So my Missing Link is somewhere between a snow leopard and a mountain goat. I thought it would be good to combine predator and prey.

Artist: BlackRobin

Concept: Crustachepoid
The Crustachephoid is the missing link between crustaceans and cephalopods, it is speculated that crustaceans evolved from into cephalopods millions of years ago and crustacephoids is one of the transition species in the evolution.
It retains the exoskeleton of crustaceans which soffens from the cephalus to the thorax and at the end of the thorax it developed arms and siphons we can find on modern octopus.
Its main diet are smaller fish and occasinally other crustaceans, and method of hunting is by using its arms and it feeds by using smallers pods and a pair of beaks on its head

Artist: Hyptosis

Concept: Octophant

Named so because of it's 8 appendages... tail included... >_>

I tried to pick two animals that have nothing in reality in common but look like they could. So I though, well a trunk is a bit like a tentacle, and both animals are considered to be very smart. They both communicate with each other in unconventional ways as well, rather than just a call or something like most animals. I developed the shape of the head or body of the octopus to infact be the body of the elephant.

Also, these guys are brilliant bottle openers. You can put a peanut in a bottle, and they'll smash it right open with their foot... yeah, you thought they'd unscrew the lid didn't you. =P Look at those feet!

Concept: Polar Saw Bear
Polar Saw Bear, the missing link between the Saw Fish and Polar Bear, before one went to the sea and the other to land.
He uses his snout to detect prey beneath the ice, then cuts a hole and scoops them out. They then use the snout to flick the food into the air and catch it in their mouth. This manner of fishing and capture is only used if the Polar Saw Bear chooses not to go into the sea to seek out fish and seals with its swimming and slicing skills.
When the Polar Saw Bear is in mating season, their fur upon the belly turns a bright shade of orange salmon red towards the other male competition. When courting a female, he will also display this colour along with a freshly killed fish.

Concept: The Mandrillo
This creature is the awkward cross between a mandrill and an armadillo. It can be aggressive and defensive, displaying its large sharp canines often to intimidate its enemy, and retreating into its armored body to escape large predators. It eats both vegetation and small prey.

Concept: Velocilope
The missing link between the Velociraptor and the Pronghorn Antelope.

Native to open grass and shrub land, Velocilopes are Omnivorous, feeding mostly on shrubs and supplementing their diet with the occasional mouse or small lizard.

Capable of reaching 60 mph in short bursts, they are the fastest bipedal animals. While they would rather run from predators, they are capable of dealing deadly kicks using their sickle like claws for defense.

Concept: Squicar
A cross between the North American Red Squirrel and the Cardinal. It is fierce and aggressive towards both squirrels and birds. Its diet consists of berries, nuts and seeds that either red squirrel or cardinal would eat. Because of its aggressive nature it does not like other animals living in its territory that use the same food sources. It has been known to kill baby birds if it finds their nests and they are not protected.

I was strict this time regarding the quality check, dunno it was about time for that i think :)

There won't be a next round for 1 week, because there is something bigger coming along on 12th May, where COW is involved, so relax and prepare for this week :)

I was thinking of mainly of the one of the guidelines in particular when voting.
The guideline about not just mix match parts from different creatures.

I feel, however, that this is what most people have done.

I voted for Blackrobin. While it does resembles an octopus, I believe that the design is a functional creature, and fills the spot of being a link between two species, without being a blatant blending of two specific animals.

I voted for EricT: Sharkosaurus Rex because for my opinion it's the most logical missing link, and it's like it almost really could've been. And the picture is quite intensive.

Great piece.

Too bad he didnt do the snail-lion though. :P

Voted for Markito.. love the design and vibrant colours. If I could have voted for more than one, my second vote would have gone to Adele which is also really cool.

Thumbs up to everyone else participating!

I love the perspective and mood in it.
Absolutely amazing work!

I went for coldrum; gorgeous piece. I loved the whole mouth area, especially... it really has that sort of pale-but-freckly, puffed look of an alligator. The colors are subtle.

Voted Coldrum. Blackrobin and hyptosis also had good designs, but Coldrum made the best overall image.
Besides, now my Crocopotamus (http://conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1241965&postcount=137) finally has a mate!

coldrum's pic is definitely the strongest rendering, but I put my vote behind blackrobin for favorite creature design

Hybrid_75's a favorite too

I voted for Coldrum, the picture itself is very accomplished and lovely.

I will say though that if I had two votes, as an idea/concept, I really liked Hybrid-75's batpig... in many ways I think its a creature that could exist while still being a more surprising combination of creatures. I feel like it's getting overlooked because its just black and white, but it's a lovely render, the pose is great and the concept is solid based on the topic.

Although I didn't participate this round because of being so busy with the CHOW amongst other things, I did vote for Coldrum. I really like the over all piece and the sketches were off the hook. I agree with Mike Jaecks on the fact that Hybrid-75's "Batpig" is being over looked. I thought the batpig was an excellent render no doubt. In a matter of fact when the batpig was in its beggining stages I thought that it was being rendered in a program like zbrush. Awesome work!

really like the creature coldrum designed and the rendering of it, though I have to admit I prefered the original sketch as it had much more motion and power in my mind.

It was hard for me to decide between Coldrum and Hybrid_75, they are both so beautifully rendered, but I ended up choosing Coldrum, because if the perspective and that eerie freakin' background. :D

Vote goes to EricT. it has a good concept and great picture, very believable.

My vote goes to Coldrum because I really like the focus on the head area and I cant stop looking at the mouth, its great...unfortunately my friend clicked my name while I was away from my computer...so you all have the right to call me a stupid lame moron on this thread and Fozzy can give it to Coldrum...:nohope:
My next vote would of gone to fury03, because I really like the creature and the lighting and markito cos its cute! oh and illgnosis cos it looks like it would exist and its pretty nasty looking..and nice colour too.
This was really fun, cant wait for the next one!

cheers!

voted for EricT. cheers. I mean what could be better than a Sharkosaurus Rex!? just an amazing concept.

May 5th, 2008, 10:39 PM
I voted for EricT's. I think it's a very moody piece, and combining two ancient predators seems like a natural fit. Coldrum's is also amazing, but the concept just doesn't work for me quite as well.

I also think illgnosis and Hybrid_75 had cool designs.

I voted for illgnosis, I really liked the predator/prey idea, and I think it looked like something you could find in nature. Was a tough choice between his and fury03's.

I liked Coldrums and Blackrobins the most, voted for Coldrum cause of strong concept, rendering and composition. Seemed to cover all the bases.

this was fun, wonder whats up next.

Hey Hybrid 75 cheers for the vote : D I really liked yours but thought the composition kind of let it down slightly.. this is of course my own personal opinion but thought I'd do a quick paintover to show you what I mean... hope you dont mind me doing so.. the wings would look cool pushed forward more like he's almost stopping mid air to crab some pray... but you get the idea. He's got a really great face btw.

Hybrid_75
May 6th, 2008, 01:12 AM
thanks coldrum, looks way better like that and I don't mind at all btw. yeah I shoulda worked more ideas for the comp, I have a little problem of concentrating on anatomical details at the expence of working through compositional ideas and the like. But thats why I'm on conceptart.org , learning to make better art. cheers.

May 6th, 2008, 02:53 AM
good stuff this round I hope to be joining in more.

My first choice would have been coldrum.. but since that entry was running way out front by the time I got to vote I decided to go for adele's Polar Saw bear. It (adele's) has so much personality and I really like the concept.
As for critique I would say looking at your sketchbook you have a very solid grasp of form (and some other really cool takes on the creature) but you are not showing it in the painting. Throw a multiply layer over it and erase out to to experiment with a stronger light source and with all that very reflective snow you get some good opportunities for reflected light to really define form. Try it without thinking too much of the fur texture, get the light pattern clear and then go back and add texture where it needs it. Look at some bear ref casue even with all that fur you get some nice bone projections to break up all of those round forms.

Adele, mindlesspuppet : ty for the kind words. :)

My vote goes to Coldrum. nice rendering ,so many other great works. Adele,Hybrid awesome the wip totally looked like a 3d render like zbrush. Coldrums paint over is a really good suggestion, the dynamic totally makes it a different painting. Looking forward to the next one. Hopefully I will have more time to spend on environment and rendering. Any crits on mine would be greatly appreciated, maybe even a paint over? Obviously the background lacks.

Adele
May 6th, 2008, 06:09 AM
illgnosis, thanks for your time and advice...if i get a moment ill give it a go :D

Azathoth I think you could take the same advice illgnosis gave me, using lighting to strengthen the character and looking at more bear references...looking at your character again, its sooooo cute...for a spiderface! lol

Coldrum would have to get my vote. I love the composition, choice of colors but yet not too detailed or busy. Adele would have to run 2nd in my opinion. It was a great idea with use of some great color but seemed not as polished.

Hybrid_75 - great idea and execution.

May 6th, 2008, 02:24 PM
Going purely by sheer technical skill, I would have to choose Coldrum. The rendering of the scaly hide is magnificent and highly realistic, adding to the overall believability of the piece. However, I could not in good conscience vote for it based simply on that, and so I chose EricT's "Sharkosaurus Rex" instead. The work is just so fantastically suggestive, conjuring images of primordial continents being swallowed up by an unforgiving tide and displaying this harsh landscape's dominant predator in all its savage glory. I really feel life radiating from the creature, whereas Coldrum's "Rinogator" is in a pose that is far too static for my liking. In any event, I congratulate the two of you for a job very well done.

I voted for Coldrum, yeah, seems like everyone else did as well. It's killer. I also liked the Shark-rex.

I want to give some love to Hybrid, because I loved his render and thought it came out really well, and I enjoyed seeing the progress of the piece. I think Coldrums piece had a little more power behind it though.

Anyway, I think everyone did pretty good jobs XD

I vote for Hyptosis' because it looks like a creature that could have been walking the earth and I like the style and colour. Only if it had some more contrast and strenght... Great image, anyway.
And Coldrum, woah, that image should be in a Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual. But I think like some people here, the first pose was much more dinamic and the snaillion rocks. :)

Wonderful entries this week, congrat's too all of you =)

My vote went to Adele because I felt in love with the concept and execution. The rendering may not be as awesome as Coldrum's or EricT's but still fairly good, but it's really the fun concept who managed to grab my vote =)
