I've been doing life drawing classes twice a week in the evenings and I'd like to get some advice on these please as drawing good quality characters isn't usually my forté. :D

I like your use of shading. Very good work. Looks like your faces are a bit overworked. Maybe use a little bit less linework to develop the facial features. I am having the same problem right now.

HI there,

Just a couple quick points that I can see:

1) The head/neck/shoulder of the first picture seems a bit off to me. Also, you've cropped her toes off. This cropping of the body parts also happens in the second picture, but in this case it's not as noticable because the arm isn't rendered with the same detail as the body (unlike with the foot in the first picture). To correct this, I'd suggest taking a few minutes at the start of the pose and measure off yothe height and width of the pose and mark the boundaries lightly on your paper.

2) In both pictures, there isn't a real focal point and your images are 'glowing' because of of all the white. Squint your eyes and really look at the model to find the location of your 3-4 values. Look for the true core and cast shadows and use contrast between your darkest dark and your white at the focal point.

Keep at it though because the above issues are easily correctable.

Lookin' good man! My only crit would be in the first one, watch the foreshortening in the left hip/upper leg.

I feel those two lines really flatten the form. I feel all the other forshortened forms work better because you show overlapping form with your lines.

Good stuff though. I really like the second one, it's obvious you put a lot of care into these. Post more! :)

The naughty Conceptart.org server hasn't been emailing me about subscribed threads, so I just assumed this went off the page with 0 replies. :p

van: Yep, I agree, they are a bit overdone. Thanks. :)

dzu: Cheers for the anatomy and composition tips. The reason the first is cropped is that I had a bit of trouble scanning the pic in. I might try just rubbing some powdered graphite into the paper to get a medium hue and work from there.

Tedsuo: Thanks for the paintover. I was noticed the sharpness of the lines when I was doing it but didn't correct it for some reason. Must've got carried away.
