Hey guys.

First of all a little introduction:

I'm a 20 year old painting student living in Vienna, Austria. For a long time I have been focussing on getting a good grasp of different approaches to drawing and painting, I'm still learning and have a very long way to go.

Until recently I didn't have a visual language that I could call "mine". The style of some works I'm doing now (like this one) emerged very quickly and I am trying to find proper ways of presenting it. Logically a lot of experimenting is involved, since it is a challange to compose a more or less abstract image.

This piece is 200 x 200 cm big, oil on canvas.
I have been working on it for over one month, you can see the process in my sketchbook.

Thanks everyone for looking, I hope you like it!

EDIT:

I added a drawing of this kind, so you can see where this style came from. Thanks!

Unusual style, saa. Are the shapes inspired by letters?

thesaint: Thanks!

alesoun: No, actually not, but it's great to hear different impressions, so thanks for that! The way the style looks now basically is just a simplified version of a messy doodle.

2 stars?

Come on guys.

Even if you hate my work so much i would prefer you telling me directly WHAT it is that you dislike about it, and not simply give it a bad rating..

"You still have the chance to change my mind about conceptart.org, I don't want to end up thinking that most of you guys are only interested in highly polished fantasy stuff..."

Why do you have to phrase it like that? You've gotten responses about your work in this thread, and I don't really see how it's anyone's mission to change your mind about conceptart.org (except yourself, of course).

Perhaps (since you wanted criticism specific to your work), some criticism (that is, my criticism; in other words, i don't pretend to hold / or vocalize the opinion of the members of the collective) that might be directed at your piece might be along the lines of: it looks stencilled, and the pastry of colors don't really cohere to form an elegant interplay between the form and the overall composition of the picutre. Or, maybe people don't see a story behind the picture, and due to their interpretation that the picture is devoid of a storytelling component, they found it necessary to rate your picture lower than some others. Or, maybe (for whatever plethora of reasons) they didn't see the depth that you yourself envision your piece possess. Anyways, I don't see why you have to get bent out of shape that your piece was rated sub-norm to your expectations (not presuming that I know your expectations, but you seem as if this wasn't the rating you expected to receive).

And, no, I didn't rate your piece.

BlitzKev: Thanks for your reply, you have some good points.

I simply wanted to hear at least 1 crit while getting a 2 star rating (which obviously is quite low, you don't see it often around here) - I wanted to know what makes my painting THAT bad in the voter's eyes.

And you're right, I shouldn't have phrased it like that, it was a dumb generalisation. Also I shouldn't take those ratings to heart since anybody can do it anonymously.

Thank you for the critiques. The piece certainly is an instance of a long learning and experimenting process.

Thank you for your time, cheers!
