heya all!
way over in the sketches forum i posted aobut wanting to create (start) a concept art sketchbook that could work like this- we would create a list of people interested, and thier locations. i would start by buying a good quality sketchbook and doing a drawing in it.then i would send it to the next person on the list (list would be dont by geographic location) who would do a drawing, send it to the next, etc, etc. each person would pay for it to be shipped to the next, though well try to keep it so there will be a limited number of long-sends (ie over the atlantic) shipping is relativly cheap, though. there seemed to be alot of enthusiasm for this and it was suggested i post it here. so, here i am!
there are only a coupla rules that we thought would be prudent:
-tastfull nudity only
-one page per artist (unless colaberating with another)
-no messing with already finished art.(though incorperating the page next to yours is okay)
anybody whos up for this let me know, im REALLY bad with HTML so if anyone can help set up a page with The List on it (to track progress) that would be great.
word!

They did something like this on Shaneglines forum, im not sure if it ever took off tho.

but i'd be happy to participate on this!

oh yea one question, what happens when it's filled up? who gets the book, does it get auctioned off or thunderdome prize or what?

satire
October 7th, 2003, 07:21 PM
we were thinking at the end we could either make copies and sell them (either through a self publishing place or kinkos) or we could auciton it off and donate the money. an idea i just came up with is that at the end i could high-res scan the whole thing and keep it archived (here as well as my computer) and i could send copies on cdr's to people who wanted them, or something.

anybody who doesnt think "thier skill is high enough" ~ dont worry about it! you could always jsut do a 1/4 page or something, or leave a little note on it saying "feel free to elaborate on this drawing"

when u are finished with your sketchbook page, put your name and location on the page as well- it would be cool to go from page to page seeing the actual route of the book right on there!

Something like this is going on with 1000 books. Check out http://www.1000journals.com. But don't plan on trying to get one of these books sent to you. I've been on the list forever and there doesn't appear to be a chance of me getting one of the books anytime soon.

Maybe we could get a few books going around. Not 1000, but maybe two or three, cause it seems like there are alot of anxious people here :)

Oh, and if any help is needed with the website, I'd be happy to help out.

October 9th, 2003, 02:19 PM
ya! help with the website would be greatly apreciated, the more the merrier! this could be many peoples project, not just mine. ive made up a map of the US with the (VERY first draft, as im hoping to get many more names *hint hint*) route that will be taken by the book. i am buying the sketchbook today, and i will do a sketch in it, and i have a coupla friends around here (one is our very own JAYMZ) who have agreed (okay, im still waiting to hear form jaymz) to do a sketch in the book, so that will give us a coupla weeks or les to wait for more addresses to show up in The List. after that i hope to have someone make a chart with The List on it, anf pointing out where the book is currently. BAT is being a really cool person and helping out with the site, but any other help would be greatly apreciated. he has also vollenteerd to pay for oversees shipping when it gets to that point, so that might govern which route the book will take through the US unless someone else volleteers (someone on the east coast maybe?) anywho, ill stop rambling and go get The Book!

The official site hasn't been uploaded yet, but the temp site is: http://www.freewebs.com/casketch/index.htm . after throwing my back out yesterday picking up a cat of all things, the page will get spiffier as I can be at the computer more, it is a bit Spartan right now. After each person gets their page done, if they could email me a scan at: forvalaka @ cableone.net (spaces just added to avoid excess spammage) I will amend the page and add a 'mirror' of the hardcopy book online.

i bought a sketchbook!

im fairly happy with it. it is letter size (9x12), 75lb paper ( i was hoping for thicker paper but i cant seem to find any hardbound sketchbooks with thicker paper than that) and its spiral bound. since there are 75 sheets in it what i think we will do is you will get to do BOTH sides of ONE sheet of paper. we will hold a contest or something to see who gets to do the cover/s (hows that sound?)

skrubbles
October 9th, 2003, 09:28 PM
wouldn't it be better to have each artist do 2 pages? meaning... the back of one page (left) and the front of another page (right)... that way each artist gets their on spread... but the only flaw with having one full page (your idea) or having the spread is that if there's an artist that only does one side it kinda fucks up the format of the sketchbook.

hmm

Anto
October 9th, 2003, 09:50 PM
good ideas
thanks for gettin the sketchbook satire and the site bat - this things really startin to move

what about having the option of doing 1 or 2 right side pages - this way if inks happen to bleed through to the back of the page it wont ruin someone elses spread
may read better that way too
this should be fine considering you got a 75 page sketchbook, as well as someone mentioning starting a second one

i say the more the better!

nice

satire
October 9th, 2003, 11:16 PM
thats why i didnt opt for the spread option, cuz of the chance of ruining someone elses. the pages are pretty thick so i think the only thing that would bleed through are alchohol-based markers (ie sharpie pens) so as long as were carefull not to use those...
i htink the spread would be the best idea. if anyone wants to give me more ideas, feel free.

YES! thats 33 people involved! that means each person will get ONE page (front and back) or one SPREAD (1 side on 2 pages, next to each other) i think the guidline will be if you are using just pens (not markers) and pencil, you may do a SPREAD. if you are using heavier media, which is more likely to bleed through, you may only do a page. oviously, that leaves some left over. if you feel you would like to do 2 pages, email or PM me with a link to your work.
some new rules that someone pointed out to me:
try to FILL your page (ie that means you might have to do a backround) it doesnt have to be exact, just not a tiny doodle in the middle of the page.
No fan or copywrited art, just to be safe.

This is a point that is very valid. While your location is not a problem, some people will need to pay more in shipping. I have volunteered to send from the US to anywhere, however, other people will have to do this as well. It's not fair because some people can meet and hand it off or send the book for about US$4 to each other here, but life isn't fair and a few of us will have to shoulder a little extra responsibility. This cannot be helped, and the end result, an international sketchbook, I feel will be worth a few extra dollars.

Anyone have any idea how long this is gonna take? The Shane Glines book project was going to take a couple of years i think, with 1 week for everyone. 33 people with 1 week a piece would already be 8 months, give or take a week or so. One solution proposed on the Shane Glines boards was multiple books if memory serves me correct (and it probably doesnt). Anyway it was just a concern that i think needs to be addressed before everyone gets all excited. Any thoughts people?

Josh, that is another valid concern and I can only hope that everyone can get a scan to me so that we can keep a virtual copy of the sketchbook going until it gets to everyone. Ideally everyone can get their sketch into the book and have it moving along within a week's time.

since there seems to be such a concern about shipping it to europe at the moment and some people think it might be a good idea to start more than one book, maybe one of our european friends would be willing to start a book there. then later on down the line, when the book in North America has made it around the states, canada and any other place it is asked for it could then be shipped to europe. Meanwhile, the people in europe will have the same opportunity to draw in a sketchbook without having to wait so long. after that one has mad it around that continent for awhile send it to the states. this will reduce the number of times a book has to cross the ocean, and the cost of it. it also reduces the waiting time because i know a lot of people are eager to get to their page. i also know that their are people in countries other than those in NAmerica and Europe. maybe someone in Korea, Japan or the Philipines wants to start one.

if this is a possibility, maybe we should select a date say six months from now, and on that date, no matter where it is, it should be shipped to the next continent. and six months after that to the next, so on and so forth.

just a thought.

by the way, i'm on the map now.

PM satire your address and that should work. Is it cheaper to send from one European country to another? It isn't that much to send overseas from the US, which is why I ask. I am not sure how satire feels, but I feel it would be better to keep everything in one book, however, I will go with the consensus. Everyone just make sure to send me a scan of their page so I can upload it to the virtual sketchbook.

i would like to keep everything in one book if possible, (since there are only 7 people in europe so far) another possiblity is the book could START in europe and come back. my dad comes to the states from london once a month (a lotk, i know!) so i could just GIVE the book to him to take over to avoid shipping costs, even though it wont be that much. i jsut used a postal calculator and...guess what? for a one pound parcel (thats how much the book weighs) its about 15 bucks from the states to wales 9the first stop on the europe list) and it would take about a week to get there (4-6 days, it says on the site). i would also pay for international shipping.

i want to say right now, this project depends alot on trust and if you dont think you can handle the shipping costs, or dont want to pay, please tell me.

well, it might work like that anyways, if people do the pages in consecutive order. you dont have to, though.
infinitipo is getting it next, i belive. still in CA- the book will be here for about 4 or 5 more stops.

if anyone has some spare time to help create a page, all the help i get would be greatly apreciated. what i need is at the very least a good looking front page where i can easily post the latest art (and thumbnails of past art), a page where i can post The List and show where the book is now. i think i can get some free code for some forums. again, any help would be apreciated.

oh- and there will be a contest for who gets to do the covers of the book, with something permanent like paints. at the end of the list the book will be shipped to the winner who will do the covers. if you want to enter to do the covers, either email or post a sketch of your idea (rough sketches OK). it doesnt neccesarily have to say "concept art sketchbook" but should convey the idea that the book is (and how it is) traveling somehow.

sound good? first place will be the front cover, second the back cover, third the inside front, and fourth the inside back. tell me if this sounds to wierd or if you think its a bad idea.

One thing that might be cool to include on the website, besides scans of the pages (obviously), would be to include photos of the book itself (cover, etc), photos of people working in the book, places the book has been, basically any random images having to do with the book. So feel free to take additional photos of/with the book and post them here or e-mail them to me: mike@roboticblue.com

And just a note on the scans of the pages... keeping the scan dimensions proportional to the page dimensions would help alot. It doesn't matter if it's horizontally or vertically aligned.. just try to send/post scans that are proportional.

Alright guys.. here it is (http://www.roboticblue.com/sketchbook)...

It's not entirely done, but you get the idea. So what do you think? I'm basically looking for initial thoughts (love it/it's ok/it sucks, start over), as well as technical feedback, like if you're having trouble viewing it in any particular browser, something looks funny, etc. Some things won't work for good reason, like the links to the Artist List and Contact, because those pages haven't been created yet.

Also keep in mind that the page may look a bit empty right now, but as more updates and images are sent in, things will fill up nicely.

The lines are definitely not accurate... I need to get the list from satire of the people receiving the book and their locations and I'll redraw the map.

Glad you guys like the site. :)

helix7 - the site looks great!

I'm looking forward to the updates (and the sketchbook getting over to me, of course!)

so.... uhhh... where's the book?

William b. Hand
December 5th, 2003, 06:19 PM
Yeah, where IS the book now? I don't think the site (http://www.roboticblue.com/sketchbook/) is telling us (shouldn't it?)...

It'd be nice to know that the book's on its way to us.
Is there a difficulty in figuring the mailing order due to some logistical puzzle?
It'd be good to see The whole schedule, too... showing just who has contributed and who is waiting still. The anticipation of seeing that you're only one or two stops down the line would be funn!

Also, how was el coro's image achieved? Was that created in the computer and then printed out and glued into the book, or is that all done with guash and markers right smack on the pages?

These three images are a good strong start, that's fer sure. Darn tootin'.

those are pure traditional goodness, mister hand. yeah, it would be good to know where the book is...how many people have hit it as of yet?-c36

hey coro,
when you use the ink washes in your sketchbooks, do they bleed thru? cuz when i use just markers in my sketch books they bleed thru a bit.
is there a trick to stopping the bleed?
cuz id like to try your technique, and if i get good at it ill try it in the bookwhen gets to me

You could always put scrap paper under your current sheet to keep it from getting to the next page. It would depend on the thickness, type, quality of the paper if it went thru the opposite side of the same sheet. Right? I wouldnt really know.

YO GANG. I am truely truely sorry. The sketchbook is still here with me in San Fran. I finished up my piece not too long ago, then got sucked into some family problems back in wisconsin, and then finals, and crap. Stuff wasnt going to good around here for me, and I completely forgot to send the book on its way. I have it packed up and ready to go, and I will be sending it out on Monday afternoon. Again, I am really sorry about delaying the book like this.

Peace
Matt

Ahhh, wow, el coro's entry is amazing... definitely not the type of stuff you'd see in my sketchbook... come to think of it...I can't even remember a time I've used trational coloring means. Maybe I'll try taking part some day.

well i think were using the front and the back of each page..so thats why im wondering

Skank : yeah, thats the only way. i like using piece of cardstock paper, so as that it catches everything. i used two pages, since i'm a bookhog. haha, but seriously, you can do both sides, what i ususally do is do the front, then look at the back, and use the shapes on the back to create something different. its a good exercise...

Sinix: you really should try to have some understanding of coloring by traditional means. there's something about mixing paint, scumbling colors on top of eachother, and whatnot, that makes it so m,uch more intimate and satisfying than digital media, in my humble opinion. also i apply alot of what i know in terms of traditional media toward my digital stuff, and vice versa. the color picker in painter has taught me alot about mixing paint in the real world as well. they feed off eachother...well sort of...

mtomczek: mail that shit homie! hope all is well with you.-c36

As far as I know, the book isn't going to anyplace in the southern hemispheres, so I didn't see the need for those areas of the world.

And as already mentioned, I know the map is far from accurate. I didn't spend much time on it because I don't have all the info I need to make a proper map, like the order people will be getting the book in, and where they are located. The entire map will be redrawn once I have the list.

Also, the site will not stay at the current URL. It will be moved to another URL once it is totally complete.

i spose noone can steal the book when it gets to them, cos everyone will know who it is. I hope people have the integrity to keep sending it on. Ima take some photos when i get it, maybe spend the night in bed with it, then pass it on.

Bad karma if you held on to something that belongs to so many people. Baaaad karma XD\

Cant wait till it gets down this way, but itll be a while

so uhhhhh.... where is this book and when is it getting to san d?

this thing started in october, it's already january, and by my calculations it's only gotten to 3 people. at this rate it might be completed by 2010.

someone might want to start another book in europe, cuz who knows when this will make it there.

also, just wondering what the website is for the sketchbook. thanks.
