View Full Version : Johan's Sketchbook

Well, time for me too to have a try at a sketchbook, after many, many months of delay...

I have been drawing for all my life but it's really only the last one-and-a-half year or so that I've had any like-minded to talk art with and exchange ideas and critique. Since I've seen how much this has helped my development, I'm hoping getting some critique from here too will help even futher.

Anyways, I'll start it off with some recent scans and sketches.

Be harsh! :)

Edit: Swapped pics for a thread thumbnail...

Helloes!

I really like your creature design and your rendering skills with a simple pen are just amazing.
To be critical then, well let's see.. One thing that comes to mind is the human face, perhaps study the proportions of nose, eyes and so on, aswell as the placement in the face. More anatomy studies never hurt either, but I really like the way to work with trolls and monsters. It might not work as well on the female human body.

I'm really curious and eager to see more! :D

You know that I did your characters man, very nice design and general feel to them.
I think your anatomy could use some work and maybe some facial studies.

Your style feels very fairy tail;ish and I love that. You should post some more of your recent stuff^^

Keep pushing it mate.

Cheers

cool paintings/drawings and I agree on anatomy maybe could be better . I am on the case myself, just started printing out the whole bridgman's complete guide to drawing from life. Nice start !

I really like the contrast in the dragonlike creature.

(jag är också svensk :) )

wholecar: Thank you for stopping by and commenting!

lilnebo: Thank you for the compliments!

hurricane: Thank you!! You're such a huge source of inspiration to me so you commenting really makes me happy! :^^:

ninjacat11: Thank you!

softocean: Thank you, though I feel I need to start paying more attention to the basics beneath the details and the finish.

enmi: Thank you for the crit and compliments! I think you pretty much hit bull's eye with your comment. Always found human anatomy and faces hardest to draw, and pencil renders of random monsters easiest, which means I usually find myself drawing the later ones out of pure sloth... So please keep poking me to draw the difficult stuff and not the easy.

Buckster: Thanks for the comment mate! I totally agree about the critique. You'd think after all those figure drawing courses something should have stuck, but meh. :P

Tough I'm not so sure about my character design, I feel it's usually much to thoughtless. Gonna try to do like you and lay off the rendering for a while and focus on the design instead.

johanflod: Thank you for commenting! Got a lot of material on anatomy too, just laying around waiting to be read. Just need to get that thumb of of my arse... ;)

Here are some speeds, doodles and some concepts for a school project.

the design is really cool and the silhouettes reads very well.
the cute houses are very well rendered, awesome

My crit from the last post still stands, keep working on the anatomy and such.

Salacuis: Hehe, thanks!

Dan Valkar: Thank you for commenting!

Buckster: Thanks! I put some thought in the silhouette for the soldier (not overly much since it was pretty rushed, but some at least) so it's cool to hear it shows. And yes, must practice anatomy much more, gotta stop being so lazy when it comes to studies...

kaktuzlime: Tack! Du skulle inte kunna scanna den där sidan om de sju sätten tyg viker sig på som du har i din skissbok åt mig? :)

hey man, nice to see that you are updating again ^^
I love how your mind works, doodling away at different designs all the time. Killer stuff.

But damn man, you've got to check the volume of the heads ^^

Cheers man and keep kicking it.

All the best

G'day Johan
Loving your designs dude, there are some really funny ones in there.
The bear-human pics are great. Some good characters in your latest batch.
Keep it up!

Camara: Thank you for stopping by, I'm happy you liked it!

Buckster: Thanks man! I don't know why I have such problems with heads, they always turn out flattened and deformed. More practice is of course the only way, but it's annoying when they refuse to turn out the way I want, hehehe.

Enemy_Within: Thank you!

Aaand am bunch of sketches. Meh, need to be more frequent with those updates... Instead of one big dump every other month or so.

hey man, I am so happy that you've decided to update again! feel the joy.

As usual I enjoy your designs, I think that you have such vivid imagination concerning that and the trolls! Wow, I love 'em and such a unique fairy tale style to them, lovin' the graphic noses.

as far as critique goes I think you should get your proportions under control. Start off very loose and before rendering anything, make sure that everything is within reasonable bounds ^^

Keep sharing mate

Cheers

destinyapocalypse: Thanks!

Buckster: Thanks! Especially for the crit, of course. I do start out very rough and loose actually, but usually perhaps too loosely and "på en höft", because my characters always turn out lopsided in one way or another.

Been terribly lazy lately :(, but here's some new stuff at least:

For Some Reason Im Lovin It... Could You Give Me Any Tips Were Did U Learn

vaettir
October 7th, 2008, 07:30 PM
Tallnskrony: Thanks! Glad you like it! :) I've learned the basics by myself by just drawing every now and then, but more importantly I've learned lots in the last few years from crit and tips from other artists, and from talking with others about art. So the best tip I can give you is to find others likeminded, get together with them and draw!

Some faces practice. Still struggling with them... keep displacing the "far" eyes something horrible.

hey i like all the cartoony drawings. also, the imaginative creatures you have created are quite interesting. you are very creative. just keep the form well and see where that goes. keep it up and keep them coming :rocker:

Great wrestling sketches, that's pretty convincing interaction. I also like the big-nosed faces on the first page. You seem to have lots of creativity in designing faces with different personalities. I'd like to see some colour studies from life or ref. :)

Keep it up!

l0stinth0ughts:
Many thanks for your comment! Usually I draw non-human creatures because I suck at human anatomy, but maybe it helps creativity also. Will take your advice and try to think more about form. :)

smuli:
Thanks man! I'll make sure to toss in a few colour studies, been meaning to do so for ages but it's always easier to get started when someone comes along and pokes you. :D
