O.k. I´ve got to confess that you´re new on the board - but just looking at your resume (not to mention your artwork) tells me that you´re far away from the usual Newbie-status you see here around ;).

You´ve got a good grasp of colour and values, I would like to see more of you here! Really good stuff

Very moody with a sharo/soft feel to it. Its use of the sharp/soft contrast as well as the light/dark contrast and the good colour scheme make it very good. Nice work.

Nice job.

At first I wasn't sure what the railing were, till I looked at them a bit. They almost seem a little too trasnparent, but I guess if they weren't they would probably draw too much attention.

The hearts seem a little out of place. Without them, your eye might get drawn towards the center piece more.

Nice style though. Did you do it Painter? If so what type of brushes?

Thanks for all the crit and support (very helpful). The next time you see this thread the image should be changed with improvements (minor ones). More crit will be taken into consideration on the next painting. Thanks again!
:chug:

In answer to neble's reply: The image was done in pencil first, then painted in Painter 6.0 using a combination of the following brushes...

Broad watercolor (good simple lay-in brush)
Simple watercolor (good for smaller local color lay-ins/shadow block-ins)
Grainy water (w/ paper textures enhanced)
Pencil (tighten things up/block things in)
Scratchboard (min size set to smallest, max set bigger [cool brushpen effect])
Large chalk (w/ paper textures)
Water Rake (imported from Painter 5.5 - nice "brush" look)
Splatter watercolor (good for random effects once in a while)

Hope that helps!

Very nice Kinman. The one thing that bugs me is the tangency of the railing where it overlaps the wall on the right–it crops the image a bit prematurely.

Cool website. Please post some of your figure drawings!

I really like the sense of atmosphere and grit that you put in your work. Your good at conveying complexity by useing simplicity, and that is something that I have a real hard time with.

Nice work,
Dustin

Just out of curiosity, at the california art institute, did you study under glen orbik, or was he gone by then? I know lipking did, and so did ryan wurmser. Was a mr. andrew burward-hoy there when you went? I'm always curious about good people who come out of that school. It has a deep and rich history, that almost no one knows about.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to study under Glen Orbik, but I have seen videos. Jeremy left soon after I took his class (I think he still runs workshops), and I hear Andrew Burward-hoy is actually still teaching there...

I'll have to go back one of these days..

On a different note, here's a new character..

Thats funny, i knew andrew went back awhile ago, but knowing him i don' think he would've stayed there that long. Its really cool to see how you interperit the reilly method. It has a really nice volumetric feel, which i imagine that houston workshop helped.

yo kinman!

how good to see you!

nice stuff you've been working on- lovely figures as usual- the old man has a lot of charm.

you might want to push the value grouping in the first environment a bit more... think foregrd, middlegrd & backgrd... maybe cloud the central tower in a very light smoke so it groups with the sky. that'll pop the graphic shape more.

I really like this Thunderdome-entry. Imo definitely one you can see in the group of the aspirants for the trophy. The whip is giving the whole figure a nice frame. What I´m not sure about is the frontleg - somehow the lower leg seems somehow to long to me, or maybe it seems so because of the construction of the boot.

Anyway a great piece!

Very impressive work Kinman. Ive seen you at the workshops at ACCD, and its really cool to see your concept stuff also. I really like your thunderdome entry, and your characters. The little boy with the afro has so much life to him that he looks like he's going to pop right out of the page any second now.

Wonderful!

One thing I would suggest would be to push your darks a little darker in some places, so you get more contrast in places where you want to draw the viewer. I see you did it in the helmet of your character, which draws out attention, but I would have made his back leg a tad darker, and maybe have added some gold hyroglyphics on his clothes/shirt. Y'know details, that tell us about his past.

What projects are you working on now?I ask cuz Ive heard about you at school, but I dont know anything about you.:)

Thanks again all!

Fipse: I agree with your lower leg comment.. It is a little long, but I am pleased with the placement of it (creates a nice imaginary curve from the sword to the back foot to the whip).... I'll have to keep your advice in mind for the next one.. Thanks!

I.was.ink (Oskar): Thanks for the darkening comment (that helped a lot in terms of the overall dark shape (so many things to think about when designing, hard to keep track)...
about the hieroglyphics.. I felt the drapery should remain simple in design (to contrast from the complexity in the helmet and limbs), but I did agree that he didn't really look like he had some sort of past experience... so I added some dust and scratches to him instead..

As far as projects that I'm working on.. what have you heard about me?

Well not much actually. While talking to people at Kevin's workshop, people always say " Have you seen kinman's life drawings?" I hadn't till two fridays ago at the workshop and when I did I was impressed! you are very very good, and I was just wondering who you're working for, are you doing freelance, or are you teaching?

I checked out your site, and you have some really nice pieces. I just wanted to know if you're currently working on something.:)

Kincept:

Your color work and textures are excellent. There's a real unique feel to your environments, which I like. I also appreciate the stylistic variations you're working through in terms of character development - they are all working nicely. I particularly like the kid in the overalls...he reminds me vaguely of Banja (www.banja.com).

My only criticism comes with your last image. The top half of that robot is awesome, but the bottom half is utterly immobile. It's very possible that I've missed the point of this concept, but it looks like a robot like that would need some serious mobility to put his massive claws and arms to use...but his lower half is a 6-ton stump.

Good work all around, though.

Great point leviathan..

I had to cut a few corners and negotiate a couple of deals.. but I finally got his legs installed... the guys at the shop told me they wouldn't break.. so that's a relief.. :)

i dont know much about websites but,
i would have someone that does, check your site out - it may be my set up however, the problem i saw was that some of your thumbnails wouldnt load. i had the same problem with an "extention" or plugin for dreamweaver. it enabled me to click on a thumbnail and show the larger image on the same page. i dont know how to code so this was a happy thing for me. only it wouldnt upload the image and after a little painful research i found out i needed another "extention" that would fix the problem. it invovled selecting it, and that being it. i am not a technical person, but it worked and all is well.
in your life study page, the two bottom rows didnt load! i had luckily clicked on one accidently and saw your amazing life painting studies.

another thing is when i clicked on a thumbnail, the window that popped up to display the full-sized image would crop your images. i feel it is because the window was set to the images size and the pop-up window has a board and header that crops the lower right corner of your pieces. (note: i am using internet explorer - which may be a problem in its own :p) just letting you know. your site's organization is awesome, i really like how you layed out your work. i also like the design and colors, very neat look.

great artwork to showcase, hardly a newb, psh! :p
