Hello all. This is a piece for my college's alum exhibition. This year, the theme is pink. I'm going for a sort of evil overlord dominatrix/babydoll princess kind of thing. :)
This is a rough pencil composite of the piece. Each element will be inked and scanned in seperately so I can easily control the value and opacity of the different planes.
i'm not quite satisfied with this 1st composition. i think it needs a train that snakes away into the lower corner but i'm not sure. (this is suggested messily in the 2nd composition) any thoughts?

great picture...very Alice in Wonderland..my onlt crit would be..or observation- is I think the legs look better in the color study..in the sketch they seem a little too bulky ..also I think the train would break up the monotony of space nicely.
.promises to be a nice piece
incidently..was looking at your site..very nice work... I particularly like portrait of Door..I just finished Neverwhere

Her lips seem a bit dark in relation to the rest of her. She is so light and... pink! I would like to see the red shade in the lips brought out to other places (kinda like a pink gothic thing), or toned down to match the rest of her (which is already very nice).
Either way, I likes the thought! Can't wait to see it come together some more!

I'm going to disagree with Roeguard, here, on the value of the lips. Keeping them dark, and therefore in contrast to the otherwise pale nature of her skin and overall color scheme, could add a point of focus to the image itself... She, of course, is going to be the focus of the piece, and I've no idea what the colors of her surroundings are going to be. If things are of darker, contrasting colors, then I could maybe see not having such a stark contrast on her face, but on the other hand, if the whole place is in the same scheme (light hues, not necessarily pinks, that is), then she's definitely going to want to have something to draw attention to that striking face of hers.
My only question about the train is to ask why it's trailing off down to the left if she appears to be walking in from the right. Perhaps she's just turned around and it's following her motion?
And, personally, I like her legs in all the drawings, sketch, color, or otherwise. ;)
Jenn, you know I love your work like I love Gaiman's writing. Your show's going to seriously kick if you keep this up. :)

Looking good so far. :D
I were wondering if the bunny-soldier couldnt salute the dominatrix/princess?
Iīm not sure about the railroad-tracks. Maybe U could get the same expression if U made the fence in a little perspective? Theres so much things already (and thats nice of course :) ) but it may kill the whole thing if theres to much.
Ah! I donīt know - the color will decide it later.
Be careful of those knees and thighs and maybe do some studies of high-heeels to crank those up a notch. HER right shoe loks a little cluncy and the feets/legs are a bit to tangled into eavh-other (edit - itīs good in a way to because it kind of shows her "strutting" walk), U might want to check into that.
Hmm, that become a longer list than I thought it would, but thats only because I think it can be that great!!! :D
Gime an update soon!!! :D

Ooh... am I right and the cuffs on her ankles are actually separate from her shoes (and what shoes they are!) and her stockings? I hadn't noticed that before, in the roughs...
Love the flats, can't wait to see the piece with highlights and shadows.

Looking lovely! Maybe you could throw in some hints of other contrasting colors in some places, just to make it more interesting ;)

cadence,
yes, i think i plan to use alot of subtle greens in the shadows and reflected light and such. i will try to work some more color in elsewhere too.
and killing.people, you have no idea!

i dunno, maybe it is just me by i like that roughed color sketch alot. it has more emotion to it than the fully like rendered portion. i even like the refined pencil sketch alot better as well. i'll leave my actual comments on the refined digital till i see something with more rendering since you said you were going to do that.

hi. small update. still flatting. don't worry. i plan to do my best to seperate the different planes despite color similarities. i hope to finish the piece this weekend.
and DeadSprite, i will do what i can to put some life back into the piece with my rendering. but i also have been planning to take another stab at my pencil/digital style in a finished piece soon. so far, i've been using it only for sketches.

Have you thought about making it a "smokier" version of the regular color values? Sort of how it would be if the "open" spaces in the railing were instead made of a thick/semi-opaque glass or glass-like material? You've already got a bit of a "hazy" look to it as it stands now... playing that up might add some contrast to the foreground and background of the piece, perhaps. Then again, I don't know what the piece will look like once you've gotten all the values and shadows into it where you want them...

The only question I have on it is, given the light source, should portions of the buildings on the left be a bit darker?
Looks great, Jenn!

Hi, I have one question on your piece.
Why does the small path on the ground look like part of her dress? Is it ? or is it part of the ground? If it is part of her dress, seems like it could be a little less sheer or maybe match the pink from the dress more, or maybe not. By the way, I just absolutely love it too, I think it's freakin awesome

hey! thanks for the comments all! i think i'm about ready to call it done. unless someone comes up with any good reasons why i should think otherwise.
Duchess, yeah, it's a transparent train thingie that's part of her dress. hope it's not too unclear. i'm glad you like it though! :)
