Last Man Standing 3 - Round 1 / Matches 25-48

Polish up that hefty set of brass balls, ladies and gentlemen, because they're about to be plucked out of your pink little hands by the freshest crop of entrants. Out of pure masochistic pleasure and a loathing for spending my free time wisely, Last Man Standing lives on through year 3 in what promises to be its most massive cycle yet.

A planned 360 contenders (not counting pussouts) over 4 rounds. 456 new pieces of artwork. 1 winner. And not one 1-on-1 battle. Shit is going to get intense.

The complete listing of LMS3 Round One matches can be found here:
http://www.lastmanart.com/lms3/round01

Topic: Underneath It All

The topic, as always, is completely open to interpretation, allowing for you to visualize your concept through any subject matter you deem fit. This is an illustration-based contest, and you will be expected to turn in a completed piece that stands on its own without the aid of a description. Both traditional and digital mediums can be used, but the majority of your piece must be painted/drawn with little use of photography and 3D modeling.

Round Breakdown (links to discussion threads):
Round 1 (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1534573) - 360 competitors in 72 matches of 5 / 72 advance
Round 2 - 72 competitors in 18 matches of 4 / 18 advance
Round 3 - 18 competitors in 6 matches of 3 / 6 advance
Final Round - 6 men enter, one man leaves...

Judging: Every round will be judged by an incredibly talented group of judges... the list is still being finalized, but it will be a relatively static panel throughout the competition. Each piece will be judged based on technical execution, creativity in the interpretation of the topic, and overall impact. All judges decisions are final. No whining!

Judging Panel:
Aleksi Briclot
Rob Carney
Brian Despain
Dan Dos Santos
Irene Gallo
Jon Foster
Gregory Manchess
JS Rossbach

Important note about the thread layout:
There is one match in every post. The entries correspond as follows:

User1 vs User2 vs User3

Image1 is User1
Image2 is User2
Image3 is User3

Users listed in White have PUSSED OUT.

That about does it for the intro. On to matches 25-48 of the 3rd Last Man Standing thunderdome.

January 22nd, 2008, 06:20 PM
Woo another fab set of images. Aly throws down the gauntlet, I see, great piece, as always, and yay for my round all getting images in!

Mr Chan, I think i love you, awesome image (ha, like it would have been anything else).

Other stand outs on first glance, Dominus, gorgeous colours, becard, probably the nicest mermaid piece i've seen across the three threads, beautiful rendering, Kenji, I think this piece takes the biscuit for me, I absolutely adore it, and as a reservist too! bdfoster, I love your take on the subject, beautifully done, Anthony Foti, another original portrayal of the theme, nicely done indeed, and rambozo, I keep coming back to your piece for it's composition and powerful emotion, lovely stuff.

This first round has produced some seriously epic art, guys, congrats to all who finished!

Edit: and inverted chalupa, you just made me blush crimson. I can't agree with you, but thank you! (where'd the dang thank button go??)

0kelvin- The best of this bunch, by far. Every inch of it has something fun happening, and it's all made better by the fact that this is pixel art. Such a beautiful and fun image.
Atmospheria- Gorgeous image. I'm not sure what that white band on the cliff is supposed to be, but this is a beautifully painted image nonetheless.
fvallejo- Exquisite lineart. The top-down view was a nice choice.
Matt Dixon- Ooh! More pixels! Very fun image.
Poshspice- Great image. The 10 cent sticker and the little scribbles and wear-and-tear marks are really nice touches.
Jason Chan- Tentacles and a pretty girl, what a surprise!:P Lovely painting. The suction cups and the flowing fabric are very well done.
Also liked mysticaldonkey, john bivens, snowsfall, emily g, vyle, oyo, and mike dutton. Major props to everyone who finished!

Tempor: I LOVE the bottom portion of your piece. I'm not feeling the cyclops robots though. The bottom portion is so calm and mysterious, then the robots cheese it up. I would have rather seen some huge architecture dwarfing the man, or some strange natural formations. The bottom/foreground though... beautiful. I'll have to check out your stuff if you have any more online.

Bumskee: very moody. love it.

Yes. I love the story created by 0kelvin. I think we were somewhere on the same wave length - telling a story that kept going as the viewer scrolled down the page. I'm really surprised more people didn't do that. I thought it was such an obvious idea.

Glad, though, that they didn't.

Here are a few comments for the pieces that stood out for me in this thread. I'd have loved to be able to comment on all of them but alas, there are only so many hours in a day.

entroid - Haha, love it!
James Kei - Great designs and a funny concept.
nonie - I'm not sure where the Underneath It All theme ties in, but I do like the image quite a bit.
RagnarX - Nice concept and well executed. Very funny.
Mike Dutton - I like this one a lot.
HellTaxi - You pulled this picture off really well. The story is well told, and the cracked mirror is a nice touch.
Summer Pudding - Great work as always.
emily g - It seems a lot of people did the water reflection thing, but yours is by far my favourite.
fvallejo - Nice! Super-stylish!
Matt Dixon - Aw man, soooooo cool. I love this, it's definitely one of my favourites.
texahol - Nice work man. You're making a ton of progress!
PoshSpice - Your stuff is always wonderful. The little cover details are just perfect, I can just imagine finding that book at a garage sale or flea market.
Zephyri - Great work.
Jason Chan - Fantastic.
Dirty C - Haha, oh man...
sve - Really nice work. Very adorable.
steak-tron - Very cool! I love the vac-u-formed effect.

Tell me my mistakes buddy, if you want to help me..
That's very nice of you but I see so many mistakes in mine and I suspect there are many more.
I finally on the second day got the humor of yours... I'm slow :( and I'm not a games lover. but I got it finally :). hehe pirates' treasure chest is so close to the core of Earth, to the hell, subways don't go there... no hope.
I wonder what city is exactly on the opposite side of the Earth to Eskimo's land. My daughter said it is Tokyo... but I don't know :).probably South Pole :). I want to go visit South Pole then :).

Earth in your vision is different in thickness in some parts than another.... hahahah.
I like the zombies riding ants... wow those ants... Yeah, insects survived us all.

As I said you before... great sense of humor in your art work. it will survive us all together with insects :).
I like Yin and yang in the center of the whole things running in circles around nuclear energy...

I mean equal sizes and/or dimensions. What I notice is that smaller rendered works to be displayed on the pages get overshadowed simply by the larger seemingly so uncompressed pieces. In a fair world we are all looked at equally to see who is very much different. this competition does not seem to exemplify this and in general makes the competition useless in determining who is.

I truly hope the judging is not being done by just looking at these threads...
