Last Man Standing 3 - Round 1 / Matches 1-24

Polish up that hefty set of brass balls, ladies and gentlemen, because they're about to be plucked out of your pink little hands by the freshest crop of entrants. Out of pure masochistic pleasure and a loathing for spending my free time wisely, Last Man Standing lives on through year 3 in what promises to be its most massive cycle yet.

A planned 360 contenders (not counting pussouts) over 4 rounds. 456 new pieces of artwork. 1 winner. And not one 1-on-1 battle. Shit is going to get intense.

The complete listing of LMS3 Round One matches can be found here:
http://www.lastmanart.com/lms3/round01

Topic: Underneath It All

The topic, as always, is completely open to interpretation, allowing for you to visualize your concept through any subject matter you deem fit. This is an illustration-based contest, and you will be expected to turn in a completed piece that stands on its own without the aid of a description. Both traditional and digital mediums can be used, but the majority of your piece must be painted/drawn with little use of photography and 3D modeling.

Round Breakdown (links to discussion threads):
Round 1 (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1534573) - 360 competitors in 72 matches of 5 / 72 advance
Round 2 - 72 competitors in 18 matches of 4 / 18 advance
Round 3 - 18 competitors in 6 matches of 3 / 6 advance
Final Round - 6 men enter, one man leaves...

Judging: Every round will be judged by an incredibly talented group of judges... the list is still being finalized, but it will be a relatively static panel throughout the competition. Each piece will be judged based on technical execution, creativity in the interpretation of the topic, and overall impact. All judges decisions are final. No whining!

Judging Panel:
Aleksi Briclot
Rob Carney
Brian Despain
Dan Dos Santos
Irene Gallo
Jon Foster
Gregory Manchess
JS Rossbach

Important note about the thread layout:
There is one match in every post. The entries correspond as follows:

User1 vs User2 vs User3

Image1 is User1
Image2 is User2
Image3 is User3

Users listed in White have PUSSED OUT.

That about does it for the intro. On to matches 1-24 of the 3rd Last Man Standing thunderdome.

Wow, great stuff! Easily the best first round I've seen in the LMS competitions. I lost my round, everyone turned in great entries. Beelow's was cool, I like anything sci-fi, Burtzman's was simply beautiful, and hats of to stevekim! Fuck man, that piece is awesome! At least I'll come in before Coits...because they didn't hand anything in.

Great work by all.

Cody, no matter what I do, I can't get anything after Match 12 (except for one or two pieces) to show. Is this a problem with anyone else?
I think maybe it's a bandwidth issue? Because I can see like half of the entries at a time, then I refresh (which is taking forever), and I see a different set of entries... while some of my co-workers seem to load the pics just fine.... so I don't know what that means :)

Wow excellent turnout all around! Congrats to everyone who turned in a piece. More and more smiles (each time I refresh :p)

Cody - Thanks for putting this together. What a blast to participate and to see all the other entries. There is some fantastic work out there.

Too many highlights to pick them all out. Shelly W. and Jason C., especially loved 'em. Matt Dixon, way fun man. Xaya, don't know your work yet, but I really like you painting! Very nice. Zephyri... powerful painting! Steak-tron, love how you have used the lighting in yours. It is like some vaccum formed bas relief or something. Cool stuff man. Dave Palumbo, that is way fun. Made me laugh out loud, the guy's face is perfect. robogabo... dang Tucson brother, nice painting.

Tons of great work in here. I need to comment on many more. Too many nice paintings! I can't wait to see what you all do in the next round. Those in match 13 good luck and great work!

ArtByZak
January 22nd, 2008, 11:24 PM
Yes, a lot of great stuff. This is my first LMS, so I was wondering something:

To the judges, how do you weigh a person's technique vs. staying on topic? If one entry really screams "underneath it all" but is rendered in a simple style, and another is a visually stunning piece of artwork, but has nothing to do with the topic, who would win?

If this were a job assignment, I would think producing a work that stayed on topic would be of more use to an art director than something that was beautiful but off topic.

I would hate to have to judge this. There were too many pieces I just didn't understand. I'd stare at the piece, and try to figure how it fit the topic. How the essence of the image related to our assignment. Sometimes I'd get it, sometimes I'd just scroll down to the next image.

Regardless, I can see some people really spent a lot time on this, which is good.

I would like to see, if possible, the stand-in's names written in a different color or something, so I can know who came through to pick up the slack of a puss-out, and maybe that puss-out's name in parentheses behind it, so we can know who let us all down.

Man, it's amazing how some matches had FIVE completely solid artists!! It'd be one thing if there were three mediocres and one or two that stand out, but there were a few matches that, if I was one of those amazing artists (which turned out I wasn't) I'd be pretty heart-broken having such stiff competition.

First impressions...Great job, Everybody!

I'm thankful that round 20 held its own with two great entries from Hurricane and Arttorney, and that I didn't embarrass myself as much as usual, but wish we hadn't had two pussouts.

And Cody...if there is an award of some kind somewhere in the universe that is appropriate for the amazing amount of work you put into this event, I'll find the bastard and ship it to you. Sir, I bow before your greatness.

One thing I am impressed by is the range of approaches taken to solving this competition. People seem to be more open to experimenting a bit more than they usually do, and that;s a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

All of you who came through and submitted...I suggest you stand and take a bow. The applause you hear is for you.

Hey, Carnifex, I kept within the restrictions: less than 1000 pixels across and under 500kb. My image was only 500 pixels across, and 481k or so.

I wish I could have made it even bigger, because it lost soooooooo much detail when I shrunk it down. If I'm fortunate enough to move on to round 2, I'll probably do something a lot simpler. This piece took so long to finish.

Chingwa, I just saw your entry again and then realised that you made an adaptation from a Japanese fairy tale, am I right ? That's the crucial moment of the story. Excellent, that fits greatly to the topic. I got the tale in mind, but can't remember the title. Can you enlight me ? Thanks. ;)

Here are a few comments for the pieces that stood out for me in this thread. I'd have loved to be able to comment on all of them but alas, there are only so many hours in a day.

Icon - Love it! Subtle and clever!
Dougbot - Very cool. I like it a lot.
Patrick Ballesteros - A lot of people did the "tiny creature piloting a robot suit" concept, but I love all the cool little details you threw in there.
ArtByZak - Aw man, I thought mine was going to be the longest image, but you beat me by 27 pixels. Great stuff, man.
GreenTopaz - Wow! You just keep getting better. Great work!
Romance - Very nice work; creepy, sad and a little disturbing. I knew it was yours as soon as I saw it.
bluefooted - I'm just a huge fan of everything you do. This is no exception.
Sept13 - Aw, how sweet. Love it, but it's perhaps a little too nicolas-esque.
Ilaekae - Haha, I never know what to expect from you.
PatriciaS - Very funny!
Vorace - Great creature design there.
Helzon - Haven't seen your work in a while, you've improved a lot!
daveneale - Love those little guys.
alxcote - You really did a lot with a simple concept. Great work.
Yumiko - There are a surprising amount of mermaids in this round, but yours is one of the best!

Heya Alday... Nice catch man! It's based on "The Crane Wife" (tsuru no ongaeshi), and is indeed depicting the crucial moment in the story... It's really a rather touching story of two beings who loved each other very closely. However there are underpinnings of greed and other less noble human characteristics as well. The final painting comes across rather ominous, and loses the touching aspect to the tale which I regret a bit...

Thanks, Red :bashful:

Based on all the comments, I'd say there's some wonderful work here. But I can't get the first pages of any of the LMS threads to load. Stupid computer!

Wow! So many fantastic entries! Pure Eye-Candy!

There are too much really good entries to name them all.
One is really frightening me. It is the image with the spider from Tony Shasteen. I hate spiders and this image is like a nightmare getting real... CREEPY!

Best,

Chris

Thanks for the kind words, Carnifex. That piece took me forever. Nobody's really been commenting on it, so I don't know how it's being received. Naturally, like everyone here, I'm hoping to move on. Guess we'll see soon.
