horn is clipped off in the crop. It should either stay on the page or run off the page more. (I prefer the second idea, to keep the viewer close to the mouth)

So far it has my vote in any case... :) (still would have liked to see the lion snail though!)

I agree with Fozz & Hyptosis...there's just something that's altogether more dynamic in the first image [ though they're both stunning ] however Michael Jaecks makes some valid points as well. :)~

Coldrum: They both look great, I kinda like the second version but maybe because its more completed, dunno.

Hi Im new here, didnt get a chance to post this Wolfrog here cause I rushed to finish it in time, it was a one day job just for fun. So any critique or comments would be appreciated and I can take them into consideration on the next painting :). Ive always enjoyed CA and I decided I wanted to take part in the challenges and maybe do a sketchbook so I joined.
