As you know blue and orange are complimentary colors and when mixed they create brown. what you could try to do is go from orange to red and then mix the blue which will make purple and then from purple go blue and if you have clouds that are reflecting the orange onto the blue wait for the paint to dry. Are you using oil or acrylic?

I'm using acrylics on a thick, paper material.

ok well acrylic is good because it dries quickly...but sometimes that is a problem as well because its tough to blend. another method is do a dry brush technigue. let the orange dry and then with a very small amount of blue and a dry brush scrape it across where you want the blend. Do you have a reference to work from or are you just painting from your head?

If you're having trouble with acrylics drying too quickly, you can pick up an acrylic matte medium or retarder. Mix that in with the paint and it should give you that extra time to blend.
